Colorful Appliances in 2017

Choose Stainless Steel Appliances or GO BOLD

Red Bertazzoni

We've been following and reporting on appliance colors for years. Here's one from 2015:

Appliance Colors Over a Lifetime

And now here's an update for 2017:

Modern major appliances trace back to the Post WWII era. In the 50's nearly all major appliances were white. Later pink and turquoise began to make their mark, and were popular throughout the 60s. In the 70's Harvest Gold, Avocado, and Coppertone were popular. They eventually morphed into Harvest Wheat, Fresh Avocado, and Coffee. Almond was added and became very popular through the 80's though appliance manufacturers tried to mix things up with 2 new colors that failed miserably – Silver and Sand.

Harvest-Gold

Harvest Gold Drop-In Range

Now, we're in the middle of a resurgence of color choices in appliances. BlueStar, a specialty cooking products manufacturer offers over 250 colors and finishes. Italian appliance manufacturer, Bertazzoni, also has a wide selection of appliance colors. Meanwhile, Viking Range Co. offers a smaller, manageable selection of colors.

To keep things in perspective, here are the results from a 2016 survey by Houzz:

“A whopping 75 percent of those surveyed were going with stainless for the new appliances in their updated kitchens. (White came in at 10 percent and black at 8 percent.)”

Most new appliance sales come from either new home sales or one off replacement sales. Buyers purchasing from production home builders are offered a very limited selection of popular colors. For individual appliance replacement sales, buyers will try to match the appliance color with their existing kitchen appliances.

We might be able to go with White, Black, or the popular Stainless Steel, including some smudge proof Stainless Steel options. GE offers a very interesting and competitively priced appliance finish, Slate. KitchenAid and now some other brands are offering a new appliance finish/color Black Stainless Steel. Mostly black in color, but with the grain and hue of stainless steel Black Stainless Steel is gaining steam. Samsung's Black Stainless Steel is somewhat shiney gray/black and others are more black with the stainless finish visible through the black..

The Big Three appliance manufacturers: Whirlpool, GE, and Frigidaire/Electrolux don't build appliances in Ferrari Red, or Pantone's color of the year for 2017 Greenery. But, if we only looked at the top 5-10% of appliance sales we'd likely find luxury brands that offer more variety in color selections.

Smart Appliances for 2017

Have internet appliances finally arrived?

Smart Refrigerator from Samsung

In 2000 at the CES (Consumer Electronics Show), LG Electronics introduced the first internet-enabled refrigerator. The refrigerator had a color TV screen on the outside along with many hi-tech features, and a price tag around $20K. About the same time Electrolux launched the ScreenFridge. In 2006, Electrolux tried again with a more deluxe version, and in 2007 Whirlpool showed a new CentralPark Connection, a data hub and entertainment center that plugs into the refrigeration. While none of these were successful, appliance manufacturers have not given up, and the new improved versions show a lot of promise, and a much lower price. Here's one model from Samsung that appears to be gaining steam.

Tips for Selecting Appliances

Appliance Help for New Homebuyers

Arizona Wholesale Supply is Arizona's Leading Builder Distributor

Appliance-Package

New homebuyers have to make a lot of choices when selecting all the finishes, and products that go into their dream home. Fortunately, production home builders preselect options and upgrades that are suitable for their homes. Even so, making appliance selections can be very challenging. Here are a few tips in choosing appliances:

  1. Narrow the field. If your builder has a list of models and packages that are available to you, part of your work is already done. Don't waste time looking at brands or models that aren't available for the home you are purchasing. Even If you are building a custom home, there will still be some constraints based on the size of your kitchen, location of gas, water, and electric lines, etc.

  2. Budget and plan accordingly. If it's been a number of years since you purchased major appliances, get prepared for some sticker shock. Today's appliances will save money on energy usage, and still are a very good buy when factoring inflation over the years. However, when you want a built-in refrigerator, combo ovens, and other premium appliances such as wine storage units, built-in warming drawers, steam ovens and coffee makers, you're going well into 5 figures ($XX,XXX.XX).

  3. Consider brands. At Arizona Wholesale Supply, we carry the popular priced major production brands GE, Whirlpool, and Frigidaire (Electrolux). We also are your supplier for upscale brands, such as GE Profile, Electrolux, KitchenAid, and Bosch, as well as a host of luxury brands such as Jenn-Air, Monogram, Viking, SubZero-Wolf, Thermador, Miele and many more. Most production home builders offer selections from only a single brand or two, and even semi-custom builders usually stick with a few preferred brands. For that matter, new home buyers tend to pick most or all their appliances from a single brand that they prefer. It not only narrows choices to products that the buyer is going to be comfortable with, appliance brands tend to have matching handles, knobs, etc.

  4. Work with a professional. Arizona Wholesale Supply consultants have many years experience with home builders, designers, and new home buyers. If your builder or design professional is one of the many that we supply, you can make an appointment at one of our locations to select your appliances.

Arizona Wholesale Supply is a family owned company, based right here in Arizona, and we've been at this for over 70 years.

Appliance Exhibitors at IBS/KBIS

Visiting Appliance Manufacturers at IBS/KBIS

Are you heading to this week's (Jan.19-22, 2016) International Builder Show/Kitchen and Bath Show (IBS/KBIS), now known as Design and Construction Week (DCW)? If so, you may want to visit some key appliance vendors. Here's an up-to-date run down:

BSH

For the last few years BSH (Bosch, Thermador, Gaggenau) have had a good sized both in the Central Hall displaying their product lines, and have made some major product launches from there. The booth has been busy and crowded, but to their credit it has also been well-staffed by knowledgable sales associates.

Electrolux

Another manufacturer with quite a large booth, Electrolux, has been located in the North Hall, displaying their Frigidaire, Frigidaire Professional, Electrolux, and Icon product lines. This would be a good place to see and TOUCH their Smudge-Proof Stainless Steel appliances.

GE

General Electric Appliances, soon to be a part of Haier, has a modest, but sufficient booth near the entrance to the Central Hall.

Viking

Viking (Middleby) has had a busy booth in the North Hall, that has been a good place for me to meet up with friends and associates. There always seems to be something going on here. Middleby (Viking's owner) has been acquiring new brands recently. It will be interesting to see if they integrate these new products into the Viking booth.

Dacor

Dacor has been showing their appliances at IBS/KBIS in conjunction with other kitchen brands, eg. cabinets. Las year they had some activities going on off-site at the Las Vegas Mandarin Oriental.

Jenn-Air

Jenn-Air has not been formally displaying at IBS/KBIS for several years, but is a sponsor of the NKBA design competition, and has had product displayed in other exhibits with kitchen cabinets, etc.

Whirlpool

Whirlpool also has not been displaying at IBS/KBIS for several years, though they had a large display at this year's Consumer Electronics Show (CES). ??? However, It does appear that Whirlpool Appliances are featured in a show house built in the parking lot of IBS/KBIS.

Keep your eyes open and check the directories for other brands such as Asko, Bertazzoni, Elica, Miele, Scotsman, and Vent-A-Hood.

For more information on or appointments with these or other vendors at DCW contact your Arizona Wholesale Supply representative.

PCBC 2015

What is the PCBC?

PCBC

Launched in 1959 as a small educational conference at the Sheraton Palace Hotel in San Francisco, PCBC is now an annual two-day conference, product display and business exchange and is open to anyone professionally involved in the building industry, including builders, developers, architects, remodelers, designers, contractors, dealers/distributors and suppliers/manufacturers.

Keynote-Speech

In the past, PCBC was an acronym for “Pacific Coast Builders Conference”. Over time the name became an inaccurate reflection of the audience, as the show now draws attendees from all over the United States, Canada, Mexico and more than 25 other countries. Today the show is known simply as PCBC.

PCBC alternates each year between San Francisco and San Diego and has been endorsed as the official show of Leading Builders of America (LBA), whose membership includes 21 of the largest publicly and privately held homebuilders in the nation.

This year the PCBC is being held in San Diego on June 24th and June 25th. Many builders and designers from Arizona attend the PCBC, and many manufacturers of products distributed by Arizona Wholesale Supply will be exhibiting at the PCBC.

PCBC-Exhibit-Floor

PCBC Exhibit Floor

Among the exhibiters at PCBC, two exhibit prize winners winners came from the appliance category:

Viking Range, LLC: Viking Professional TurboChef Oven
Whirlpool Corporation: Whirlpool® HybridCareTM Heat Pump Dryer

Some of the manufacturers supplying Arizona Wholesale Supply that will be exhibiting at this year’s PCBC are:

  • ClosetMaid
  • DalTile
  • Electrolux
  • GE Appliances
  • Shaw Industries
  • Viking Group
  • Whirlpool

We’ll be attending and reporting back on what’s what and who’s who at this year’s PCBC. Look forward to seeing you there! Check back here often for updates on PCBC 2015.

Spring Cleaning Your Dishwasher

4 Tips for Cleaning and Maintaining your Dishwasher

1. Clean the dishwasher filter

Some dishwashers have built-in food disposers, i.e. choppers (above) while others have filters that collect larger food particles. Periodically, the filters need to be removed and cleaned. Read the operating instructions of your dishwasher to determine how often your dishwasher filter needs cleaning. We clean ours about once a month.

2. Check for water leaks and bad seals.

It’s a good idea to examine and clean the gasket that seals the dishwasher door with the liner. Eventually, this seal could develop tears, gaps, or cracks. Replace when necessary (service call). Also, take a look at the water inlet connection and hose, as well as the drain hose. If your house is older, the water inlet valve might show some corrosion. Be aware, that this could become a problem, so keep an eye on it. When you eventually replace the dishwasher, replace the connecting hoses as well as the valve. In the meantime, any hoses that show signs of kinks, splits or leaks should be replaced.

3. Inspect the dishwasher interior.

Do the dishwasher racks roll in and out smoothly? You might be able to tighten or replace a faulty wheel. Also, if any of the coating on the racks has worn off, the racks could begin to rust. Take a good look at the dishwasher tank itself, and satisfy yourself that it is also in good condition.

4. Test the controls and give the dishwasher front a good once over.

As long as you’re doing periodic maintenance, test the dishwasher controls. You never know when you might want to use the quick wash, the china cycle, the sani-cyle, etc. Finally, run your hand along the door edges, examine the latch and hinges: lubricate if needed.

Depending on the dishwasher, an average life expectancy could be 10-12 years. Premium dishwashers might easily last for up to 15 years. And at least one of the very high end luxury (expensive) dishwashers is promoted as being built to last 20 years. Take good care of your dishwasher and it will take good care of you.

When it’s time to replace, have your contractor or remodeler contact Arizona Wholesale Supply to help you with a new dishwasher that meets your needs and your budget. Arizona Wholesale Supply carries all the major brands as well as a wide variety of specialty brands, and has been Arizona’s leading distributor since 1944. Family Owned and Operated.

Frigidaire/Electrolux At IBS/KBIS 2015

Design and Construction Week

What’s New at KBIS 2015? Look at Frigidaire and Electrolux

At this year’s Kitchen and Bath International Show (KBIS), Electrolux arguably had the largest exhibit, perhaps not in terms of appliances (it was sparsely populated), but certainly in terms of square footage. Their product lineup covered the entire range of Electrolux appliances from the mass brand Frigidaire all the way through the high-end European Luxury Brand Molteni.

Frigidaire Gallery New Double Oven Range

Frigidaire Double Oven Range

Frigidaire Gallery 30” Freestanding Electric Double Oven Symmetry™ Range

SYMMETRY™ DOUBLE OVENS

Two large equally-sized ovens provide the ultimate flexibility – you can cook two different dishes at different temperatures at the same time. Each oven is big enough to cook a 28-lb turkey.

LARGEST RANGE CAPACITY WITH SECOND OVEN

Cook a large meal effortlessly with our double oven range, offering the largest cooking capacity available so you can cook two meals, at different temperatures, at once.

SMUDGE-PROOF™ STAINLESS STEEL

Resists fingerprints and is easy to clean.

Electrolux New Slide In Range

Electrolux Slide-In Range

If you prefer a single oven range, and would like something a bit more upscale, the Electrolux Front-Controlled Range could work for you. Like other new slide-in range models, this Electrolux range can also be used in lieu of a freestanding model. So, you get the look and front controls of a slide-in range, with finished side, top, back trim, etc. that allow this to work for freestanding applications. This model will also have a gas version, and both models are loaded with deluxe features.

New Compact Washer Dryer

The new Electrolux compact washer and dryer combo proves that building a washer dryer pair to fit under a standard height counter and in a standard 24″ width can be done without sacrificing quality or even that much capacity. Electrolux has clearly transferred its technology and manufacturing saavy from Europe, where undercounter appliances are commonplace, to the U.S. market. But at 180 pounds each, don’t mistake these small appliances for the cheaply-built imports you might expect to find at the big box or home improvement stores. Not only is this pair right-sized for small spaces, the dryer has a water condenser tray and doesn’t require external venting.

IBS and KBIS 2015, Design and Construction Week

A Change is Gonna Come

2015 is going to be a year of great change and growth

A Change is Gonna Come is a famous song by Sam Cooke, and when it comes to appliances, flooring, and more, Arizona Wholesale Supply is definitely going to be singing about changing and growing in 2015.

Let’s start with the new products being shown during the 2015 Design and Construction Week in Las Vegas Jan 21-23. For the first time, five separate industry shows will all be exhibiting in Las Vegas at the same time. It’s going to be a BIG show!

Design and Construction Week

  • IBS – International Builders’ Show
  • KBIS – Kitchen and Bath Industry Show
  • Surfaces – The International Surface Event
  • International Window Coverings Expo
  • Las Vegas Market – home décor, furnishings, accessories, and gifts

Exhibitors will be showing their new products and designs at three separate venues in Las Vegas. So, there are going to be thousands of people moving to and from show locations. We’ll see manufacturers demonstrating new, innovative products, and we’re also sure to see more “connected” home products than ever before.

We’ll be able to operate smart appliances by smart phone or tablet. In turn, your appliances will also be able to communicate with you, warning you when a refrigerator door is left open, notifying your when your oven has finished pre-heating, or when it’s time to replace a refrigerator water filter. And that’s just the beginning.

Check this blog and our facebook and twitter pages often from Jan. 21 – Jan. 23, for live bulletins from Design and Construction Week.

The really big news in the appliance industry was actually announced in 2014 when Electrolux announced it was acquiring GE’s Appliance division. Now, in 2015 we’ll get to see some changes as Electrolux takes control of GE appliances, and along the way may become the largest appliance company in the World. More to come…for sure. As Sam Cooke wrote: A Change is Gonna Come.
