Appliance Colors over a lifetime

Are Old Appliance Colors becoming New Again?

New Appliances in Pink and Turquoise Rivaled by Black Stainless Steel

Turquoise Appliances

Northstar Appliances

Modern major appliances are dated as beginning in the Post WWII era. White appliances were standard, but during the 50's and on into the 60's our kitchens were brightened up with Pink and Turquoise appliances. Recently, some specialty brands such as Northstar and Smeg have re-introduced these colors to add the brightness back into our kitchens along with a retro look (Northstar Appliances above in a K. Hovnanian Model home – Phoenix Area 2015).

Later in the 60's, Harvest Gold, Avocado, and Coppertone became the popular appliance colors. A unique characteristic of these colors was a darker shading around the edges of the appliance. Many years later in an effort to refresh these colors the shading was removed. For example, Harvest Gold became Harvest Wheat and the color had a lighter, cooler look. Almond was added to the mix and the beige finish quickly became a hit.

Colors aren't always successful, however. Back in the mid 80's both GE and Whirlpool came out with a couple of new colors – Silver and Sand color (gray and a little darker beige than Almond) from GE and similar Platinum and Toast shades from Whirlpool. Unfortunately, the shades from each manufacturer were similar, but did not match. Consumers chose to stick with their White and Almond appliances. Toast and Sand and Silver and Platinum were quickly dropped.

It's worth noting that during the run up of Harvest Gold and Avocado, a trend toward larger windows on ranges and ovens eventually led to the painted fronts and small windows on many appliances becoming black glass finishes across the front with chrome trim on the edges.

Black-Stainless-Steel

In the late '80s, Fred Carl introduced the Viking Range, a range with a commercial look that was designed for the home. By the mid-90's, the trend toward Pro-Style ranges and ovens in luxury homes was well on its way. Today, stainless steel appliances are offered (at a premium) even in starter homes.

Now, KitchenAid has introduced Black Stainless Steel. It's hard to see in the photo, but the appliances have the texture and grain of stainless steel, and the color is black. If you want to see it in person, plan a visit to one of the Arizona Wholesale Supply locations below.

Bertazzoni Appliances at KBIS 2015

Up and Coming Italian Brand Wows at KBIS

New Products, New Features, Bright Colors

After more than a couple decades of attending appliance trade shows, I'm used to yawning my way through exhibits, hoping in vain to see something exciting, noteworthy, and different. However, this year's Design and Construction Week (KBIS/IBS) was a bit different. Several appliance manufacturers are out to make a statement.

Their statement is:

WE'RE SPECIAL! LOOK AT US!!

Bertazzoni was at KBIS 2015 in a big way. Their bold *colors make them hard to miss. The professional range lineup is available in 7 different colors including the Ferrari red below:

Don't want to jump out on a limb with a bold range color? If, like most appliance customers you're wedded to stainless steel, not to worry. The striking colors are options, and Bertazzoni offers a full selection of stainless steel ranges, cooktops, ovens, and more. Here are just a couple of the stand outs from Bertazzoni at KBIS 2015.

Warming drawer

How can a warming drawer be special? How about a warming drawer that closes like other high end kitchen cabinet drawers, with soft touch technology? Bertazzoni has it.

Induction ranges and cooktops

Bertazzoni just announced that they are launching their new induction range and cooktop line in the U.S. market. The selection features a Professional Series 30″ Induction Range (available in stainless steel as well as six colors), a Master Series 30″ Induction Range and two touch control Induction cooktops. Bertazzoni touts this as the largest selection of induction cooking appliances in North America.

Bertazzoni Cooktop

Of course, Bertazzoni showed their full line of cooktops including the award-winning (Best of Show KBIS 2012) segmented gas/griddle/induction cooktop. This innovative 36″ cooktop combines the power of gas heat, with an even-cooking electric griddle, and induction electric smoothtop cooking.

On hand to greet visitors and help answer questions about their products were members of the Bertazzoni family. The Bertazzoni brand is a six generation family-owned enterprise, based in Northern Italy.

New Home Builder Appliance Options and Upgrades

New Home Buyer Appliance Options and Upgrades

Logical Steps to Better Appliances

Buying a new home? Get ready to make a lot of decisions. Whether it's a corner lot, stainless steel appliances or taller cabinets; home buyers are faced with a seemingly endless array of choices and charges. Yet, at the same time, options can seem limited as home buyers find that the builder cannot always handle unique requests.

Consider a new home buyer's basic appliance choices.

1. Builder standard appliance package:

  • Self-cleaning freestanding range
  • Microwave-hood combination
  • Dishwasher

2. Builder upgrade to stainless steel appliances.

Stainless Appliance Packge

Stainless Appliance Package

3. Builder second upgrade to deluxe appliances:

  • Smoothtop self-clean range with convection
  • Deluxe super quiet dishwasher
  • Microwave hood with added features

It's a simple good, better, best upgrade choice with the option to also add:

  • Refrigerator
  • Washing machine and matching dryer.

And all this can be included on your mortgage. However, suppose you want appliances that the builder doesn't offer. Perhaps you want built-in instead of freestanding appliances. You may find the builder just cannot accommodate such requests. Such changes would require that the kitchen be reconfigured. Cabinets, countertops, plumbing, and electrical changes would need to be made.

Builders predetermine all the materials and selection choices for the home, creating a standardized repeatable production process (even for options) so that homes can be completed on budget and on time. They really do want to offer choices that will make new home buyers happy. The option and upgrade selection process is designed to do just that.

As Arizona's leading appliance distributor Arizona Wholesale Supply consults with home builders to help them select the most desirable and popular appliance choices for their appliance standards and option upgrade packages. Then Arizona Wholesale Supply design consultants help home buyers through the process of choosing from the various builder options and upgrades. At Arizona Wholesale Supply the objective is to have both a happy home buyer AND a happy home builder.

The Basic Kitchen Appliance Package

Refrigerator, Range, Hood, and Dishwasher

Kitchen Package

White Ice Collection

Standard Four Piece Kitchen Package

This is the common appliance configuration for most kitchens across America. It seems simple doesn't it? Cooling (1.refrigerator), cooking (2. range, and 3. hood), and cleaning (4. dishwasher). Yet, within those product categories there are millions of appliances sold each year in a variety of brands, styles, finishes, and colors so that the choices seem infinite.

French Door Refrigerator

French Door Refrigerator

For example, freestanding refrigerators (excluding built-in and undercounter variations) can be loosely classified into top mount, bottom mount (including French door), and side-by-side. Seems simple enough. But some refrigerators are cabinet depth and fit somewhat snugly in the surrounding cabinets, while full depth refrigerators will stick out from the cabinets a good six inches or more. Also, you need to consider whether you want an icemaker in your refrigerator. If so, do you want a model with an ice and water dispenser?

The Stainless Steel Decision

Stainless Steel

A major decision will revolve around what type of finish you want on your appliances. Stainless steel is popular, but even in stainless steel there are options. Some manufacturers have “faux” stainless steel, while others have stainless steel that is coated to make it smudge-proof. If you wish to change up from stainless steel, major appliance manufacturers are back to touting white and black, perhaps with stainless trim such as the white or black “ice” collection from Whirlpool.

If you can't make up your mind among the variety of colors and finishes, you may consider no finish at all by purchasing panel ready models. This choice entails putting cabinet panels on your refrigerator and dishwasher to make them blend in with the surrounding cabinets.

Chimney Hood

Chimney Hood

When it comes to the vent hood, it should be very simple right? WRONG. You must choose among a standard hood, a designer model such as a chimney hood, or a microwave hood combination. Even among these three hood categories there are hoods that are ducted outside, or those that recirculate.

Does all of this begin to sound overwhelming? Well, help IS available. The professionals at Arizona Wholesale Supply deal with these issues on a daily basis. Call the location nearest you to schedule an appointment for help in selecting the appliances for your new kitchen.

Cleaning Stainless Steel Appliances Part 2

Dealing with Hard to Clean Stainless Steel Appliances

Last month we posted a video on doing the light cleaning of stainless steel appliances. This was a tutorial on using household cleaner to keep your appliances shiny.

Cleaning Stainless Steel Appliances Part 1

Now, we want to give you some ideas on how to clean really dirty stainless steel appliances. For this test, we chose our own outdoor grill. This stainless barbecue grill is thirteen years old, has sat out on a covered patio in Arizona for the entire time, exposed to weather, wind, dirt, dust storms, and infrequent rain. It gets used at least once or twice a week throughout most of the year, and frankly it's been a couple of years since it got a really good cleaning.

One of the great attributes of stainless steel is that it is extraordinary durable. Watch the video below and you'll see a really nasty looking grill transformed.

Coming soon will be a video on removing scratches from stainless steel. You won't want to miss it.

For all your appliance, floor covering, and window treatment needs be sure to consult the professionals at Arizona Wholesale Supply.

Cleaning Stainless Steel Appliances

Tips for Cleaning Stainless Steel Kitchen Appliances

Easily the biggest concern about buying stainless steel appliances is keeping them clean. Stainless steel is a durable finish that will last a lifetime, but it shows fingerprints and easily smudges. The good news is that it's easy to clean if you use the right product and apply it properly.

Arizona Wholesale Supply has produced a series of YouTube videos providing guidance on appliance selection, use, and care:

Arizona Wholesale Supply YouTube Channel.

Here is the latest video from Arizona Wholesale Supply showing what cleaner to use to clean your stainless steel appliances and how to apply it properly.

We'll follow this up with another Arizona Wholesale Supply video on the more challenging cleaning of stainless appliances that have had some really tough usage like an outdoor grill.

P.S. Nearly all of the stainless steel used by appliance manufacturers today is stainless steel with a #4 brush finish. However, we've seen smudge-proof stainless being promoted. If you have an appliance that has some type of coating or treatment to the stainless steel be sure to follow the manufacturer instructions for cleaning.

For all your appliance, floor covering, and window treatment needs be sure to consult the professionals at Arizona Wholesale Supply.

Grey in the Kitchen

Grey is quickly becoming the most popular neutral color in design.  There is a wide range of grey hues and greys that can be found with both cool and warm undertones.  Working as both a warm and cool neutral makes grey incredibly versatile as a color for home design.

We’re seeing more grey in kitchen design. Stainless steel appliances first introduced grey into the kitchen and their popularity only seems to be growing.  Using stainless steel appliances as a jumping off point, greys and silver dominate the kitchen hardware and fixtures as well. It was only a matter of time before we saw more grey throughout the kitchen.

Grey veined white marble counter tops can add a touch of grey to an otherwise white kitchen that has white cabinets and white floor.  Blue slate, which has a deep charcoal color tinged with blue, is another natural stone that can add grey to kitchen floors.

Grey painted cabinets paired with either dark or light counters feel warmer than white and less dramatic than black. As seen in this kitchen, you can pair grey lower cabinets with white upper cabinets or even white shelves.  Grey tiles on the floor with white grout carry the grey and white palette onto the floor.

Paired with stainless steel appliances and chrome or stainless faucets, grey cabinets, counters, floors and walls can create a sophisticated monochrome color palette for the kitchen. Grey works with so many colors it is easy to add pops of color if you want to bring color into the kitchen too.
