Appliances that are practical

Intuitive Innovation in Appliances

Major Appliances that Just Make Sense

There's a lot of talk these days about smart appliances. That usually refers to an appliance that can be connected and operated through bluetooth or wi-fi to an remote electronic device such as a smartphone. Most innovative appliances these days, are all about this connectivity. However, most of the great innovations in appliances over time had nothing to do with high-tech designs.

We often trace the history of modern appliances to the early 1950's when a deluge of convenient major appliances became popular in the post WWII expansion. Automatic washers and dryers replaced wringer-type washing machines and clothes hanging on a line. Frost-free refrigerators, self-cleaning ovens, and dishwashers all began to show up in our kitchens. These were all products that had demonstrable work-saving benefits, and the American public gobbled them up.

In the mid to late 90's, full-sized front loading washing machines took the country by storm. But there was also another appliance that caught the attention of many appliance buyers, The Double Oven Range.

I've always referred to this as the perfect example of “intuitive innovation”. Created by Maytag, and called the Gemini Range, the innovation was evident just by looking at it. In the space below a range's cooking surface, Maytag added a small oven/broiler, with a full-sized oven below the small oven.Viola, two ovens in a range that used to have only one oven and a storage drawer. The Gemini Range was a big success for Maytag, and was soon copied by all the competitors in this category.

Today, you can find double-oven ranges by these major brands: Frigidaire, GE, GE Café, GE Profile, Maytag, Samsung, Whirlpool, and KitchenAid. Of course, all are available at Arizona Wholesale Supply. Ask your builder or designer and call Arizona Wholesale Supply for an appointment today.

Fixing The Galley Kitchen

Efficiency and Space in an updated Galley Kitchen

The term galley kitchen goes back to the galleys on ships and carries forward to home kitchens that are built in an aisle with counters, cabinets, and appliances facing each other as in this photo (This Old House).

Galley-Kitchen

Galley kitchens are the antithesis of the open kitchens that are de riguer these days. Galley kitchens are closed off, and can be cramped and crowded to work in. If you have a galley kitchen, and want a more open kitchen, you should work with a designer to explore your options. Occasionally, a wall can be opened to create addition space, or a window might be added to give a more open look and feel.

However, while opening things up in your galley kitchen creates a more open feel, it often doesn't create additional space. If you need additional cabinets, more counter space, or freedom from bumping into appliances that stick-out into the room here are 3 ideas from the appliance guru that might help.

1. Counter depth or built-in appliances

Most appliance manufacturers now offer counter-depth refrigerators that will not push out into your kitchen aisle, and some brands have built-in refrigerators, that will be flush with your cabinet faces. However, it's not unusual for freestanding ranges to stick out a bit into the kitchen, and some pro ranges will stick out more than just a bit, so take care when choosing a range. Since galley kitchens usually have opposing workspaces, it's important that refrigerator, range and dishwasher doors have enough clearance to fully open,

While some dishwashers have fronts that can stick out a bit from the cabinet front, others can be installed flush. Always be careful about installing dishwashers in a corner. If the dishwasher has a protruding handle, it may prevent an adjacent corner door or drawer from opening.

2. Narrow width appliances.

With influence from Europe, there has been a revival of smaller width appliances. Luxury brands such as Wolf and Miele offer 24″ wide ovens along with their standard width American-sized models. Similarly, there are also more choices in 24-inch wide freestanding and slide-in ranges. All of these options create more space in cramped galley kitchens.

3. More accessible appliances.

There are a host of new appliances now on the market that are designed to provide greater accessibility. For example, nearly all major brands now offer microwave drawers, ideally installed under countertops. Great for accessibility, this product also frees up space on countertops or upper cabinets.

Microwave-Drawer

In the last couple of years Sub Zero has introduced a wide array of undercounter refrigerator and freezer drawers in different sizes and configuration. They also have an amazing selection of wine storage units, traditional undercounter refrigerators, and beverage centers. Much of the industry has followed their lead and similar undercounter units are widely available in different configurations, brands, and price points.

Buying Appliances to Save Energy

Making Sense out of Energy Savings Appliances

Question. Can I justify buying new appliances based on energy savings alone?

Answer. Maybe. If your current appliances are old energy hogs, you may be able to justify replacement for energy savings alone because the savings will pay for the replacement. This applies more to washers, dishwashers, and refrigerators than it does to ranges, ovens, cooktops, and dryers.

Here are three specific recommendations:

  1. Topload agitator-type washing machines are real culprits. In general, the older they are the more water they use, and the more water they use, the higher the energy costs, because of the cost to heat the water.

  2. Here's a quick way to find out if your dishwasher is an energy hog. If you have a porcelain tub dishwasher which has no filterbasket, it's very likely a big energy user. Energy saving dishwashers are likely to have stainless or polystyrene tubs and often use a wash system with a filter basket vs. a built-in food chopper.

  3. Does your refrigerator make a loud clunking sound when the compressor turns on? That's a good clue that this has a traditional compressor that runs a long time at high speed to provide cooling and then shuts down for a long period. Most refrigerators today have smaller more efficient compressors that do not cycle on and off but slow down and speed up based on cooling demand.

Another test you might use is age. If an appliance is over 15 years old, consider it suspect. If the appliance is working well, not service prone, and you just love it, then keep it. But, when you have the next service call on old Bessie, it's time to say goodby. The combined cost of repair and potential energy savings of a new appliance make a compelling case for replacement.

There are other reasons to replace appliances such as a kitchen remodel or a move into a new house, but use the above recommendations to think through your appliance replacement needs. New SMEG Appliances at Arizona Wholesale

What's New at Arizona Wholesale Supply?

SMEG Appliances from Italy

A few years ago Fiat automobiles were relaunched in the U.S. with some very clever TV commercials announcing “The Italians are coming.” Well, they sure are, but their invasion has not been limited to automobiles. Italian appliances have also made their mark in the U.S. over the past few years. Among the latest, is the Italian brand SMEG. It's now available in Arizona at Arizona Wholesale Supply.

I had an advance notice about SMEG. While vacationing in England a few years ago, we were wandering the streets of Bath, and passed an appliance store. In deference to my wife, I resisted the urge to go inside, but I did check out the SMEG refrigerator in the window display. Now, this upscale Italian brand is available in the U.S. As you can see the refrigerator has a distinct retro 50's look, and is available in an array of colors including the pastel blue below. Getting to know your new dishwasher

New Dishwasher? What Now?

3 Steps to get you going with your new dishwasher.

Dishwasher

You finally have the new dishwasher you’ve been wanting for so long! You’re just itching to load it full of dirty dishes, and let the new dishwasher do its magic. Well, not just yet. Let’s take a few minutes to familiarize ourselves with this magic machine. Here’s a list of three steps that will get you headed in the right direction:

  1. Check the exterior. Is the dishwasher level? Does the door open and close without rubbing or hitting anything? Make sure that the dishwasher is fastened in and doesn’t fall forward when you open the door. The electrical should be connected to a grounded outlet or junction box, and the water line connected to the water supply and turned on. The dishwasher drain line must also be connected at your disposer or sink. The water inlet and drain fittings should be tight and the hoses should have no kinks. All OK? Let’s move on to step 2.

  2. Check the interior. Have all the packing materials, and manuals been removed? Remove any pieces of styrofoam wedged against the dishwasher racks that keep them from rolling back and forth during shipping. Now, roll the racks back and forth to make sure there is nothing impeding their movement. If everything looks good inside and out, we can move on to step 3.

  3. Find your use and care manual. Somewhere inside your dishwasher, or in an adjacent drawer there should be a plastic bag with the warranty, install instructions, a use and care manual, and various other treasures. Before throwing all this in a box with the rest of your papers, remove the use and care manual from the bag. Well, maybe you’re not going to read the entire manual, but at a minimum you should familiarize yourself with the dishwasher operation and controls…please!

If you want to find out even more on general dishwasher use and care, we’ve produced a new video covering some of the essentials. It’s only about 3 minutes long, and should get you going in the right direction. Watch below:

Dishwasher Detergent: Pods or Powder?

The great debate for getting dishes clean

Should you use dishwasher detergent powder or pods

Dishwasher-Pods

I’ve done some research on this subject and have expressed my opinion in the past. That’s all about to change.

Reasons to use dishwasher detergent powder:

  1. It’s less expensive to use powder than it is to use dishwasher pods.
  2. Users can control the amount of detergent based on the size of the dishwasher load. It makes sense that if the dishwasher is only half full, you wouldn’t want to use the same amount of detergent, but the pods are one size fits all.
  3. When the detergent pods are dispensed from the soap dispenser they can easily fall behind a cup or dish where they won’t get the water spray that causes them to dissolve. Failure for dishwasher pods to dissolve is probably the number one complaint that users make regarding pods.

Reasons to use dishwasher detergent pods:

  1. The pods are very convenient: no measuring, and no spillage.
  2. Detergent pods are dispensed from the dishwasher just like the powder is, but unlike powder, the pods dissolve over time providing a continuous supply of detergent through the cycle for cleaner dishes.
  3. Recommended not just by the detergent companies, but also by the major dishwasher manufacturers, AND Consumers’ Union.

The Appliance Guru Recommendation

In the past, I’ve held the view that while pods are money makers for the detergent company, the powder gives the user more flexibility and costs less. However, I cannot escape the reality that the pods seem to do a better job. After conversations with users, personal observations, and reviewing the testing of CU, I have become convinced that pods are the better choice over dishwasher detergent powder.

HOWEVER, I am adamantly opposed to the pods being manufactured in multi-colored packets that small children perceive as candy. I know that parents should keep chemicals away from their kids, but I still can’t see why detergent manufacturers have to make their detergent appear to be edible.

P.S. Chemicals are one small part of getting clean dishes. Call or visit the experts at Arizona Wholesale Supply for advice on the best dishwashers to choose for your new home or kitchen remodel.

Spring Cleaning Your Dishwasher

4 Tips for Cleaning and Maintaining your Dishwasher

1. Clean the dishwasher filter

Some dishwashers have built-in food disposers, i.e. choppers (above) while others have filters that collect larger food particles. Periodically, the filters need to be removed and cleaned. Read the operating instructions of your dishwasher to determine how often your dishwasher filter needs cleaning. We clean ours about once a month.

2. Check for water leaks and bad seals.

It’s a good idea to examine and clean the gasket that seals the dishwasher door with the liner. Eventually, this seal could develop tears, gaps, or cracks. Replace when necessary (service call). Also, take a look at the water inlet connection and hose, as well as the drain hose. If your house is older, the water inlet valve might show some corrosion. Be aware, that this could become a problem, so keep an eye on it. When you eventually replace the dishwasher, replace the connecting hoses as well as the valve. In the meantime, any hoses that show signs of kinks, splits or leaks should be replaced.

3. Inspect the dishwasher interior.

Do the dishwasher racks roll in and out smoothly? You might be able to tighten or replace a faulty wheel. Also, if any of the coating on the racks has worn off, the racks could begin to rust. Take a good look at the dishwasher tank itself, and satisfy yourself that it is also in good condition.

4. Test the controls and give the dishwasher front a good once over.

As long as you’re doing periodic maintenance, test the dishwasher controls. You never know when you might want to use the quick wash, the china cycle, the sani-cyle, etc. Finally, run your hand along the door edges, examine the latch and hinges: lubricate if needed.

Depending on the dishwasher, an average life expectancy could be 10-12 years. Premium dishwashers might easily last for up to 15 years. And at least one of the very high end luxury (expensive) dishwashers is promoted as being built to last 20 years. Take good care of your dishwasher and it will take good care of you.

When it’s time to replace, have your contractor or remodeler contact Arizona Wholesale Supply to help you with a new dishwasher that meets your needs and your budget. Arizona Wholesale Supply carries all the major brands as well as a wide variety of specialty brands, and has been Arizona’s leading distributor since 1944. Family Owned and Operated.

Maytag Durable Dishwashers

Maytag Appliances Focus on Durability – Warranty

New Maytag Dishwashers Take a New Direction

See The Maytag Man of 2034

Many of us grew up with the Maytag Repairman. He was known as Ol’ Lonely. But these days you don’t hear the words “Ol’ Lonely.” And the iconic Maytag Repairman is no longer a repair man. Today, he’s simply called the Maytag Man. There’s a reason for this change. Maytag feels that having a Repair Man as your spokesperson, even a lonely one, focuses on the negative. The POSITIVE…the reason why the repairman is lonely…is the story of Maytag’s dependability and durability.

The Maytag Man

Maytag-Man

He’s the heart and sole of dependability

Maytag’s new dishwasher, for example is not the same as some of its sister brands under the Whirlpool umbrella. Here’s how Maytag describes its best model:

MDB8969SDM

OUR QUIETEST DISHWASHER EVER WITH LARGE CAPACITY

Our quietest dishwasher ever has all the cleaning power of Maytag without the ruckus. It’s built with the most powerful motor on the market to handle dried-on egg yolk on plates and peanut butter on knives. Plus, this reliable dishwasher features a 4-blade stainless steel chopper and disposer to chew up scraps and the PowerBlast™ cycle to rinse them all away. And when it comes to loading and unloading, the premium ball-bearing rack glides on the upper rack are built to stand up to a decade of openings and closings and still slide out smooth. We built this large-capacity dishwasher with tough stainless steel to take on the worst messes. Then we made it our quietest ever at only 47 dBA1—even quieter than coffee brewing. This reliable dishwasher also comes backed with a 10-year limited parts warranty, and it’s assembled in Findlay, Ohio at the largest dishwasher manufacturing plant in the world.

  • Even though this dishwasher has a 4-blade stainless steel chopper and disposer – unlike filter-based models, this Maytag still has a respectably quiet 47dba sound rating.
  • Continuing to defy conventional wisdom, instead of using a tiny European style motor, Maytag proudly promotes the largest, most powerful motor in the industry.
  • You can see why Maytag isn’t afraid of offering a 10-year limited parts warranty.

Maytag is so confident of it’s durability, it is already training the Maytag Man of 2034. See video below:

Please don’t try this at home. As you can tell, Simon is a professional!
