New SMEG Appliances at Arizona Wholesale

What's New at Arizona Wholesale Supply?

SMEG Appliances from Italy

A few years ago Fiat automobiles were relaunched in the U.S. with some very clever TV commercials announcing “The Italians are coming.” Well, they sure are, but their invasion has not been limited to automobiles. Italian appliances have also made their mark in the U.S. over the past few years. Among the latest, is the Italian brand SMEG. It's now available in Arizona at Arizona Wholesale Supply.

I had an advance notice about SMEG. While vacationing in England a few years ago, we were wandering the streets of Bath, and passed an appliance store. In deference to my wife, I resisted the urge to go inside, but I did check out the SMEG refrigerator in the window display. Now, this upscale Italian brand is available in the U.S. As you can see the refrigerator has a distinct retro 50's look, and is available in an array of colors including the pastel blue below. It's a sturdy product, and a particular nice fit in smaller kitchens. Below are some of the listed features:

Appliance Colors over a lifetime

Are Old Appliance Colors becoming New Again?

New Appliances in Pink and Turquoise Rivaled by Black Stainless Steel

Turquoise Appliances

Northstar Appliances

Modern major appliances are dated as beginning in the Post WWII era. White appliances were standard, but during the 50's and on into the 60's our kitchens were brightened up with Pink and Turquoise appliances. Recently, some specialty brands such as Northstar and Smeg have re-introduced these colors to add the brightness back into our kitchens along with a retro look (Northstar Appliances above in a K. Hovnanian Model home – Phoenix Area 2015).

Later in the 60's, Harvest Gold, Avocado, and Coppertone became the popular appliance colors. A unique characteristic of these colors was a darker shading around the edges of the appliance. Many years later in an effort to refresh these colors the shading was removed. For example, Harvest Gold became Harvest Wheat and the color had a lighter, cooler look. Almond was added to the mix and the beige finish quickly became a hit.

Colors aren't always successful, however. Back in the mid 80's both GE and Whirlpool came out with a couple of new colors – Silver and Sand color (gray and a little darker beige than Almond) from GE and similar Platinum and Toast shades from Whirlpool. Unfortunately, the shades from each manufacturer were similar, but did not match. Consumers chose to stick with their White and Almond appliances. Toast and Sand and Silver and Platinum were quickly dropped.

It's worth noting that during the run up of Harvest Gold and Avocado, a trend toward larger windows on ranges and ovens eventually led to the painted fronts and small windows on many appliances becoming black glass finishes across the front with chrome trim on the edges.

Black-Stainless-Steel

In the late '80s, Fred Carl introduced the Viking Range, a range with a commercial look that was designed for the home. By the mid-90's, the trend toward Pro-Style ranges and ovens in luxury homes was well on its way. Today, stainless steel appliances are offered (at a premium) even in starter homes.

Now, KitchenAid has introduced Black Stainless Steel. It's hard to see in the photo, but the appliances have the texture and grain of stainless steel, and the color is black. If you want to see it in person, plan a visit to one of the Arizona Wholesale Supply locations below.

Solving appliance ducting concerns, makeup air, and island installations

Unique Appliance Problems Solved with Jenn-Air Downdraft

Contractor and Designer Creative Problem Solving with Jenn-Air

Sometimes you run across design and construction issues with appliances that just seem to defy solution. You think and think, and ask all your sources for suggestions and nothing seems to be a good solution. Here are two issues that seem to come up when it comes to locating and installing ranges and cooktops.

Island Installations of Cooking Appliances

Locating a range or cooktop on an island is perfect for an entertaining kitchen. Yet it seems quite rare (especially in Arizona) to find ranges or cooktops on an island. Advanced planning to get the 220v. electric or a gas line to the island is important. Doing floor cuts after the fact may be expensive, and impractical, and suspending an overhead hood from the ceiling can also be problematic.

However, one way to simplify these issues is to install a Jenn-Air downdraft range or cooktop. The proximity center ventilation eliminates the need for an overhead hood and clears the sight lines as well. In addition, Jenn-Air now offers a duct-free kit with a replaceable filter that eliminates the need for any external ducting. It's perfect for an island installation.

Makeup Air Issues Disappear

Recent changes in building codes require makeup air to replace the air removed from a home by powerful overhead hoods. Fortunately, because downdraft center proximity ventilation is close to the source of the vent air, high CFM motors are not required. The new Jenn-Air downdraft range vents at only 283 CFM. And, with a duct-free kit there is no air exhausted from the home so no concern with makeup air whatsoever.

Considering a new build or a remodel? Look into Jenn-Air downdraft to make ventilation challenges go away!

More Highlights from PCBC 2015

New from the Pacific Coast Builder Conference

PCBC-2015

PCBC 2015

For 50 plus years the West's leading builders have gathered at the PCBC for an informative and educational confab. Here is just one interesting product that we noticed at this year's confererence. Arizona builders and designers can contact Arizona Wholesale Supply Co. for more information on this and more products from the 2015 PCBC. We'll continue to highlight products from the PCBC on this blog, so continue to check back often.

WHIRLPOOL HEAT PUMP DRYER

Did you know that Energy Star appliances have been around for a couple of decades, yet until recently, there has never been an Energy Star category for dryers. It's a big surprise to many people, because dryers are one of the big energy users in household appliances. A major reason for no Energy Star rating for dryers is the lack of differentiation in energy usage on most full-sized dryers.

However, it's a new day for dryers. Condensate dryers from Europe have become popular, AND there are now new “heat pump” dryers available that use a system similar to heat pump air conditioners that saves up to 50% of the energy used in traditional dryers; about $150 a year on average.

In addition, and this is a BIG DEAL, these new dryers are ventless. You can locate the laundry nearly anywhere. No need to run a vent through the walls, and no risk of fire. Clogged dryer vents are considered the number one cause of house fires.

Whirlpool received a Parade of Products award from the PCBC for its Whirlpool® HybridCare™ Heat Pump Dryer. Of course, you can learn more about this product from your Arizona Wholesale Supply account manager.

Shaw Floors at PCBC2015

FLOORTÉ™: Luxury Vinyl Flooring Collection from Shaw

At Shaw, luxury vinyl flooring—which we often call resilient—is our forte. So we’re calling our latest collection Floorte™.

Floorte™ is a vinyl laminate made using high-definition printing to emulate a hardwood or tile surface. Shaw's engineered FOLD N GO™ locking system makes installation easy. Floorté™ floors are not only strong and durable, but their flexible design helps conceal imperfections in the floor beneath. The high-definition printing creates a highly authentic appearance, and the hardwood designs are created to match the top species and colors of hardwood.

“You can get the wood look without the high-maintenance, a product that hides imperfections in subfloors, and an easy click system,” says Natalie Cady, director of hard surface marketing. “The fact that it’s waterproof is just icing on the cake.”

Laminate Coreboard Technology

An Eco-Friendly Alternative

Known for being committed to the environment, Shaw Floors laminate options are an ideal choice for all of us who are environmentally conscious. Shaw laminates have a long life span. Replacement is something you won't even think about for many years to come.

Why Choose Laminate?

Since laminate is made to look like and even feel like hardwood, maybe you're wondering why you shouldn't just buy hardwood? Shaw floors has a great selection of hardwood floors. But, here are some reasons you may want laminate:

  1. As always, price may be a consideration. Laminate can be half the price of hardwoods. And the easier, quicker installation, can save you money, also.

  2. Even though hardwood is a “natural” product, laminate is much more durable than hardwood. It's not nearly as likely to scratch or split. It's much more resist moisture damage, and maintenance is a breeze. There's less wear and tear, and it's very resistant to spills and stains.

  3. Laminate is also versatile. Various wood grains, colors, tints and patterns are limited only by consumer demand.

New Rules on GFCI Receptacles

Heads Up: Builders and Contractors

GFCI rules changing again on June 29th, 2015

UL 943 Changes

The new rule requires that GFCI receptacles manufactured on or after June 29, 2015 must have:

  1. An auto-monitoring function that will allow for periodic automatic testing (self-test) of the GFCI device and its ability to respond to a ground fault. If a problem is detected the GFCI will disconnect power to anything connected to it or indicate that there is a problem using visual or audible means.
  2. Provisions to ensure that any receptacle type GFCI that contains separate line and load terminals, and that is powered through its load terminals, shall not reset and supply power to its receptacle face or line terminals if miswired. This applies both during its initial installation and after reinstallation following a correctly wired installation. If the device is provided with special instructions for removal and reinstallation, the instructions shall be followed during testing.

Provision 1 is self-explanatory. From June 29th, 2015 forward, manufacturers of GFCI receptacles, will need to build receptacles that meet the new UL criteria. That is, the receptacle itself must have the ability to verify that it will disconnect power in the event of a ground fault, and provide a warning either visibly or audibly.

Provision 2 seems a bit more confusing, but essentially it requires that if the GFCI receptacle is mis-wired, it cannot simply be reset. The receptacle must be removed, and replaced or removed and re-installed following the procedure specified by the GFCI manufacturer. In the past, some GFCI receptacles could simply be reset without necessarily correcting the cause of the malfunction.

The good news in all this is that the regulation effective date applies to the manufacturer. Existing inventory manufactured before June 29, 2015 may still be used, but GFCI receptacles manufactured on or after June 29, 2015 must comply to the new provisions of the regulation.

So, builders and contractors need to be aware of this new regulation and understand that over the coming months they'll begin to see the new GFCI receptacles show up in the supply chain.

Energy Star Homes

Why Buy an Energy Star Home?

If you're in the market for a new home, there are a host of choices you'll need to make. Yup, it's way more than just location, location, location. One think you might want to consider is purchasing an Energy Star certified home.

What is an Energy Star Certified Home?

According to the folks at the EPA an ENERGY STAR certified new home will deliver:

“energy efficiency savings of up to 30 percent when compared to typical new homes”.

In order for a new home to earn the ENERGY STAR label it must undergo a process of inspections, testing, and verification in order to meet strict EPA requirements.

Benefits of Energy Star Home

Here are the benefits of an Energy Star Certified Home according to the Energy Star experts:

Better durability
More comfortable
Lower utility and maintenance costs

  • Homes earning the ENERGY STAR label use 20-30 percent less energy than typical new homes, and even more when compared to most resale homes on the market today.
  • Together, families who purchased homes earning the ENERGY STAR label save more than $350 million each year on their utility bills.
  • Should the time come to consider selling, the ENERGY STAR label will set the home apart as something better: a home of genuine quality, comfort, and efficiency.

Trends in Professional Style Appliances

Pro-Style Ranges in Standard Kitchens

Professional style ranges have been showing up in standard kitchens for several years now. Certainly, we’ve seen brands such as GE Café give a “pro” look to standard appliances with great success. But more than that, consumers are willing to jump ship when it comes to their standard range, opting for one of the high-end professional style brands for the added cooking power as well as the pro-look. Buyers seem to be not at all concerned with having matching appliances either by brand or style, and they don’t hesitate sticking a bulky pro-style range in with any overall kitchen style. In addition, they’re often unconcerned that the pro-style range will cost more than all of the rest of their standard appliances combined.

Builders, contractors, designers, and remodelers can be challenged with a non-standard depth, special ventilation needs, and other custom changes that might be required. Nevertheless, these pro-style non-standard ranges are in enough demand that the industry is adapting to buyers requests.

The good news is that trade professionals, can rely on Arizona Wholesale Supply to guide them through the maze of pro-range choices. Here are two examples of luxury brands that specialize in ranges with a professional look and features.

Thermador-Range

Thermador’s new Pro Harmony 30″ range above is touted as the only 5-burner 30″ Pro-Style range in the luxury category. This range is likely to cost $4000 – $5000 when it debuts later this year.

Italian manufacturer Bertazzoni below is making a mark with their 30″ Pro-Style range that retails for as low as $2599. That’s a very competitive price for a range in this category. Bertazzoni is also known for offering their ranges in a choice of brilliant colors in addition to the common stainless steel finish.

Bertazzoni-Range

Designers, builders, contractors, and remodelers wishing to explore opportunities in the pro-style range category are welcome to consult with the professionals at Arizona Wholesale Supply for more detailed information.
