Buying Appliances to Save Energy

Making Sense out of Energy Savings Appliances

Question. Can I justify buying new appliances based on energy savings alone?

Answer. Maybe. If your current appliances are old energy hogs, you may be able to justify replacement for energy savings alone because the savings will pay for the replacement. This applies more to washers, dishwashers, and refrigerators than it does to ranges, ovens, cooktops, and dryers.

Here are three specific recommendations:

  1. Topload agitator-type washing machines are real culprits. In general, the older they are the more water they use, and the more water they use, the higher the energy costs, because of the cost to heat the water.

  2. Here's a quick way to find out if your dishwasher is an energy hog. If you have a porcelain tub dishwasher which has no filterbasket, it's very likely a big energy user. Energy saving dishwashers are likely to have stainless or polystyrene tubs and often use a wash system with a filter basket vs. a built-in food chopper.

  3. Does your refrigerator make a loud clunking sound when the compressor turns on? That's a good clue that this has a traditional compressor that runs a long time at high speed to provide cooling and then shuts down for a long period. Most refrigerators today have smaller more efficient compressors that do not cycle on and off but slow down and speed up based on cooling demand.

Another test you might use is age. If an appliance is over 15 years old, consider it suspect. If the appliance is working well, not service prone, and you just love it, then keep it. But, when you have the next service call on old Bessie, it's time to say goodby. The combined cost of repair and potential energy savings of a new appliance make a compelling case for replacement.

Cleaning Freestanding Clear Ice Machines

Clear Ice Machines

Tips and Advice for Taking Care of Your Ice Machine

Part 3

Ice machine

Freestanding Ice Machines that produce clear ice will require regular cleaning and maintenance. The basics are the same for most brands with the exception that some ice machines have automatic cleaning and will require less maintenance. Here are some considerations:

  1. Water filters. While using filtered water is not always necessary, it's a good idea. Some ice machines come equipped with their own filters that must be replaced regularly. If not, you can always install a standard inline water filter on the incoming water line. Replace the inline filter at least every 6 months.

  2. Cleaning the icemaker should be done every 3-6 months depending on usage and manufacturer recommendations. If the ice cube harvest drops or the ice cubes are cloudy, it's a good sign that your ice machine needs cleaning. Typically, ice machines with built-in cleaning cycles require less frequent cleaning. Here are the steps to follow when *cleaning ice machine:

a). Turn off and unplug the ice machine. Turn off the incoming water supply.

b). Remove all the ice from the ice compartment and wipe out the interior.

c). Remove all the ice machines parts that come into contact with water. Clean all the parts with nickel-free ice machine cleaner. Rinse off and let the parts fully dry.

d). Re-install all the parts and making sure that the ice machine is completely dry.

e). Turn on water, plug-in ice machine and turn on. Discard the first batch or two of ice.

*These are general instructions. By all means follow the directions that come with your specific ice machine. Take good care of your ice machine and you'll enjoy a regular supply of crystal clear ice for years to come.

Appliance Care When You Move

Selling your Home? Make Your Appliances Ready for the Buyer

Tips from Arizona Wholesale Supply

When selling a home, built-in appliances such as the range and dishwasher convey with the house since they're attached. However, the washer and dryer and freestanding refrigerator do not go with the deal unless they are specifically written into the agreement. These days though, it is very common for the buyer to request the refrigerator, washer, and dryer as part of the sale.

If you are selling your home, here are a few things you should do to make you appliances “buyer ready”.

1. Gather up your instruction manuals and, warranty cards, and put them in a binder for the buyer or leave them in a kitchen drawer.

2. Check for accessories and parts that go with the appliances and make sure that you leave them behind for the buyer. These include:

    • Oven temperature probe
    • All included oven racks
    • Broiler pan. Some manufacturers no longer include broiler pans with their ovens. If this was the case, and you purchased your broiler pan separately, you should take it with you because you may need it in your new home.
    • Refrigerator water filter plug. If your refrigerator has a water filter, there should be a plug that replaces the filter if no water filtration is desired. Leave this with the refrigerator.
    • Microwave oven racks and any included microwave cooking vessels.
    • Dryer rack.

3. Clean the dryer filter AND the dryer duct. Dryer ducts can fill up with lint and are a leading cause of home fires.

4. Clean the oven. This is often neglected. Check our videos below for tips on cleaning your oven.

5. If the buyer is not moving in immediately, leave an open box of baking soda in the refrigerator, and pour a half cup of white vinegar in the dishwasher sump.
