Pros and Cons: Range vs. Cooktop/Oven

Freestanding Range vs Cooktop and Oven

Kitchen Debate: Purchase a Range or a Cooktop and Oven

When building a home or re-designing a kitchen, homeowners can be faced with the choice of installing a single kitchen range vs. a cooktop and a separate wall oven. Here are a few considerations:

Advantages and disadvantages of a kitchen range

Freestanding-Range

This is a simple decision. Choose the range and you've purchased two appliances at once. No worries about locating two separate appliances, choosing among various dimensions eg, 30″ vs 36″, or running gas and/or electric lines to separate locations.

On the other hand, you'll be locking yourself into 2 separate appliances in a single space which may be inconvenient. You could find yourself needing to cook on the range surface while standing in front of a hot oven. Some people find that repeatedly bending over to access the oven is uncomfortable.

Advantages and disadvantages of a separate cooktop and oven

One big advantage is that by purchasing the cooktop and oven separately, you can get exactly the features you want in each appliance. Also, separate appliance purchases may sometimes result in different brands sizes and fuel types of cooktops and ovens. By having a wall oven installed at eye level, it can be operated and accessed without bending over.

Oven-Cooktop

In most instances, separate cooktops and wall ovens will cost more than a comparable freestanding range. Having remodeled kitchens in two different homes in the last 5 years, we've chosen both configurations. We love our current double oven range with radiant top. However, the separate gas cooking surface and combination wall oven/microwave probably edges out the freestanding range. Viva la difference!

For the best advice on appliance locations and options work with your builder and designer, and of course make sure to schedule an appointment with an appliance professional at Arizona Wholesale Supply for the best choices.

Gifts for your Appliances

Holiday Appliance Tips for the New Year

So you think that you have all your holiday shopping done? Think again. You must buy some Christmas presents for your appliances. The appliance guru insists!

Refrigerator – I replace my water filter once a year (unless it needs to be done sooner. see blog link below.)

Replacing Refrigerator Water Filters

The end of year works out good for me so that I don't forget it. Just add it to your shopping list. While your at it, you may have other filters in your refrigerator that you want to replace also. Look for an air filter in the refrigerator compartment, and a charcoal filter in one or more of the crispers.

Refrigerator Water Filter

Oven – You're not going to want to hear this, but after the company has left and before the Super Bowl, you might want to look at your oven interior. Time to clean the oven? **Merry Christmas Oven**

Dishwasher – How often do you clean the filter in the sump of your dishwasher?…Shame on you – you've been naughty. While it should be cleaned regularly, Santa will forgive you if you take about 2 minutes to remove this filter, clean it, and rinse it out.

Washer – The one thing I'd recommend that you do for your washing machine is to examine the hoses. Make sure the connections aren't corroded and that the hoses aren't split or cracked. Replace if necessary.

Dryer – I know that you clean your dryer filter regularly :-), but did you know that lint build up in the dryer vent is the number one cause of house fires. If the vent has never been examined take a look, and pull out any accumulation of lint in the vent line with a coat hanger or even a vacuum. If the vent line is long and has elbows, you may need to get professional help.

These are just a few tips to help your appliances as they head into the New Year – ready to give you another great year of service.

New SMEG Appliances at Arizona Wholesale

What's New at Arizona Wholesale Supply?

SMEG Appliances from Italy

A few years ago Fiat automobiles were relaunched in the U.S. with some very clever TV commercials announcing “The Italians are coming.” Well, they sure are, but their invasion has not been limited to automobiles. Italian appliances have also made their mark in the U.S. over the past few years. Among the latest, is the Italian brand SMEG. It's now available in Arizona at Arizona Wholesale Supply.

How To Use Hydrogen Peroxide as Part of Your Cooking Routine

Grandma’s age old remedy for seemingly everything still works wonders in your busy kitchen. Store a bottle of hydrogen peroxide in the kitchen and use it for tricks such as these while you’re in chef mode!

Clean a cookie sheet with no elbow grease

Cookie sheets are hard to part with if you’re a woman who cooks with soul. So many treats baked over the years for special occasions and family time – it’s as if it holds memories. However, it is one tough cookie when it comes to cleaning! This trick will save you considerable effort. First, sprinkle baking soda over entire sheet. Then, spray or sprinkle hydrogen peroxide over baking soda. Next, sprinkle an additional layer of baking soda. Let sit for at least two hours – time is the substitute for vigorous scrubbing. When you resume your work the majority of the residue and stains will now rinse of easily quite easily! A little bit of wiping and rinsing will finish the job with ease.

Sanitize food prep and storage surfaces

Use H2O2 to kill bacteria on cutting boards and refrigerator/freezer shelves. It will sanitize them so they are germ free. Hydrogen peroxide is non-toxic so it’s a great natural alternative to store-bought cleaners that are full of strong chemicals. Spray H2O2 on the surface and let it sit a couple of minutes. Then, wipe and rinse clean. If there’s gunk or food remnants, scrub first with a brush or clean rag. Bonus use: try it on your lunch bags and containers. Make sure to check the manufacturer’s instructions before using this on appliances!

Preserve a salad

Yes, it is actually possible to delay wilting and preserve the freshness of a salad for a little longer than you’d expect. Mix ½ cup water with 1 tbsp hydrogen peroxide and spray evenly over salad. (This is for fresh salad that hasn’t yet been tossed in dressing or oil.) After spraying thoroughly, rinse with a light touch so you don’t bruise the food, cover it, and keep it in the refrigerator. Waste not, want not!

Clean fruits and vegetables before consuming

H2O2 is a natural way to remove dirt, germs and pesticides from fruits and vegetables. Just add ¼ cup to a sink full of water. Gently rub foods clean and rinse thoroughly. Interesting trivia:  Did you know that fruits and vegetables actually produce H2O2 and this is part of the reason why they are so good for you? Yep, they do!

Oven Cleaning Methods

New Appliances Offer More Cleaning Options

Over the years, we've seen a variety of methods for getting ovens clean. Starting with the elbow grease method along with the home remedies that always seem to involve vinegar and/or baking soda, and on to the continuous-clean (never clean) ovens, and of course the self-clean method that has become so popular for some time now.

But now we're seeing some new cleaning methods such as Steam-Clean, as well as Aqualift, an oven cleaning technology developed by Whirlpool. Here is a brief description of these new methods:

Steam-Clean Ovens

Steam-Clean

Some range and oven manufacturers have added a steam-clean option to some of their products. Essentially, this method involves pouring a cup of water into the oven bottom, and selecting the oven's steam clean setting which lasts about 30 minutes. During the cleaning, the steam should loosen minor food spills. Afterwords, the oven needs to be wiped out to remove the water and softened grime. Using this method, the temperature is much lower than self-clean, there are no chemicals or cleaning agents involved, and it takes only 30 minutes. Evidently, steam-cleaning is not a “total” solution since these ovens still have a self-clean cycle for heavily soiled ovens.

Aqualift Ovens

Aqualift

Aqualift is an oven cleaning technology developed by Whirlpool. The oven bottom has a special coating that activates with water and heat. Using two cups of water and a low temperature cleaning cycle, the coating acts to release (lift) soil from underneath so that the water and soil can be easily wiped-up. It's worth noting that LG has now introduced their version of this which they've dubbed EasyClean™.

Click on the links below to view a brief video on each of these technologies:

New Options to Get Ovens Clean

Trends in Oven Cleaning

The Old Way

Years ago, all ranges and wall-ovens had to be cleaned by hand, which meant lots of tedious scrubbing. Over time, three oven cleaning systems evolved:

  1. Commercial oven cleaners.
  2. Continuous cleaning ovens.
  3. Self-cleaning ovens.

Commercial oven cleaners which can still be found on your ovens shelves are highly caustic – get out the rubber gloves, and produce toxic fumes. If you have a self-cleaning or continuous cleaning oven, the manufacturer's operating instructions will provide a strong warning against using commercial oven cleaners.

Continuous clean ovens are ovens have a rough, porous, ceramic coating that will, over time, absorb and spread minor spills so that they are less noticeable. They work continuously (hence the name), and do not require any work from the homeowner. Any attempt to clean this surface with chemicals and/or abraisive pads or cloth, may cause the coating to peel away.

Self-clean ovens have a CLEAN selection on the oven controls. This requires locking the oven with a latch on the oven door, and putting the oven into the self-clean mode for several hours while the oven becomes super heated up to 900 or more degrees, thus burning off any stains or debris in the oven cavity. Of course, everything (*including the racks) must be removed from the oven before cleaning.

New Oven Cleaning Trends

Whirlpool-Oven

Whirlpool Steam Clean Oven

Now, there are some new cleaning methods that have been developed recently, and are gradually being rolled out by appliance manufacturers as new range and oven products are being introduced. Whirlpool has developed a cleaning system for ovens called Aqualift®. The oven bottom has a special porous coating that with a cup of water and a low heat setting will loosen soils on the oven floor so that they may be wiped off. Other cleaning systems becoming available are steam cleaning methods which rely on the power of heat and steam to remove baked on food from all oven surfaces.

We've written about oven cleaning before, but we'll be updating some of the newer oven cleaning methods in some upcoming blogs so check back often.
