Tile 101: Glass Tile

Thursday, September 30th, 2010

When you’re considering tile, keep in mind that there are a number of options, each with advantages and disadvantages. It’s important to understand the differences to ensure that you pick the best option for your needs.

Glass tile is a beautiful choice for walls and kitchen backsplashes. The jewel-tone colors and glossy appearance can change a kitchen from dull to dramatic. Glass tile works well in multi-color mosaic patterns, and also complements metallic tile accents. It gives a room a contemporary flavor as well as a touch of “bling” without being too gaudy.

Most glass tile works well for walls but not floors. The tile is not as durable, and would scratch and break under normal floor use. Because it is transparent, standard installation ruins the look of glass tile. Be sure your installer is familiar with the installation requirements of glass, and don’t try to install it yourself. Cutting glass tile is difficult and requires a professional.

Recycled glass tile provides a sustainable option without compromising style. Although glass can be expensive, carefully choosing a key location and the right tiles allows you to create excitement within a limited space. Be a little daring and pull glass tile into your home’s décor plans.

Design Your Outdoor Space

Thursday, September 23rd, 2010

As autumn takes over for summer, these days of perfect weather give us one last chance for outdoor entertaining. If you have one of those beautiful outdoor kitchen and patio spaces, having people over is just a matter of picking up the food. But even if your space is limited along with your budget, you can create a lovely outdoor spot for company, or just for your family.

Here are a few ideas.

  • Think about your space. Before you go shopping, take a look at your patio or yard. Would a picnic table be a good family choice? If your patio and household are small, maybe just a table to seat four would make more sense. For balconies, the bistro tables designed for two are a nice option. Would you like a small seating area beyond your table? Make a plan and do some measuring before you shop.
  • Take advantage of end-of-season sales. As the weather turns colder, patio furniture drops in price dramatically. Now is the time to pick up some outdoor items to enjoy this fall and next year.
  • Don’t limit your options to standard patio furniture. The outdoor table in this photo is simply an old wooden set painted a bright color. While this option may mean that you bring it into a shed or cover it when not in use to help it last, it’s an appealing and inexpensive alternative.
  • Have fun with color. As you can see from the photo, vivid colors such as this blue combined with the yellow of the lemons creates an inviting dinner spot from an old painted table and some linens. Are there some bright colors you’d like to have in your life that don’t fit in your home? Maybe you can have them in your backyard.
  • Include nature. The lemon branches and the fruit on the table remind you that you are outside. You can do the same with apples or pears in a more temperate climate. Celebrate the outdoors with plants, fruits and flowers.

Creating an outdoor space is a great way to expand your living area and add to your entertaining options. From a large gathering under the trees to a simple breakfast on your patio, take full advantage of the outdoors.

Wood Floor Styles: Formal

Wednesday, September 8th, 2010

What makes this room work so well? Picture the same space with a light floor, and it’s clear that the dark wood creates just the right tone of warmth and contrast to anchor the room.

Dark wood floors such as this example of Brazilian Cherry provide a strong base for a more formal decorated space. A floor like this has an almost historical feel, as if the home is a century old. Architectural details such as the high baseboard and the wall moldings and inset spaces create a sense of traditional style. However at the same time the furnishings and colors have a more contemporary approach. This combination is now called transitional style.

Transitional rooms feature the best of the past with the clean lines and colors of today. The slipper chair to the left and the round table on the right would be equally at home in a modern house or one from the 1920’s. The sink and faucets, however, are completely contemporary.

If you are drawn to this balance of modern and traditional and would like to decorate your home in a transitional style, consider starting with a floor like this one – dark and rich and ready to give you a good foundation to support your dream look.

Bamboo Flooring

Saturday, September 4th, 2010
Bamboo flooring is all the rage these days not only for its aesthetic value, but also the environmentally friendly factor it lends to the homes where it is used. To give you a brief idea as to where its eco-friendliness stems from, bamboo is actaully a rapidly growing grass which can reach maturity within a time span of three to seven years. This is tremendously fast – especially when you compare it with other trees which are normally used for wood flooring like oak, which can take up to 120 years to grow to its full height.

Although bamboo is sometimes thought of as exotic, that doesn’t mean it has to be expensive!  This makes for a rare combination of eco-friendly and affordable. If you plan to install on your own, before beginning installation, leave the bamboo in the room you wish to use it, for a few days. This process is called acclimation and it allows the bamboo acclimate to the temperature and moisture content of the room preventing any unnecessary expansion and contraction.

If you think bamboo flooring may look too monotone for a whole room, you’d be surprised at the diversity bamboo flooring is now offered in. Bamboo flooring can suit any style of decoration that you are planning to use in your house.

Installation and maintenance of bamboo flooring is very simple. Bamboo flooring can be easily swept every day and does not require special maintenance efforts on your part… except where water is concerned. Keep water contact with the floor at a bare minimum. If some amount of water is spilled, wipe it up immediately. Other than that, sit back and relax and enjoy your environmentally friendly floor!
