Column Refrigeration

New Appliance Trends at Arizona Wholesale

Column Refrigerators, Freezers, and Wine Storage

What's a column refrigerator? Columns generally refer to refrigerator, freezer, and wine storage units that can be integrated into standard 24″ deep surrounding cabinets, i.e. fully flush with no hinges or grillwork showing. They are sometimes described as disappearing refrigerators because when installed with matching cabinet panels they cannot be distinguished from surrounding cabinets.

Disappearing-Refrigerator

Columns were first introduced in the U.S. by Miele and Thermador for use in high-end kitchens with sleek European kitchen cabinets. A few years ago Sub Zero launched a complete line of column refrigerators, freezers, and wine storage units.

Today, most of the major full line premium appliance brands offer columns in their lineup. With the flexibility that columns offer, they have appeal in many applications, and locations. Refrigerator and freezer columns can be installed together to create a side-by-side unit. Because these units are different *widths 18″, 24″, 27″, 30″ and 36″ you can customize by matching different width freezer and refrigerator columns. For example, if you don't need a lot of freezer space, it might make sense to install an 18″ wide freezer next to a 30″ wide refrigerator column.

Dacor recently launched its new Modernist appliance collection in Black Stainless Steel. The lineup includes new column refrigerators and freezers. The refrigerator can take a photo of your contents when you open it and email the photo to you so you can check its contents when you are shopping.

Dacor Columns

One of my personal favorites is Sub Zero's unusual configuration of a combination refrigerator over freezer unit below. It comes in both a 30″ and 36″ version:

Call one of our showroom locations today, and make an appointment with one of our appliance consultants to view and learn more about column refrigeration.

*All sizes are not available in each brand.

Note: As of this date (May 20, 2017) our Phoenix showroom is undergoing a complete remodeling and is not open for visitors. Look for our grand re-opening later this year.

Black Stainless Steel – Here to stay?

Why Black Stainless may be here to stay

Check out available Black Stainless Steel appliances at Arizona Wholesale

KitchenAid gets the nod for the early adopter that began promoting its Black Stainless Steel appliances, but it takes more than one brand to get a new appliance finish past the experimental stage (Anybody remember Jenn-Air Oiled Bronze appliances?)

But now, we've seen Whirlpool, Maytag, Samsung, and Dacor join KitchenAid in the Black Stainless Steel club. Word has it that Frigidaire is entering the Black Stainless Steel parade with it's full line, including entry level models. It looks like an appliance party to me.

Black Stainless Steel is fingerprint resistant and is made of a stainless steel treated with a chemical baked on at 1200 degrees F for several hours. It's neither painted nor is it part of the stainless steel itself. While it should be durable, it is nevertheless, something applied to a sheet of stainless steel.

Black Stainless Steel has been touted as a color/finish that can be mixed in with other appliances. There is, however, some concern that the Black Stainless Steel on KitchenAid does not match the finish on Samsung which has a shiny coating.

It's been a challenge for other colors and finishes to take the place of stainless steel. There are some interesting alternatives out there such as GE's Slate and a host of custom order bright appliance colors from luxury brands such as Bertazzoni, BlueStar, and others. Even with all the choices currently available, industry data shows that Stainless Steel is actually gaining in popularity against the others.

While industry veterans are by nature skeptical, Black Stainless Steel could be just the change that consumers have been wanting. Long Live Stainless Steel and Welcome Black Stainless Steel.

Arizona Wholesale Scottsdale Cook-Off

Outdoor Grilling Event in Scottsdale

Eight Top Brands Cook for our Trade Customers

Before the heat really hits the Valley, Arizona Wholesale hosted their customers to a grilling cook-off. Some of the best grilling brands you can find, showed their stuff on the outdoor patio of Arizona Wholesale's Scottsdale showroom at The Design Center in Scottsdale. Take a look!

Hestan is a luxury grill brand that in just a few years has made a big mark in outdoor grilling. Luxury features include grill lighting that goes on and off when you open and close the hood. By the way, the hood is counterbalanced so that it will stay open in any position. Known also for their Napa Winery and a line of cookware, Hestan offers a broad array of stylish grills. Marty Sanchez, local appliance expert, shows his cooking skills on this built-in Hestan Grill.

One of my favorite grills, Dacor, pulled out all the stops for the Cook-Off by bringing their Dacor Grills on Wheels to the event. They've outfitted a trailer with Dacor Grills that they take to events to cook up some special treats.

Caliber Appliances, another California-based company, has a great variety of outdoor grills including this traditional grill that they used during the cook-off.

and this unique Rockwell Grill.

Going back to traditional grills, Wolf, one of the most famous indoor cooking brands, also has a great lineup of outdoor grills. Here they are at the Arizona Wholesale Cook-Off with one of their most popular models.

Do you like Pizza? How would you like to have your own outdoor Pizza Oven? Here are a couple of examples below:

This pizza oven from WoodStone is built-in to a brick console, and is outfitted with a granite countertop and under-counter refrigerator.

Here's a portable outdoor pizza oven from Lynx. When you sell your house, you'll definitely want to take this with you!

Appliance Exhibitors at IBS/KBIS

Visiting Appliance Manufacturers at IBS/KBIS

Are you heading to this week's (Jan.19-22, 2016) International Builder Show/Kitchen and Bath Show (IBS/KBIS), now known as Design and Construction Week (DCW)? If so, you may want to visit some key appliance vendors. Here's an up-to-date run down:

BSH

For the last few years BSH (Bosch, Thermador, Gaggenau) have had a good sized both in the Central Hall displaying their product lines, and have made some major product launches from there. The booth has been busy and crowded, but to their credit it has also been well-staffed by knowledgable sales associates.

Electrolux

Another manufacturer with quite a large booth, Electrolux, has been located in the North Hall, displaying their Frigidaire, Frigidaire Professional, Electrolux, and Icon product lines. This would be a good place to see and TOUCH their Smudge-Proof Stainless Steel appliances.

GE

General Electric Appliances, soon to be a part of Haier, has a modest, but sufficient booth near the entrance to the Central Hall.

Viking

Viking (Middleby) has had a busy booth in the North Hall, that has been a good place for me to meet up with friends and associates. There always seems to be something going on here. Middleby (Viking's owner) has been acquiring new brands recently. It will be interesting to see if they integrate these new products into the Viking booth.

Dacor

Dacor has been showing their appliances at IBS/KBIS in conjunction with other kitchen brands, eg. cabinets. Las year they had some activities going on off-site at the Las Vegas Mandarin Oriental.

Jenn-Air

Jenn-Air has not been formally displaying at IBS/KBIS for several years, but is a sponsor of the NKBA design competition, and has had product displayed in other exhibits with kitchen cabinets, etc.

Whirlpool

Whirlpool also has not been displaying at IBS/KBIS for several years, though they had a large display at this year's Consumer Electronics Show (CES). ??? However, It does appear that Whirlpool Appliances are featured in a show house built in the parking lot of IBS/KBIS.

Keep your eyes open and check the directories for other brands such as Asko, Bertazzoni, Elica, Miele, Scotsman, and Vent-A-Hood.

For more information on or appointments with these or other vendors at DCW contact your Arizona Wholesale Supply representative.

Hi-Tech Appliances for Your Home #1

Wi-Fi Enabled Wall Ovens and Ranges

Interested in Hi-Tech remote control enabled appliances? Several appliance manufacturers have introduced remote controlled appliances that take advantage of 21st century computer technology to make your appliances “smart”. This might mean an appliance with a temperature probe that’s accessible remotely or even appliances that can be controlled remotely from miles away using wi-fi on either an iPhone or Android device. Here are three brands that have jumped into wireless enabled ranges and ovens within the last couple of years, GE, Dacor, and now Viking. Jenn-Air is getting ready to launch a wi-fi enabled oven, and others are sure to join.

GE Brillion

GE Brillion

GE Brillion is a wi-fi app that communicates with either iPhone or Android, and can be used to pre-heat your oven, get an alert when the food is ready, or adjust the temperature from your easy chair. GE was early to show a wi-fi enabled oven, and the Brillion app seems to be practical and designed to have wide appeal.

Here’s how GE describes this capability:

Get the GE Brillion App For Hands-On Convenience and Peace of Mind

Turn your smart phone into a remote control for your WiFi Connect appliances! Get the GE Brillion app for your Android or iPhone, and you’ll be able to change appliance settings, keep an eye on your appliance status and cycles, and get maintenance alerts—all from your mobile device!

APP WORKS ONLY WITH GE’S BRILLION-ENABLED APPLIANCES.

Dacor Discovery IQ

Discovery-IQ

Dacor’s Discovery™ Series Wall Oven and 48″ Range both come with a 7″ LCD glass touch screen panel. It’s a high-tech experience from the 1GHZ processor to stereo sound, and complete Wi-Fi connection capability through the built-in Discovery IQ Controller that enables users to research new recipes or view demonstrations throught their home Wi-Fi network. The oven will even text you when your food is cooked. Here’s how Dacor describes the Discovery™ IQ:

The IQ eliminates the guesswork associated with preparing popular dishes and family recipes by way of a pre-programmed guide. It enables users to prepare a wide range of dishes to perfection with the touch of a finger. Simply select the desired recipe from the display menu, insert the dish, initiate the program and relax as the oven takes care of the rest.

Viking

iDevice Accessory

iDevice

Viking has taken a different approach by offering an accessory from iDevice that has a meat thermometer connected to a separate digital temperature readout that can be accessed remotely by Bluetooth® via an Apple or Android device. The iDevice enables Bluetooth® monitoring from up to 200 feet away.

Buying a Built-In Coffee Machine

3 Tips when choosing a built-in coffee maker

Wolf-coffee-maker

Wolf Coffee Maker

1. Location, Location, Location

Where are you going to install the coffee maker? In most cases, your new coffee maker will go in an upper wall cabinet, often above or next to an oven. However, if your searching for a location and can't seem to find one, here's just one idea that might work:

The space at the end of the kitchen counter (above) is a perfect fit for a built-in coffee maker. The cabinet is white, and the matching side panels for the front were cut to fit for the coffee maker.

2. Dimensions

Most coffee machines have a 24″ width. They'll fit perfectly in a 24″ cabinet, but will need a filler for 27″ or 30″ wide cabinets. Some manufacturers provide matching stainless steel fillers, or you may wish to install matching cabinet fillers.

3. Utilities (Electrical and Plumbing)

If you don't conveniently have electrical available at the back of your coffee maker, you'll need to consult with your designer or electrician to get electrical service behind the coffee machine. Also, some coffee machines need to be connected to plumbing, so if you don't have a water supply line convenient, your plumber will need to run a line to the back of your coffee machine. However, many coffee makers have internal tanks that you can fill with no need for external plumbing. Miele has a coffee maker that can be externally plumbed or used with an included water tank.

While these are clearly important considerations for choosing a built-in coffee maker, there's more to think about including a host of features and prices that vary from brand to brand. Over the last decade the industry has changed dramatically. Where there used to be only a couple of built-in coffee maker brands, now nearly all of the higher end brands have their own coffee maker models.

Here are some of the coffee machine brands you'll find available at Arizona Wholesale Supply.

Bosch
Brew Express
Dacor
Electrolux
Gaggenau
Jenn-Air
Miele
Thermador
Wolf
Viking

Be sure to consult an appliance specialist for help in selecting your new coffee maker. The experts at Arizona Wholesale Supply are well-trained in the key brands as well as many of the specialty brands. Call or visit today.
