Tree Trimming Party

10761444_SYes, you can trim the tree yourself, but instead why not invite friends and family over for a holiday gathering? You’ll appreciate the extra help and they will appreciate a warm and festive party.

Determine how many people you want to invite. No need to stuff the house so full that no one can actually move around the tree.

Have the tree put up and the lights already on it. Let’s face it, no one wants to do that job and you’ll need the most help with ornaments, ribbon, garland and tinsel. Make sure you have gotten all your decorations out of storage and have them ready to go.

The experts say there are certain steps to decorating the tree.

  • First, put on the lights. You will need about 100 lights per every vertical foot.
  • Then add the garland. Start at the top of the tree and slowly increase the amount of garland between each wave as you work your way down the branches. Plan to use about two strands of garland for every vertical foot of tree. To avoid a busy look on your tree, use a variety of garlands from plain to fancy.
    • Thin, beaded garlands look best hung from branch to branch; thicker paper, ribbon, or foil garlands look best wrapped loosely around the entire tree.
  • Finally, put on the ornaments. To showcase your favorites, place them in prime positions on the tree first.
  • Next, hang your larger ornaments, spacing them evenly around the tree. Fill in around those ornaments with medium- and small-size ornaments. Be sure to hang some ornaments closer to the trunk to create depth and interest.

Make some easy appetizers to feed your guests while you start on the tree. Take a break halfway and eat dinner. Between dinner and dessert finish the tree.

This is the time to make do-it-ahead-of-time comfort food. Casseroles, spaghetti pie, or a crockpot roast are good options. Make a big salad and some garlic bread and you are ready to go. As for dessert, serve holiday cookies, a truffle or brownies.

Now your tree is up and looking beautiful and you have spent an enjoyable evening with your guests.
