Appliances that are practical

Intuitive Innovation in Appliances

Major Appliances that Just Make Sense

There's a lot of talk these days about smart appliances. That usually refers to an appliance that can be connected and operated through bluetooth or wi-fi to an remote electronic device such as a smartphone. Most innovative appliances these days, are all about this connectivity. However, most of the great innovations in appliances over time had nothing to do with high-tech designs.

We often trace the history of modern appliances to the early 1950's when a deluge of convenient major appliances became popular in the post WWII expansion. Automatic washers and dryers replaced wringer-type washing machines and clothes hanging on a line. Frost-free refrigerators, self-cleaning ovens, and dishwashers all began to show up in our kitchens. These were all products that had demonstrable work-saving benefits, and the American public gobbled them up.

In the mid to late 90's, full-sized front loading washing machines took the country by storm. But there was also another appliance that caught the attention of many appliance buyers, The Double Oven Range.

I've always referred to this as the perfect example of “intuitive innovation”. Created by Maytag, and called the Gemini Range, the innovation was evident just by looking at it. In the space below a range's cooking surface, Maytag added a small oven/broiler, with a full-sized oven below the small oven.Viola, two ovens in a range that used to have only one oven and a storage drawer. The Gemini Range was a big success for Maytag, and was soon copied by all the competitors in this category.

Today, you can find double-oven ranges by these major brands: Frigidaire, GE, GE Café, GE Profile, Maytag, Samsung, Whirlpool, and KitchenAid. Of course, all are available at Arizona Wholesale Supply. Ask your builder or designer and call Arizona Wholesale Supply for an appointment today.

Appliance Exhibitors at IBS/KBIS

Visiting Appliance Manufacturers at IBS/KBIS

Are you heading to this week's (Jan.19-22, 2016) International Builder Show/Kitchen and Bath Show (IBS/KBIS), now known as Design and Construction Week (DCW)? If so, you may want to visit some key appliance vendors. Here's an up-to-date run down:

BSH

For the last few years BSH (Bosch, Thermador, Gaggenau) have had a good sized both in the Central Hall displaying their product lines, and have made some major product launches from there. The booth has been busy and crowded, but to their credit it has also been well-staffed by knowledgable sales associates.

Electrolux

Another manufacturer with quite a large booth, Electrolux, has been located in the North Hall, displaying their Frigidaire, Frigidaire Professional, Electrolux, and Icon product lines. This would be a good place to see and TOUCH their Smudge-Proof Stainless Steel appliances.

GE

General Electric Appliances, soon to be a part of Haier, has a modest, but sufficient booth near the entrance to the Central Hall.

Viking

Viking (Middleby) has had a busy booth in the North Hall, that has been a good place for me to meet up with friends and associates. There always seems to be something going on here. Middleby (Viking's owner) has been acquiring new brands recently. It will be interesting to see if they integrate these new products into the Viking booth.

Dacor

Dacor has been showing their appliances at IBS/KBIS in conjunction with other kitchen brands, eg. cabinets. Las year they had some activities going on off-site at the Las Vegas Mandarin Oriental.

Jenn-Air

Jenn-Air has not been formally displaying at IBS/KBIS for several years, but is a sponsor of the NKBA design competition, and has had product displayed in other exhibits with kitchen cabinets, etc.

Whirlpool

Whirlpool also has not been displaying at IBS/KBIS for several years, though they had a large display at this year's Consumer Electronics Show (CES). ??? However, It does appear that Whirlpool Appliances are featured in a show house built in the parking lot of IBS/KBIS.

Keep your eyes open and check the directories for other brands such as Asko, Bertazzoni, Elica, Miele, Scotsman, and Vent-A-Hood.

For more information on or appointments with these or other vendors at DCW contact your Arizona Wholesale Supply representative.

New GE Topload Agitator Washer

Industry's Largest Agitator Washer

New GE Washer is Largest Capacity Agitator Washer in Industry

GE-Topload-Washer

GTW460ASj

New machines offer water flexibility, intuitive controls for personal preference
GE Appliances revolutionizes laundry line with largest launch in over 20 years

For the last several years, all the talk in washing machines has been about front-load washers, or HE (high efficiency) top load washers with no agitators. However, we need to remember that a large percentage of U.S. industry sales is in the traditional agitator-type topload washers that we've been so accustomed to for decades.

GE has just completed their largest laundry launch in 20 years including a re-designed topload agitator washer line. The new product lineup features the largest topload agitator washer in the industry. Learn more below:

LOUISVILLE, Ky.—August 18, 2015— Whether it’s a favorite task or most loathed chore, in huge piles or small, sorted loads, we all prefer to do our laundry our own way. In the biggest revamp of its clothes care line in more than 20 years, GE Appliances has announced new washer and dryer offerings to fit every consumer preference.
Introducing new topload laundry pairs, GE has enhanced traditional agitator washers to give consumers more control over their cycles while improving energy efficiency, technology and machine aesthetics. With the largest agitator capacity on the market at 4.2 cu. ft, along with modified cycles and easy one-touch settings, laundry has never been more convenient. And with high-performance settings and specialty cycles to treat stains and remove wrinkles, consumers know even their dirtiest clothes are getting thoroughly clean, every time.
“The traditional topload washer remains the most popular style of washer in the U.S. today,” said Julie Muennich, director of marketing for laundry products. “Like racecar drivers want precision control of their cars, our research shows that consumers who prefer topload washers want that same command over their washers. The features of our new GE washers, such as Extra Rinse and Deep Fill, fit the bill in terms of flexibility and customization.”
Along with larger capacities that mean fewer loads, less time and hassle, the new GE Appliances washers offer water flexibility while maintaining energy efficiency standards. Users can choose Extra Rinse or Deep Fill options for particularly tough loads, or count on GE Appliances Precise Fill technology to fill with the right amount of water for typical washing. GE also boasts the largest and only ENERGY STAR®-rated agitator on the market, offering a unique combination of capacity and efficiency.

If you'd like to find out more about GE's new washers or other appliances, floor coverings, window treatments, water systems, and more for your new home, or remodeling project call your builder or design professional, and make plans to visit Arizona Wholesale Supply for the best selection and lowest prices.

Refrigerator Ice Makers and Water Dispensers

Choices Abound for New Dispenser Model Refrigerators

Dispenser-Model-Refer

One of the decisions you'll need to make when selecting a new refrigerator has to do with ice makers as well as ice and water dispensers. Many refrigerators these days come equipped with factory-installed icemakers. Refrigerator models without ice makers may even have connections for ice makers to be added later.

But there are a host of additional decisions to be made with respect to ice makers and water dispensers when choosing a new refrigerator. Let's start with the ice maker itself. Some models have their ice makers located in the door, conveniently freeing up storage space in the freezer…and inconveniently reducing the refrigerator door shelf storage. Other refrigerators free up that door space and put the ice maker in the freezer bin, thereby reducing freezer storage space. What is your preference?

There are even refrigerators that come with 2 ice makers for extra ice when you have parties. Do you often run out of ice? In researching this, I found that one manufacturer offers a spare ice container so that you could remove the ice container from the refrigerator to use as an ice bucket while the spare container allows you to keep making ice while you are using ice from the other container. Handy!

Then there are the dispenser issues. Do you prefer ice and water to be dispensed through an external dispenser, or do you like a refrigerator with doors free from the visual interruption of a bulky dispenser?

Internal-Dispenser

Internal Dispenser

Some people are worried about water leaking from the exterior dispenser and damaging their hardwood floor, and prefer refrigerators with internal dispensers. Others simply like the nice clean look of a refrigerator with no visible dispenser.

Many external ice makers allow you to flip a switch to dispense crushed ice vs. cubed. The choices seem infinite. GE® has a refrigerator that will dispense hot water as well as cold water, and even brew a cup of coffee from an accessory Keurig® attachment.

GE-Dispenser

Of course, the experts at Arizona Wholesale Supply will have all the details on the latest refrigerator designs.

Hi-Tech Appliances for Your Home #1

Wi-Fi Enabled Wall Ovens and Ranges

Interested in Hi-Tech remote control enabled appliances? Several appliance manufacturers have introduced remote controlled appliances that take advantage of 21st century computer technology to make your appliances “smart”. This might mean an appliance with a temperature probe that’s accessible remotely or even appliances that can be controlled remotely from miles away using wi-fi on either an iPhone or Android device. Here are three brands that have jumped into wireless enabled ranges and ovens within the last couple of years, GE, Dacor, and now Viking. Jenn-Air is getting ready to launch a wi-fi enabled oven, and others are sure to join.

GE Brillion

GE Brillion

GE Brillion is a wi-fi app that communicates with either iPhone or Android, and can be used to pre-heat your oven, get an alert when the food is ready, or adjust the temperature from your easy chair. GE was early to show a wi-fi enabled oven, and the Brillion app seems to be practical and designed to have wide appeal.

Here’s how GE describes this capability:

Turn your smart phone into a remote control for your WiFi Connect appliances! Get the GE Brillion app for your Android or iPhone, and you’ll be able to change appliance settings, keep an eye on your appliance status and cycles, and get maintenance alerts—all from your mobile device!

Dacor Discovery IQ

Discovery-IQ

Dacor’s Discovery™ Series Wall Oven and 48″ Range both come with a 7″ LCD glass touch screen panel. It’s a high-tech experience from the 1GHZ processor to stereo sound, and complete Wi-Fi connection capability through the built-in Discovery IQ Controller that enables users to research new recipes or view demonstrations throught their home Wi-Fi network. The oven will even text you when your food is cooked. Here’s how Dacor describes the Discovery™ IQ:

The IQ eliminates the guesswork associated with preparing popular dishes and family recipes by way of a pre-programmed guide. It enables users to prepare a wide range of dishes to perfection with the touch of a finger. Simply select the desired recipe from the display menu, insert the dish, initiate the program and relax as the oven takes care of the rest.

Viking

iDevice Accessory

iDevice

Viking has taken a different approach by offering an accessory from iDevice that has a meat thermometer connected to a separate digital temperature readout that can be accessed remotely by Bluetooth® via an Apple or Android device. The iDevice enables Bluetooth® monitoring from up to 200 feet away.

PCBC 2015

What is the PCBC?

PCBC

Launched in 1959 as a small educational conference at the Sheraton Palace Hotel in San Francisco, PCBC is now an annual two-day conference, product display and business exchange and is open to anyone professionally involved in the building industry, including builders, developers, architects, remodelers, designers, contractors, dealers/distributors and suppliers/manufacturers.

Keynote-Speech

In the past, PCBC was an acronym for “Pacific Coast Builders Conference”. Over time the name became an inaccurate reflection of the audience, as the show now draws attendees from all over the United States, Canada, Mexico and more than 25 other countries. Today the show is known simply as PCBC.

PCBC alternates each year between San Francisco and San Diego and has been endorsed as the official show of Leading Builders of America (LBA), whose membership includes 21 of the largest publicly and privately held homebuilders in the nation.

This year the PCBC is being held in San Diego on June 24th and June 25th. Many builders and designers from Arizona attend the PCBC, and many manufacturers of products distributed by Arizona Wholesale Supply will be exhibiting at the PCBC.

PCBC-Exhibit-Floor

PCBC Exhibit Floor

Among the exhibiters at PCBC, two exhibit prize winners winners came from the appliance category:

Viking Range, LLC: Viking Professional TurboChef Oven
Whirlpool Corporation: Whirlpool® HybridCareTM Heat Pump Dryer

Some of the manufacturers supplying Arizona Wholesale Supply that will be exhibiting at this year’s PCBC are:

  • ClosetMaid
  • DalTile
  • Electrolux
  • GE Appliances
  • Shaw Industries
  • Viking Group
  • Whirlpool

We’ll be attending and reporting back on what’s what and who’s who at this year’s PCBC. Look forward to seeing you there! Check back here often for updates on PCBC 2015.

IBS and KBIS 2015, Design and Construction Week

A Change is Gonna Come

2015 is going to be a year of great change and growth

A Change is Gonna Come is a famous song by Sam Cooke, and when it comes to appliances, flooring, and more, Arizona Wholesale Supply is definitely going to be singing about changing and growing in 2015.

Let’s start with the new products being shown during the 2015 Design and Construction Week in Las Vegas Jan 21-23. For the first time, five separate industry shows will all be exhibiting in Las Vegas at the same time. It’s going to be a BIG show!

Design and Construction Week

  • IBS – International Builders’ Show
  • KBIS – Kitchen and Bath Industry Show
  • Surfaces – The International Surface Event
  • International Window Coverings Expo
  • Las Vegas Market – home décor, furnishings, accessories, and gifts

Exhibitors will be showing their new products and designs at three separate venues in Las Vegas. So, there are going to be thousands of people moving to and from show locations. We’ll see manufacturers demonstrating new, innovative products, and we’re also sure to see more “connected” home products than ever before.

We’ll be able to operate smart appliances by smart phone or tablet. In turn, your appliances will also be able to communicate with you, warning you when a refrigerator door is left open, notifying your when your oven has finished pre-heating, or when it’s time to replace a refrigerator water filter. And that’s just the beginning.

Check this blog and our facebook and twitter pages often from Jan. 21 – Jan. 23, for live bulletins from Design and Construction Week.

The really big news in the appliance industry was actually announced in 2014 when Electrolux announced it was acquiring GE’s Appliance division. Now, in 2015 we’ll get to see some changes as Electrolux takes control of GE appliances, and along the way may become the largest appliance company in the World. More to come…for sure. As Sam Cooke wrote: A Change is Gonna Come.
