Contrasts add interest to a room. This dining room uses contrast to create some unexpected design twists. Dark walls and light furniture flip the more common formula of dark furnishings against white or cream walls. Flat and reflective surfaces mix things up to create contrast between textures.

The dark walls make the room feel dramatic and intimate. Dark floors continue the dramatic, cozy feel. These dark colors are the perfect offset for the crisp white furniture. The glossy white buffet, table and chairs are the focus against the darker backdrop of browns.

The grass cloth covered walls have loads of texture. This texture contrasts against the high gloss polished surfaces of the sleek white furniture. The mirror’s reflective surface is another bit of sparkle against the flat texture of the wall. High gloss paint trim and a dark, polished floor add further shine to surfaces.

Pale blue glass lamps complement the contrasting gold of the curtains, chandelier and mirror frame. The cool blue gives a nice contrast to the warm tones of the browns and golds in the room. A single red object on the buffet completes the triadic color scheme of blue, yellow and red.

Rather than rely on pattern and tons of color, this modern dining room uses contrast to create an inviting, sophisticated space. There is a subtle pattern of brown and white on the chair seats and with the chair backs, but otherwise solid swaths of color dominate the space.

If your home doesn’t have a natural focal point, consider adding something to draw attention to a key area in your home. A medallion such as this one can be just the eye-catching element needed to make a space unique.

Medallions such as this one are available in stone and wood. This medallion showcases several tones of gold and a light neutral ivory marble. The clean lines and sparkling surface work well contrasted with the large blocks of limestone that make up the rest of the flooring.

Pre-cut medallions come in a broad variety of materials and styles. The first step in deciding whether a medallion would work for you is a visit to our showroom to see the selection. In addition to stone, a wood medallion is a striking addition to a home. Using a number of tones of wood, these also create a dramatic focal point on your floor.

Walk through your home to see if you have a good location for installing a medallion. They add a spark to an entryway – creating a mood from the time people walk into your home. Add one to the center of a great room and the entire space seems to radiate out from it. If your home has a central location with a number of rooms radiating out, that spot might benefit from a medallion.

Whether your home’s style is traditional or modern, there’s a medallion that will work for you. When you’re ready to replace your flooring, think about adding something special with a medallion in your home.

Choosing our favorites was difficult with thousands of products to choose from. Here are some of our top picks for each of the collections.

Carpet

Whether you are looking for a smooth Saxony, an intricate pattern or a trendy shag, Mohawk offers thousands of carpet options in thousands of colors, styles and textures. One of our favorite products from Mohawk is the EverStrand carpeting, woven from fibers made from plastic beverage bottles. This soft yarn is died into hundreds of colors and into amazing patterns.

Hardwood

Mohawk’s hardwood floors are as durable as they are beautiful. Three surface finishes, including CrystalShield™, the exclusive Aluminum Oxide Ceramica or Natural Oil finish, mean there is a finish to suit your style and needs. Our favorite is the Strand Woven Bamboo in either Halea or Kahala styles.

Ceramic Tile

Mohawk offers four tile collections: Classic, Rustic, Slate and Artistic Statements. We like the innovative and contemporary feeling metal tile in the artistic collection.

Laminate

From rich woods, including oaks, hickories, walnuts, and more exotic teaks and rosewoods, Mohawk’s laminate collection spans the spectrum of wood floor replicas. Not to be outdone, the stone and ceramic laminate collection has tiles with beveled edges that have the look of stone. We love the mix and match layout of the stone laminate tiles.

Area Rug

From Traditional to Contemporary designs, Mohawk’s designers have created rugs that will suit any style room. We love the tan and white mixed herringbone patterned rug with it’s subtle pattern and neutral colors.

To find your favorite Mohawk flooring, visit Arizona Wholesale Supply’s website.

What purpose does the room have now and what purpose do you anticipate in the future? Today’s den may be tomorrow’s nursery or once a child leaves home their room may become a guest room. Good flooring will last a long time. Think about current and future plans for the room.

What expectations do you have for the new flooring? Is low maintenance or style the most important goal? Write a list of your expectations in terms of performance. Your salesperson can help you narrow your search based on that information.

Will that room stay in its current style or evolve in a new direction? Has your taste changed over the years? Make sure that you choose flooring that will allow you to make other changes in the future.

Are there any color requirements or preferences for the room? Be sure to choose flooring to work with future color plans.

What are your budget goals for replacing the flooring? You may be willing to spend a bit more if the flooring you choose will enhance the resale value. Having a least a budget range in mind will help your salesperson direct you to the appropriate options.

Finding the answers to these questions will give you a good start to your shopping efforts, making your flooring selection easier and more enjoyable.

If you have, you know that wood floors are the most requested home design feature.

Although you may currently have no plans to sell your home, it’s a good idea to consider resale when renovating your home. Would wood floors be a good investment for you? Consider the following factors.

Neighborhood: If you live in an upscale neighborhood with homes that feature higher-end finishes, choosing wood will make your home more competitive in the market. In an area of starter homes, how about wood in the living/dining area only, or choosing a less expensive wood such as oak? Laminate floors with a look similar to wood at a much lower price are another option to consider.

Home style: A traditional style is well suited to wood. Modern homes have more flooring flexibility, but will also stand out with wood.

Personal preference: You have to choose flooring based on your personal preference first. Many people love wood, but if you don’t, select the flooring that suits you best. However, if you are attracted to wood floors, you can be sure that your choice will make selling your home easier when the time comes.

Picture the same space with a light floor, and it’s clear that the dark wood creates just the right tone of warmth and contrast to anchor the room.

Dark wood floors such as this example of Brazilian Cherry provide a strong base for a more formal decorated space. A floor like this has an almost historical feel, as if the home is a century old. Architectural details such as the high baseboard and the wall moldings and inset spaces create a sense of traditional style. However at the same time the furnishings and colors have a more contemporary approach. This combination is now called transitional style.

Transitional rooms feature the best of the past with the clean lines and colors of today. The slipper chair to the left and the round table on the right would be equally at home in a modern house or one from the 1920’s. The sink and faucets, however, are completely contemporary.

If you are drawn to this balance of modern and traditional and would like to decorate your home in a transitional style, consider starting with a floor like this one – dark and rich and ready to give you a good foundation to support your dream look.

Bamboo flooring is all the rage these days not only for its aesthetic value, but also the environmentally friendly factor it lends to the homes where it is used. To give you a brief idea as to where its eco-friendliness stems from, bamboo is actaully a rapidly growing grass which can reach maturity within a time span of three to seven years. This is tremendously fast – especially when you compare it with other trees which are normally used for wood flooring like oak, which can take up to 120 years to grow to its full height.

Although bamboo is sometimes thought of as exotic, that doesn’t mean it has to be expensive! This makes for a rare combination of eco-friendly and affordable. If you plan to install on your own, before beginning installation, leave the bamboo in the room you wish to use it, for a few days. This process is called acclimation and it allows the bamboo acclimate to the temperature and moisture content of the room preventing any unnecessary expansion and contraction.

If you think bamboo flooring may look too monotone for a whole room, you’d be surprised at the diversity bamboo flooring is now offered in. Bamboo flooring can suit any style of decoration that you are planning to use in your house.

Installation and maintenance of bamboo flooring is very simple. Bamboo flooring can be easily swept every day and does not require special maintenance efforts on your part… except where water is concerned. Keep water contact with the floor at a bare minimum. If some amount of water is spilled, wipe it up immediately. Other than that, sit back and relax and enjoy your environmentally friendly floor!

If you are not familiar with the look of bamboo, you can view samples in our online product catalog by clicking here.

Go Bamboo, Go Green!

We feel it’s important to educate you on how to maintain your floors properly because we know they are an investment that you want to keep. Floors take a lot of abuse, but like anything else, if you treat them well they will return the favor by staying in good shape for as long as possible.

A few things to keep in mind before we talk specifics about cleaning:

Always have walk off mats at every entrance to your home. These are important because they can aide in trapping dirt from shoes before it can enter your home and scratch the floors.

Check your furniture feet to ensure they have feet protectors on the bottom. These will prevent the chair bottoms from scratching and denting your floors when people slide their chairs out to stand up.

Remove any spills as quickly as possible. The longer a spill sits, the more risk you run of damage or permanent staining.

Ok, now let’s talk specifics!

First are foremost, you should always try to use a manufacture approved floor cleaner. (and follow the directions) Why, you ask?

Manufacturers have spent countless hours designing cleaners that are most effective for their product. They know how it was made and what ingredients are most effective in caring for their product.

Side note: You want to follow the directions because we are Americans….. meaning that we generally think that more is better. Many floor cleaners only require minimal amounts of product to achieve optimal results. Too much of a good thing can actually cause more harm than good.

Some warranties can be voided if the proper cleaner is not used. It would be a shame to ruin your floors over a bottle of the wrong cleaner. It happens, believe us!

Using multiple cleaners on the same product (particularly hard surfaces) can leave a film that can permanently damage the floors.
