The grass cloth covered walls have loads of texture. This texture contrasts against the high gloss polished surfaces of the sleek white furniture. The mirror’s reflective surface is another bit of sparkle against the flat texture of the wall. High gloss paint trim and a dark, polished floor add further shine to surfaces.

Pale blue glass lamps complement the contrasting gold of the curtains, chandelier and mirror frame. The cool blue gives a nice contrast to the warm tones of the browns and golds in the room. A single red object on the buffet completes the triadic color scheme of blue, yellow and red.

Rather than rely on pattern and tons of color, this modern dining room uses contrast to create an inviting, sophisticated space. There is a subtle pattern of brown and white on the chair seats and with the chair backs, but otherwise solid swaths of color dominate the space.

1. What purpose does the room have now and what purpose do you anticipate in the future? Today’s den may be tomorrow’s nursery or once a child leaves home their room may become a guest room. Good flooring will last a long time. Think about current and future plans for the room.
2. What expectations do you have for the new flooring? Is low maintenance or style the most important goal? Write a list of your expectations in terms of performance. Your salesperson can help you narrow your search based on that information.
3. Will that room stay in its current style or evolve in a new direction? Has your taste changed over the years? Make sure that you choose flooring that will allow you to make other changes in the future.
4. Are there any color requirements or preferences for the room? Be sure to choose flooring to work with future color plans.

Although you may currently have no plans to sell your home, it’s a good idea to consider resale when renovating your home. Would wood floors be a good investment for you? Consider the following factors.

Neighborhood: If you live in an upscale neighborhood with homes that feature higher-end finishes, choosing wood will make your home more competitive in the market. In an area of starter homes, how about wood in the living/dining area only, or choosing a less expensive wood such as oak? Laminate floors with a look similar to wood at a much lower price are another option to consider.

Home style: A traditional style is well suited to wood. Modern homes have more flooring flexibility, but will also stand out with wood.

Personal preference: You have to choose flooring based on your personal preference first. Many people love wood, but if you don’t, select the flooring that suits you best. However, if you are attracted to wood floors, you can be sure that your choice will make selling your home easier when the time comes.

Dark wood floors such as this example of Brazilian Cherry provide a strong base for a more formal decorated space. A floor like this has an almost historical feel, as if the home is a century old. Architectural details such as the high baseboard and the wall moldings and inset spaces create a sense of traditional style. However at the same time the furnishings and colors have a more contemporary approach. This combination is now called transitional style.

A few things to keep in mind before we talk specifics about cleaning:

• Always have walk off mats at every entrance to your home. These are important because they can aide in trapping dirt from shoes before it can enter your home and scratch the floors.
• Check your furniture feet to ensure they have feet protectors on the bottom. These will prevent the chair bottoms from scratching and denting your floors when people slide their chairs out to stand up.
• Remove any spills as quickly as possible. The longer a spill sits, the more risk you run of damage or permanent staining.

Ok, now let’s talk specifics!

First are foremost, you should always try to use a manufacture approved floor cleaner. (and follow the directions) Why, you ask?

• Manufacturers have spent countless hours designing cleaners that are most effective for their product. They know how it was made and what ingredients are most effective in caring for their product.
• Side note: You want to follow the directions because we are Americans….. meaning that we generally think that more is better. Many floor cleaners only require minimal amounts of product to achieve optimal results. Too much of a good thing can actually cause more harm than good.
• Some warranties can be voided if the proper cleaner is not used.  It would be a shame to ruin your floors over a bottle of the wrong cleaner. It happens, believe us!
• Using multiple cleaners on the same product (particularly hard surfaces) can leave a film that can permanently damage the floors.
