Column Refrigeration

New Appliance Trends at Arizona Wholesale

Column Refrigerators, Freezers, and Wine Storage

What's a column refrigerator? Columns generally refer to refrigerator, freezer, and wine storage units that can be integrated into standard 24″ deep surrounding cabinets, i.e. fully flush with no hinges or grillwork showing. They are sometimes described as disappearing refrigerators because when installed with matching cabinet panels they cannot be distinguished from surrounding cabinets.

Disappearing-Refrigerator

Columns were first introduced in the U.S. by Miele and Thermador for use in high-end kitchens with sleek European kitchen cabinets. A few years ago Sub Zero launched a complete line of column refrigerators, freezers, and wine storage units.

Today, most of the major full line premium appliance brands offer columns in their lineup. With the flexibility that columns offer, they have appeal in many applications, and locations. Refrigerator and freezer columns can be installed together to create a side-by-side unit. Because these units are different *widths 18″, 24″, 27″, 30″ and 36″ you can customize by matching different width freezer and refrigerator columns. For example, if you don't need a lot of freezer space, it might make sense to install an 18″ wide freezer next to a 30″ wide refrigerator column.

Dacor recently launched its new Modernist appliance collection in Black Stainless Steel. The lineup includes new column refrigerators and freezers. The refrigerator can take a photo of your contents when you open it and email the photo to you so you can check its contents when you are shopping.

One of my personal favorites is Sub Zero's unusual configuration of a combination refrigerator over freezer unit below. It comes in both a 30″ and 36″ version:

Colorful Appliances in 2017

Choose Stainless Steel Appliances or GO BOLD

Red Bertazzoni

We've been following and reporting on appliance colors for years. Here's one from 2015:

Appliance Colors Over a Lifetime

And now here's an update for 2017:

Modern major appliances trace back to the Post WWII era. In the 50's nearly all major appliances were white. Later pink and turquoise began to make their mark, and were popular throughout the 60s. In the 70's Harvest Gold, Avocado, and Coppertone were popular. They eventually morphed into Harvest Wheat, Fresh Avocado, and Coffee. Almond was added and became very popular through the 80's though appliance manufacturers tried to mix things up with 2 new colors that failed miserably – Silver and Sand.

Harvest-Gold

Harvest Gold Drop-In Range

Now, we're in the middle of a resurgence of color choices in appliances. BlueStar, a specialty cooking products manufacturer offers over 250 colors and finishes. Italian appliance manufacturer, Bertazzoni, also has a wide selection of appliance colors. Meanwhile, Viking Range Co. offers a smaller, manageable selection of colors.

To keep things in perspective, here are the results from a 2016 survey by Houzz:

“A whopping 75 percent of those surveyed were going with stainless for the new appliances in their updated kitchens. (White came in at 10 percent and black at 8 percent.)”

Most new appliance sales come from either new home sales or one off replacement sales. Buyers purchasing from production home builders are offered a very limited selection of popular colors. For individual appliance replacement sales, buyers will try to match the appliance color with their existing kitchen appliances.

We might be able to go with White, Black, or the popular Stainless Steel, including some smudge proof Stainless Steel options. GE offers a very interesting and competitively priced appliance finish, Slate. KitchenAid and now some other brands are offering a new appliance finish/color Black Stainless Steel. Mostly black in color, but with the grain and hue of stainless steel Black Stainless Steel is gaining steam. Samsung's Black Stainless Steel is somewhat shiney gray/black and others are more black with the stainless finish visible through the black..

The Big Three appliance manufacturers: Whirlpool, GE, and Frigidaire/Electrolux don't build appliances in Ferrari Red, or Pantone's color of the year for 2017 Greenery. But, if we only looked at the top 5-10% of appliance sales we'd likely find luxury brands that offer more variety in color selections.

Prepare Appliances for Your Vacation

5 Steps to Prepare Your Appliances for Vacation

It's that time of year again. You're getting ready to take your vacation, but you haven't really thought about getIng your appliances ready for your extended absence. Here's a list of what you should do to make sure your appliances will not flood your house, spoil your food, or otherwise create havoc while you're away.

  1. Some appliances, such as your water heater or refrigerator, may have a Vacation Mode. If so, utilize this handy setting. It makes some internal energy saving adjustments.

  2. Run an empty load through your washer and dishwasher. Use whatever cleaner you normally use for cleaning that appliance such as Affresh or LemiShine. For vacations of 2 weeks or longer, prevent odor build up by leaving the door or lid on the washer and dishwasher open while you're away. Pour 1/2 cup of vinegar into the bottom of the dishwasher. This will keep the dishwasher free from odor, and the rubber seal in the bottom of the dishwasher moist.

  3. Turn off the water supply line to refrigerator, washing machine, and dishwasher. (I'm paranoid about water leaks).

  4. For vacations that are more than just a long weekend, remove perishables from the refrigerator, and turn the icemaker off. That usually means just lifting the metal bar in the ice maker to its highest/off position. In some refrigerators only the ice bin is accessible, not the ice maker itself. For these models, there will be a separate on/off switch for the ice maker (see below example).

    Refrigerator-Icemaker

  5. Your refrigerator is going to be on while you're away, and it will use more electricity if it is empty. So, if you've removed most or all of the food from your refrigerator, fill a few empty plastic gallon jugs with water, and place them in the refrigerator.

*Most of the tips are for vacations of a week or longer. For those long 3 day week end trips, I'd just turn off the water lines and turn off the ice maker.

For questions about your specific appliance, check your use and care manual. For information about appliances, floor coverings, window treatments, and more home products consult your designer or builder, then call Arizona Wholesale Supply for an appointment with one of our consultants.

How clear ice machines work

Clear Ice Machines from Arizona Wholesale Supply

Part 2

Ice Cubes

Manually, ice is made by filling ice trays with water and placing them in the freezer compartment. With automatic refrigerator ice makers, we automate the process used to make ice manually. Instead of filling trays, water is piped into a tray in the freezer and the zero degree temperature freezes the water. The cubes are then dumped into an ice bucket.

However, with clear ice machines the ice making process* is substantially different. Water is sprayed onto a cold plate that is kept at 32 degrees Farenheit. Since water freezes at 32 degrees, the water freezes against the cold plate while chemicals and other contaminants fall off, leaving nothing but the clear cubes which are then dropped into the ice bin. The machine continues making ice until the bin is full.

The clear cubes consisting of healthy, pure water are always ready for use, and they never stick together or require breaking apart. That's because the ice bin is not a freezer compartment. The ice cubes are continuously melting and being replaced with new ice cubes. The resulting water is continuously sent out the drain. Depending on the brand and feature set that you select, some ice machines will also produce crushed ice, ice that is chewable, and even colored ice.

Crushed-Ice

Just as your refrigerator ice maker, clear ice machines have filters that regularly need replacing. In addition, they need to be cleaned every 6 months (varies with make and model).

This is Part 2 of our blog series on clear ice machines. Click below for Part 1.

Part 1: Clear Ice Machines

Next blog: Cleaning and maintaining your ice machine.

*There are variations on this, but the end result is the same – the water is frozen in a clear condition without contaminants or air to make it cloudy.

NEW Whirlpool Heat Pump Dryer at AWSCO

Arizona Wholesale introduces NEW Whirlpool heat pump dryer

Whirlpool-Dryer

WED99HEDW

7.3 cu ft. HybridCare™ Ventless Duet® Dryer with Heat Pump Technology

Heat pump clothes drying system from Whirlpool

Whirlpool has launched a new Energy Star® dryer that uses heat pump technology to help dry clothes, saving energy and eliminating the need for outside dryer venting. The energy savings is substantial, and considering that your dryer can be responsible for 10% or more of your total electric bill, it's worth looking into if you're buying new laundry equipment.

If you're building a new house, additional savings comes from not needing duct work and venting for a dryer since the dryer recirculates the air eliminating any outside venting.

Finally, this makes finding a location for a laundry pair much easier since installing duct work is not a concern.

While dryers using some or all of this technology have been around in Europe for quite a while, European dryers also tend to be quite small. This new dryer from Whirlpool has a giant 7.3cu. ft. dryer drum. Also, this drying technology does take somewhat longer to dry. But ror those who can't wait, Whirlpool has included a 5500 watt heating element and a quick dry cycle. Otherwise, consumers can use the balanced cycle, or the eco cycle.

For a quick video from Whirlpool showing how this technology works click on the link below:

Shaw Floors at PCBC2015

FLOORTÉ™: Luxury Vinyl Flooring Collection from Shaw

At Shaw, luxury vinyl flooring—which we often call resilient—is our forte. So we’re calling our latest collection Floorte™.

Floorte™ is a vinyl laminate made using high-definition printing to emulate a hardwood or tile surface. Shaw's engineered FOLD N GO™ locking system makes installation easy. Floorté™ floors are not only strong and durable, but their flexible design helps conceal imperfections in the floor beneath. The high-definition printing creates a highly authentic appearance, and the hardwood designs are created to match the top species and colors of hardwood.

“You can get the wood look without the high-maintenance, a product that hides imperfections in subfloors, and an easy click system,” says Natalie Cady, director of hard surface marketing. “The fact that it’s waterproof is just icing on the cake.”

Laminate Coreboard Technology

An Eco-Friendly Alternative

Known for being committed to the environment, Shaw Floors laminate options are an ideal choice for all of us who are environmentally conscious. Shaw laminates have a long life span. Replacement is something you won't even think about for many years to come.

Why Choose Laminate?

Since laminate is made to look like and even feel like hardwood, maybe you're wondering why you shouldn't just buy hardwood? Shaw floors has a great selection of hardwood floors. But, here are some reasons you may want laminate:

  1. As always, price may be a consideration. Laminate can be half the price of hardwoods. And the easier, quicker installation, can save you money, also.

  2. Even though hardwood is a “natural” product, laminate is much more durable than hardwood. It's not nearly as likely to scratch or split. It's much more resist moisture damage, and maintenance is a breeze. There's less wear and tear, and it's very resistant to spills and stains.

  3. Laminate is also versatile. Various wood grains, colors, tints and patterns are limited only by consumer demand.

Frank Lloyd Wright Home vs. Arcadia District

Controversy over Frank Lloyd Wright Home

Wright-House

In 1952, an 84 year-old Frank Lloyd Wright designed a home in the Arcadia District of Phoenix for one of his son's and daughter-in-law. Recently, the home was purchased by attorney Zach Rawling who grew up nearby. His purchase most likely saved the house from being bulldozed. Rawling subsequently set up The David and Gladys Wright Foundation to preserve the house and open it for tours as a museum. If plans are approved, Rawling intends to deed the house and property over to the foundaton.

After purchasing some adjacent properties in an effort to create an appropriate surrounding, Rawling also leased offsite parking from a nearby church. Additionally, he is proposing an event center, gift shop, and café. All are undergound, to help preserve the grounds.

Nevertheless, some of the neighbors are unhappy. In particular, Peter Sperling, the son of University of Phoenix founder, is conducting an active campaign opposing the project. Evidently, he's OK with preserving the house for the neighborhood, just not with letting the rest of us have an opportunity to visit. In a letter to the Arizona Republic. Sperling writes about Frank Lloyd Wright's desire to blend into the “natural beauty.” I don't know whether he's referring to all the native citrus trees or the sprawling homes of Phoenix's Arcadia District:

“His gorgeous works did more than just fit in with the existing land and environment — they exalted them. He did not construct buildings to stick out of nearby mountains like sore thumbs, but rather to blend into them and reflect the natural beauty that existed there already.”

Of course, perhaps Wright's most famous and loved building is The Guggenheim Museum in New York City which hardly blends into the “natural beauty” of Manhattan's Upper Eastside.

NYC-Guggenheim

The Wright House in Arcadia is a stunning home, but it can hardly be claimed that this house blends into the neighborhood. Neighbors, while thankful that Rawling saved the house from destruction, are primarily concerned about what its commercialization will mean. It will be interesting to see if the community and Rawling and his foundation will find common ground. Utlimately, the city will determine whether they are going to issue the permits necessary to proceed with the project.
