Black Stainless Steel – Here to stay?

Why Black Stainless may be here to stay

Check out available Black Stainless Steel appliances at Arizona Wholesale

KitchenAid gets the nod for the early adopter that began promoting its Black Stainless Steel appliances, but it takes more than one brand to get a new appliance finish past the experimental stage (Anybody remember Jenn-Air Oiled Bronze appliances?)

But now, we've seen Whirlpool, Maytag, Samsung, and Dacor join KitchenAid in the Black Stainless Steel club. Word has it that Frigidaire is entering the Black Stainless Steel parade with it's full line, including entry level models. It looks like an appliance party to me.

Black Stainless Steel is fingerprint resistant and is made of a stainless steel treated with a chemical baked on at 1200 degrees F for several hours. It's neither painted nor is it part of the stainless steel itself. While it should be durable, it is nevertheless, something applied to a sheet of stainless steel.

Black Stainless Steel has been touted as a color/finish that can be mixed in with other appliances. There is, however, some concern that the Black Stainless Steel on KitchenAid does not match the finish on Samsung which has a shiny coating.

It's been a challenge for other colors and finishes to take the place of stainless steel. There are some interesting alternatives out there such as GE's Slate and a host of custom order bright appliance colors from luxury brands such as Bertazzoni, BlueStar, and others. Even with all the choices currently available, industry data shows that Stainless Steel is actually gaining in popularity against the others.

While industry veterans are by nature skeptical, Black Stainless Steel could be just the change that consumers have been wanting. Long Live Stainless Steel and Welcome Black Stainless Steel.

Appliances that are practical

Intuitive Innovation in Appliances

Major Appliances that Just Make Sense

There's a lot of talk these days about smart appliances. That usually refers to an appliance that can be connected and operated through bluetooth or wi-fi to an remote electronic device such as a smartphone. Most innovative appliances these days, are all about this connectivity. However, most of the great innovations in appliances over time had nothing to do with high-tech designs.

We often trace the history of modern appliances to the early 1950's when a deluge of convenient major appliances became popular in the post WWII expansion. Automatic washers and dryers replaced wringer-type washing machines and clothes hanging on a line. Frost-free refrigerators, self-cleaning ovens, and dishwashers all began to show up in our kitchens. These were all products that had demonstrable work-saving benefits, and the American public gobbled them up.

In the mid to late 90's, full-sized front loading washing machines took the country by storm. But there was also another appliance that caught the attention of many appliance buyers, The Double Oven Range.

I've always referred to this as the perfect example of “intuitive innovation”. Created by Maytag, and called the Gemini Range, the innovation was evident just by looking at it. In the space below a range's cooking surface, Maytag added a small oven/broiler, with a full-sized oven below the small oven.Viola, two ovens in a range that used to have only one oven and a storage drawer. The Gemini Range was a big success for Maytag, and was soon copied by all the competitors in this category.

Today, you can find double-oven ranges by these major brands: Frigidaire, GE, GE Café, GE Profile, Maytag, Samsung, Whirlpool, and KitchenAid. Of course, all are available at Arizona Wholesale Supply. Ask your builder or designer and call Arizona Wholesale Supply for an appointment today.

How Long do Appliances Last?

When Should I Replace My Appliances?

It's complicated

Many years ago, I used to carry around a chart from AHAM (Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers) which itemized the expected life spans of various appliances: washing machines 15 years, ranges 20 years, etc. I've long ago disposed of this, but I did find this current version. Here is a look at today's appliance lifespans from Consumer Reports:

Dishwasher – 9 years
Dryer (electric and gas) – 13 years
Microwave oven – 9 years
Range electric – 13 years
Range gas – 15 years
Refrigerator – 13 years
Washing machine – 10 years

We all know that the life expectancy of appliances is not what it used to be, but let's not confuse quality with durability. Today's washing machines use less detergent, energy and water than their predecessors. They are more gentle on clothes, and get them cleaner than ever before, but have a life expectancy of only 10 years, compared to 15 years or longer from grandma's Maytag.

Today, manufacturers seem to be on a never ending quest to reduce costs, and as consumers we shop until we drop to get save every hard earned dollar we can on appliances. Moreover, we don't seem to care if our kids inherit the family refrigerator, and we are quick to get rid of a broken appliance to avoid paying a stiff repair bill.

I recently read that in upscale neighborhoods it is not uncommon for kitchens to be remodeled about every 10 years, and that includes new appliances. So, even though appliances don't last as long as they used to, we tend not to even keep them for as long as they last.

The truth is that we don't expect our appliances to last as long as they used to…but we do expect that they have the latest features and look great in our house. I once asked a customer if she had a brand preference for her new washer. She replied that it didn't make a difference as long as the washer was red.

So, don't feel guilty about replacing your 15 year old agitator style topload washing machine with a shiny new front loader. The old machine is at the end of it's life, and the new one could actually pay for itself in energy savings….plus, it's red!

To get more information on appliances, floor coverings, and more be sure to consult your design professional or builder, and make an appointment with the experts at Arizona Wholesale Supply.

Laundry Room Remodeling

Laundry Room Advice from Houzz

New Washers and Dryers from Arizona Wholesale

Modern laundry rooms are no longer after thoughts. Today's laundry rooms are designe for both function and aesthetics. Not just an anteroom from the garage to the living space, modern laundry rooms are workspaces for getting clothes clean and sometimes much more. Here are 5 questions posed by Mitchell Parker in his Houzz article:

Homeowner's Workbook: How to Remodel the Laundry Room

  1. What are you hoping to achieve?
  2. How do you want the space to function?
  3. How do you do your laundry?
  4. What kind of appliances do you want?
  5. Special features?

Of course, we're focusing here on #4 – The Washer and Dryer. Choices include:

Front-Load-Pair

Electrolux Front Load Pair

  1. Front load washers and matching dryers. Full-sized front load washers were launched in the mid-nineties by Maytag and Whirlpool and over the years have become very popular even though they are a pricey alternative to the traditional top loaders of the past. These units may have optional pedestal bases, and may even be configured so that the dryer is stacked on top of the washer.
  2. High efficiency Top Load washers and matching dryers. HE top loaders are for customers who want to load and unload their wash loads from the top, but also want the efficiency and water conservation of the tumble action front load machines.
  3. Traditional Top Load washers and matching dryers. Traditional top load washers have the high-post agitator in the center. While “old school”, some consumers still prefer them, and newer models are available with energy saving features.
  4. Combination washer and dryer. Combination units can be a single front load washer that can also double as a dryer, or a washer with a connected dryer on top configured and sold as a single unit.

Of course, for help choosing what's right for you consult your designer or home builder, and then hurry over to Arizona Wholesale Supply to get the best selection and pricing on washers, dryers, other major appliances, and much more.

Spring Cleaning Your Dishwasher

4 Tips for Cleaning and Maintaining your Dishwasher

1. Clean the dishwasher filter

Some dishwashers have built-in food disposers, i.e. choppers (above) while others have filters that collect larger food particles. Periodically, the filters need to be removed and cleaned. Read the operating instructions of your dishwasher to determine how often your dishwasher filter needs cleaning. We clean ours about once a month.

2. Check for water leaks and bad seals.

It’s a good idea to examine and clean the gasket that seals the dishwasher door with the liner. Eventually, this seal could develop tears, gaps, or cracks. Replace when necessary (service call). Also, take a look at the water inlet connection and hose, as well as the drain hose. If your house is older, the water inlet valve might show some corrosion. Be aware, that this could become a problem, so keep an eye on it. When you eventually replace the dishwasher, replace the connecting hoses as well as the valve. In the meantime, any hoses that show signs of kinks, splits or leaks should be replaced.

3. Inspect the dishwasher interior.

Do the dishwasher racks roll in and out smoothly? You might be able to tighten or replace a faulty wheel. Also, if any of the coating on the racks has worn off, the racks could begin to rust. Take a good look at the dishwasher tank itself, and satisfy yourself that it is also in good condition.

4. Test the controls and give the dishwasher front a good once over.

As long as you’re doing periodic maintenance, test the dishwasher controls. You never know when you might want to use the quick wash, the china cycle, the sani-cyle, etc. Finally, run your hand along the door edges, examine the latch and hinges: lubricate if needed.

Depending on the dishwasher, an average life expectancy could be 10-12 years. Premium dishwashers might easily last for up to 15 years. And at least one of the very high end luxury (expensive) dishwashers is promoted as being built to last 20 years. Take good care of your dishwasher and it will take good care of you.

When it’s time to replace, have your contractor or remodeler contact Arizona Wholesale Supply to help you with a new dishwasher that meets your needs and your budget. Arizona Wholesale Supply carries all the major brands as well as a wide variety of specialty brands, and has been Arizona’s leading distributor since 1944. Family Owned and Operated.

Appliances Guaranteed to Fit

Appliance Brands Compete on their “Fitness”

Check out these appliances guaranteed to fit

Jenn-Air-Slide-In-Range

One of the trends in new appliances during the last few years has been new appliances that are designed to fit a variety of existing cabinet and cutouts and configurations. In fact, some appliance manufacturers have offered a “guarentee” on given wall ovens, ranges, and even vent hoods, that if their appliance does NOT fit, they'll pay up to a specified amount to have the cabinet reconfigured so that the appliance WILL fit. Whirlpool and its family of brands (Maytag, KitchenAid, and Jenn-Air) offers various FIT guarantees depending on models.

Whirlpool-Oven

Of course there is a dollar limitation, and the usual fine print, but the point is that big brands are working hard to make appliances fit in more existing installations, either with more installation friendly designs and dimensions, or with installation blocks and trims that help make appliances fit better.

For example, new ranges are now made to be installed either as a freestanding range or a slide-in range by manufacturing with side panels (not previously typical on slide-ins), eliminating the overlapping cooking surface, and most importantly, by including front controls which also eliminates the need for a backsplash. Wall ovens come with adjustable legs, and trim options to make them fit seamlessly in a variety of cutouts.

The value of having a “go anywhere” appliance is that adding new appliances to an existing kitchen can now be done in more instances than before without being required to replace cabinets or countertops.

The idea of the FIT guarantee is to cover minor expenses of installs into pre-existing cabinet cutouts that need to be adapted beyond the capabilities and flexibility provided by the FIT system. For specifics of the guarantee check the manufacturer website or call or visit the experts at Arizona Wholesale Supply.
