Appliances that are practical

Intuitive Innovation in Appliances

Major Appliances that Just Make Sense

There's a lot of talk these days about smart appliances. That usually refers to an appliance that can be connected and operated through bluetooth or wi-fi to an remote electronic device such as a smartphone. Most innovative appliances these days, are all about this connectivity. However, most of the great innovations in appliances over time had nothing to do with high-tech designs.

We often trace the history of modern appliances to the early 1950's when a deluge of convenient major appliances became popular in the post WWII expansion. Automatic washers and dryers replaced wringer-type washing machines and clothes hanging on a line. Frost-free refrigerators, self-cleaning ovens, and dishwashers all began to show up in our kitchens. These were all products that had demonstrable work-saving benefits, and the American public gobbled them up.

In the mid to late 90's, full-sized front loading washing machines took the country by storm. But there was also another appliance that caught the attention of many appliance buyers, The Double Oven Range.

I've always referred to this as the perfect example of “intuitive innovation”. Created by Maytag, and called the Gemini Range, the innovation was evident just by looking at it. In the space below a range's cooking surface, Maytag added a small oven/broiler, with a full-sized oven below the small oven.Viola, two ovens in a range that used to have only one oven and a storage drawer. The Gemini Range was a big success for Maytag, and was soon copied by all the competitors in this category.

Today, you can find double-oven ranges by these major brands: Frigidaire, GE, GE Café, GE Profile, Maytag, Samsung, Whirlpool, and KitchenAid. Of course, all are available at Arizona Wholesale Supply. Ask your builder or designer and call Arizona Wholesale Supply for an appointment today.

2016 Kitchen and Bath + Builder Show Jan 19-21

New Products Coming Soon to Builder Show and KBIS 2016

The combined IBS/KBIS (International Builder Show/Kitchen & Bath Industry Show) dubbed DCW (Design & Construction Week) enters its 3rd year in 2016 in Las Vegas from January 19th through January 21st. Joining the 2016 DCW event in Las Vegas are the International Window Coverings Expo (IWCE) and the International Surface Event (TISE). It's a HUGE show!

When it comes to appliances, we can expect to see a continued focus on smart appliances, more import cooking brands (think Italy), and some added appliance finishes and colors.

Smart Appliances

We've been given just a few hints that more manufacturers will expand the use of technology to connect appliances to smartphones, home networks, and etc. The big question is convincing consumers to spend more for new features that they may still view as gimmicky.

New Brands

Unlike the U.S. appliance industry which is dominated by a few big brands, Europe has a wealth of brand names. In particular, there appears to be a host of Italian factories making cooking products that have been around for decades, now seeking to export their products to the U.S.

New Colors and Finishes

There has been a renaissance of pastel colors in appliances from the 50's and 60's. Buyers are showing an increased willingness to add these striking, colorful appliances in retro designs to their kitchens. Expect to see bold colors in more brands, and a continued interest in “old style” appliances. In addition, you owe it to yourself to take a look at the new black stainless steel. Photos don't really help. It's stainless steel with the stainless grain or “brush”, and it's black not shiny silver.

If you're not attending DCW this year, the event is moving to Orlando for 2017 and 2018 and returning to Las Vegas in 2019.

More Smart Appliances for your Home

New Jenn-Air Wall Ovens

In 2009, as Jenn-Air was transitioning from a mass premium brand to a super-premium brand, they introduced a new game-changing wall oven. Now, Jenn-Air is preparing to update their state-of-the-art 2009 oven with their new “connected” wall oven. While “connected” or “smart” are the appliance buzzwords for 2015, there’s much more to tout on Jenn-Air’s new oven than it’s remote wi-fi operation. But we’ll save that for a future blog and focus on just how smart this new oven really is.

Jenn-Air Oven Controls

Jenn-Air has had touch screens for a long time, and their exisiting oven features Jenn-Air’s exclusive menu with a full-color display, enabling users to select the desired doneness of their roast by the interior color of the meat. Jenn-Air’s new (and much larger) oven keeps that full-color display, improves upon it, and adds remote operability. This means that the new oven can be controlled from your Android or Apple IOS device as well as from the oven’s home screen.

Your app equipped smart phone will allow you to remotely preheat the oven and control its operation from beginning to end. Using the wired temperature probe of the oven, the oven can communicate the food’s internal temperature to your remote device. And there’s much more waiting for you in the way of interoperability.

Jenn-Air makes this oven available in three configurations:

  • Euro-Style stainless steel with sleek modern handles (below).
  • Pro-Style with more of a restaurant, commercial look.
  • Black Floating Glass with black glass fronts.
Jenn-Air Double Oven

The oven line includes a single wall oven, a double oven (above), and a combo version with oven on the bottom and microwave on the top.

The new Jenn-Air ovens are scheduled to hit the market in September. Check with your account manager or design consultant for updates and more details.
