If you have a laundry room on the second floor or main floor of your home, you probably already have finished flooring in the room. Basement laundry rooms tend to have cement floors. Adding laminate or tile to a basement laundry room floor would make the space feel more like a finished room.

Painting the walls of the laundry room a happy color you love could improve your mood when you are in the room.  This is especially true for basement laundry rooms. Cabinets can be painted or replaced with more stylish cabinet doors.  Open shelves can be put up to store laundry supplies in pretty glass jars.  A folding drawer or cabinet makes drying sweaters neater and keeps the room less cluttered.

Adding a chandelier or other fun hanging light can give an extra bit of style to the utilitarian room. If your laundry room has a window, put up decorative window treatments like cafe curtains or roman shades.

Thermador Executive Chef Brad Petersen will be starring in a new TV show focusing on the use of grains in cooking, which, numerous studies have shown, creates a more nutritious diet and leads to an overall healthier lifestyle. Set to premier May 12 on Brigham Young University’s television network (BYUtv), “Fusion Grain Cooking with Chef Brad” is currently being filmed at Thermador’s Gallery & Training Center in Scottsdale, Ariz.

“Our goal is to get people away from eating processed foods without compromising taste,” said Petersen, who’s worked with Thermador in various culinary capacities for nearly six years. “The focus is to educate people on the practice of cooking with grains, fusing grains with everyday food people eat, and creating meals that are rich in complex carbohydrates and high in fiber, which is a great combination and a key to healthy cooking.”

“Filming in Thermador’s test kitchens and using its professional-grade appliances will only add to the show’s cooking prowess,” added Peterson.

The half-hour show, which will reach BYUtv’s more than 57 million households, is based on the principle that “food doesn’t have to lack taste to be healthy,” emphasizing the notion that many of the foods people eat can be significantly enhanced — both in taste and nutrition — with a knowledgeable use of grains. The show’s pilot episode was filmed in December with Petersen, who also lectures at BYU during the summer.

All episodes are being filmed in the Thermador Professional Theater kitchen of the brand’s training center in Scottsdale, where Petersen is based and regularly creates recipes for Thermador and hosts the brand’s culinary events. The kitchen set houses all of Thermador’s newest appliances, including the new Steam & Convection Oven, unveiled late last year as the luxury-appliance industry’s first oven to combine steam cooking with convection.

ECO-FRIENDLY CHANGE IN DETERGENTS

* As of July 1, 2010, 17 states passed laws PHOSPHATE-FREE (P-FREE) DETERGENTS
limiting the amount of phosphorous (phosphates) in household dishwasher detergents to no more than 0.5 percent. (Previous detergents contained up to 8.7 percent.)
Major manufacturers have reformulated their dishwasher detergents for the entire United States.
• Phosphates are difficult to remove in waste water at sewage treatment plants. They’re then discharged into rivers, lakes, streams and drinking water reservoirs where they cause environmental harm.
WHY THE BAN
• In freshwater, phosphates boost algae growth, which consume all the oxygen, ultimately killing the fish and plants
• They’re chemical additives in detergents that act as a cleaning agent helping to remove stains, break down grease and prevent spotting

WHAT ARE PHOSPHATES
• During washing, phosphates suspend food particles so they don’t stick to dishes. Plus, they soften water allowing suds to form for cleaning

Did You Know: Phosphates have been limited in laundry detergents since 1994. The change in dishwasher detergents is another step in the eco-conscious awareness found in today’s products and the eco-friendly choices consumers are making.
• Detergents without phosphates may leave a white film or residue on dishes, glassware, plastic items, utensils, even the dishwasher tub.
MAY CAUSE WHITE FILM ON DISHES
• When customers see this white film this can lead them to doubt or blame their dishwasher’s cleaning performance
Note: If a customer notices a white film, it can be assumed that the phosphate-free detergent is the problem. This film is a mineral buildup and not etching as a result of too much detergent.

WAYS TO HELP REDUCE WHITE FILM BUILDUP

• Tablets and Pacs perform better than powder, liquid or gel detergents**
• To minimize a repeat buildup of the white film, use a rinse aid.
• This issue is more frequent in homes with hard water.
• Dishwashers with built-in water softener systems are available in the market to soften the water and help reduce the white film.

Nationally acclaimed designers Mick De Giulio, Jamie Drake, and Matthew Quinn teamed up with Sub-Zero and Wolf to author a report, which was released during a presentation at the Sub-Zero and Wolf Manhattan showroom last week.

“Throughout the years, we have seen kitchens evolve through our biennial Kitchen Design Contest, which honors the design trade’s greatest work,” said Paul Leuthe, Corporate Marketing Manager for Sub-Zero and Wolf. “Each contest, we review thousands of kitchens.

Consequently, we have a wealth of knowledge on evolving designs and trends, and we are able to draw on these resources to forecast for the future. Jamie, Matthew, and Mick have all been a significant part of the Sub-Zero and Wolf Kitchen Design Contest over the years, and we have key insight from their own professional experiences that we could share.”

Drawing on historical context, current design trends, and future projections, the designers outlined the following key trends:

• Integration of lifestyle into the kitchen
• “Green” has evolved into a “health and wellness” focus
• Personal experience as a driver of design
• Honest use of noble materials
• Technological innovation is front and center

Since founding de Giulio kitchen design in Chicago in 1984, Mick De Giulio has been creating extraordinary kitchens for distinctive residences throughout the United States and abroad. In 2005, he was recognized by Kitchen & Bath Business as one of the 50 most influential people in the kitchen and bath industry over the last 50 years.

“There has been a dramatic shift – a fundamental cultural shift – in the last decade,” said De Giulio. “Families are gravitating toward this notion of “kitchen centricity” – the energy of the home is truly centered in the kitchen.”

New York-based interior designer Jamie Drake launched his design firm, Drake Design Associates, in 1978. Since then, he has been awarded numerous accolades from ASID’s Platinum Award to his induction into the Interior Design Hall of Fame. He has completed a vast array of projects for an impressive roster of clients, from Madonna to New York’s Mayor Bloomberg.

“We are now seeing clients infuse meaningful personal experiences in kitchen design,” said Drake. “The application of global and custom elements is wonderfully exciting, particularly in a room of the house that was once so utilitarian.”

Matthew Quinn, principal of the Atlanta-based Design Galleria Kitchen & Bath Studio, is a leading expert in kitchen design. He recently founded the Matthew Quinn Collection, a new showroom concept in luxury kitchen, bath, and architectural hardware. His timeless work and principle of design, “form follows function,” have earned myriad design awards.

“New technologies are the game-changers in kitchen design,” said Quinn. “We are now able to seamlessly blend the kitchen with the rest of the house in a way that responds to our changing lifestyle.”
