Column Refrigeration

New Appliance Trends at Arizona Wholesale

Column Refrigerators, Freezers, and Wine Storage

What's a column refrigerator? Columns generally refer to refrigerator, freezer, and wine storage units that can be integrated into standard 24″ deep surrounding cabinets, i.e. fully flush with no hinges or grillwork showing. They are sometimes described as disappearing refrigerators because when installed with matching cabinet panels they cannot be distinguished from surrounding cabinets.

Disappearing-Refrigerator

Columns were first introduced in the U.S. by Miele and Thermador for use in high-end kitchens with sleek European kitchen cabinets. A few years ago Sub Zero launched a complete line of column refrigerators, freezers, and wine storage units.

Today, most of the major full line premium appliance brands offer columns in their lineup. With the flexibility that columns offer, they have appeal in many applications, and locations. Refrigerator and freezer columns can be installed together to create a side-by-side unit. Because these units are different *widths 18″, 24″, 27″, 30″ and 36″ you can customize by matching different width freezer and refrigerator columns. For example, if you don't need a lot of freezer space, it might make sense to install an 18″ wide freezer next to a 30″ wide refrigerator column.

Dacor recently launched its new Modernist appliance collection in Black Stainless Steel. The lineup includes new column refrigerators and freezers. The refrigerator can take a photo of your contents when you open it and email the photo to you so you can check its contents when you are shopping.

Dacor Columns

One of my personal favorites is Sub Zero's unusual configuration of a combination refrigerator over freezer unit below. It comes in both a 30″ and 36″ version:

Choosing a Built-In Refrigerator

Built-In Refrigerators at Arizona Wholesale

Types, Styles, and Look

In the early days of built-in refrigerators there were very few choices. Sub-Zero gets credit for creating this category in the mid-late fifties. It took a while for the category to grow into what it is today. At one point Sub-Zero was synonymous for built-in refrigerator, and even today they are clearly a market leader. However, many other brands now offer a variety of choices in built-in refrigeration. Here are a few:

Bosch, Dacor, Electrolux, Jenn-Air, KitchenAid, Miele, Monogram, and Thermador

Sub-Zero pioneered the traditional built-in refrigerator which, for our purposes, is a refrigerator with a cabinet depth no more than 24″. Early on the brand offered a choice of stainless steel fronts or models that would accept slide-in cabinet panel fronts to match adjacent cabinetry (overlay models).

Eventually, built-in refrigerators were developed that had hidden hinges and accepted cabinet panel fronts that were flush with adjacent cabinets. These refrigerators were fully-flush “integrated” refrigerators.

INTEGRATED APPLIANCES

Today, column refrigerators with cabinet panels have doors that go from bottom to top (no horizontal panel at the top), and when the doors are closed are truly not discernible from the adacent cabinets.

Configurations of built-ins includes side-by-side refrigerator/freezers, bottom freezer refrigrator/freezers, and separate column refrigerators, freezers, and wine coolers. In addition, some brands offer built-in under counter refrigerators and wine coolers; as well as under counter refrigerator and freezer drawers. The configurations for your kitchen are endless.

Tips for Selecting Appliances

Appliance Help for New Homebuyers

Arizona Wholesale Supply is Arizona's Leading Builder Distributor

Appliance-Package

New homebuyers have to make a lot of choices when selecting all the finishes, and products that go into their dream home. Fortunately, production home builders preselect options and upgrades that are suitable for their homes. Even so, making appliance selections can be very challenging. Here are a few tips in choosing appliances:

  1. Narrow the field. If your builder has a list of models and packages that are available to you, part of your work is already done. Don't waste time looking at brands or models that aren't available for the home you are purchasing. Even If you are building a custom home, there will still be some constraints based on the size of your kitchen, location of gas, water, and electric lines, etc.

  2. Budget and plan accordingly. If it's been a number of years since you purchased major appliances, get prepared for some sticker shock. Today's appliances will save money on energy usage, and still are a very good buy when factoring inflation over the years. However, when you want a built-in refrigerator, combo ovens, and other premium appliances such as wine storage units, built-in warming drawers, steam ovens and coffee makers, you're going well into 5 figures ($XX,XXX.XX).

  3. Consider brands. At Arizona Wholesale Supply, we carry the popular priced major production brands GE, Whirlpool, and Frigidaire (Electrolux). We also are your supplier for upscale brands, such as GE Profile, Electrolux, KitchenAid, and Bosch, as well as a host of luxury brands such as Jenn-Air, Monogram, Viking, SubZero-Wolf, Thermador, Miele and many more. Most production home builders offer selections from only a single brand or two, and even semi-custom builders usually stick with a few preferred brands. For that matter, new home buyers tend to pick most or all their appliances from a single brand that they prefer. It not only narrows choices to products that the buyer is going to be comfortable with, appliance brands tend to have matching handles, knobs, etc.

  4. Work with a professional. Arizona Wholesale Supply consultants have many years experience with home builders, designers, and new home buyers. If your builder or design professional is one of the many that we supply, you can make an appointment at one of our locations to select your appliances.

Arizona Wholesale Supply is a family owned company, based right here in Arizona, and we've been at this for over 70 years.

Fixing The Galley Kitchen

Efficiency and Space in an updated Galley Kitchen

The term galley kitchen goes back to the galleys on ships and carries forward to home kitchens that are built in an aisle with counters, cabinets, and appliances facing each other as in this photo (This Old House).

Galley-Kitchen

Galley kitchens are the antithesis of the open kitchens that are de riguer these days. Galley kitchens are closed off, and can be cramped and crowded to work in. If you have a galley kitchen, and want a more open kitchen, you should work with a designer to explore your options. Occasionally, a wall can be opened to create addition space, or a window might be added to give a more open look and feel.

However, while opening things up in your galley kitchen creates a more open feel, it often doesn't create additional space. If you need additional cabinets, more counter space, or freedom from bumping into appliances that stick-out into the room here are 3 ideas from the appliance guru that might help.

1. Counter depth or built-in appliances

Most appliance manufacturers now offer counter-depth refrigerators that will not push out into your kitchen aisle, and some brands have built-in refrigerators, that will be flush with your cabinet faces. However, it's not unusual for freestanding ranges to stick out a bit into the kitchen, and some pro ranges will stick out more than just a bit, so take care when choosing a range. Since galley kitchens usually have opposing workspaces, it's important that refrigerator, range and dishwasher doors have enough clearance to fully open,

While some dishwashers have fronts that can stick out a bit from the cabinet front, others can be installed flush. Always be careful about installing dishwashers in a corner. If the dishwasher has a protruding handle, it may prevent an adjacent corner door or drawer from opening.

2. Narrow width appliances.

With influence from Europe, there has been a revival of smaller width appliances. Luxury brands such as Wolf and Miele offer 24″ wide ovens along with their standard width American-sized models. Similarly, there are also more choices in 24-inch wide freestanding and slide-in ranges. All of these options create more space in cramped galley kitchens.

3. More accessible appliances.

There are a host of new appliances now on the market that are designed to provide greater accessibility. For example, nearly all major brands now offer microwave drawers, ideally installed under countertops. Great for accessibility, this product also frees up space on countertops or upper cabinets.

Microwave-Drawer

In the last couple of years Sub Zero has introduced a wide array of undercounter refrigerator and freezer drawers in different sizes and configuration. They also have an amazing selection of wine storage units, traditional undercounter refrigerators, and beverage centers. Much of the industry has followed their lead and similar undercounter units are widely available in different configurations, brands, and price points.

Appliances that match your cabinets

Integrated Appliances at Arizona Wholesale Supply

What are Integrated Appliances?

Sub Zero Pro Grand

When speaking about appliances at design community events, I always make a point to distinguish between appliances that are meant to stand out versus appliances that are designed to fit in. Sub-Zero’s Pro Grand Refrigerator above is a perfect example of an appliance designed to stand out. Customers proudly show this giant refrigerator as a centerpiece in their kitchen. At the other end of the spectrum are fully-integrated appliances such as the refrigerator/freezer below.

fully integrated refrigerator
Fully integrated refrigerator 2

I took these two photos at the recent Kitchen and Bath International Show (KBIS 2015) in Las Vegas. In the first photo, you cannot tell that this is a refrigerator. In the integrated refrigerator category, there are significant differences among what is considered fully-integrated and partially-integrated.

Fully-Integrated Appliances

If you’ve ever seen a kitchen such as in the photo above, where appliances such as refrigerator, dishwasher, icemaker, etc. were fitted with cabinet panels and installed so that they could not be distinguished from the surrounding cabinets, they are fully-integrated appliances.

There would be no hinges, no toe-kick, nor any grill showing on the refrigerator exterior. Similarly, there would be no visible toe-kick, nor visible controls on the dishwasher, etc. Of course, all the appliances need to have a narrow depth (24″) so that when installed with a cabinet panel they would be flush with the adjacent cabinet panel. The appliance handles (pulls) would match the cabinet hardware.

Partially-Integrated Appliances

Appliances that do not meet all these strict requirements, yet still have matching cabinet faces are partially-integrated. A refrigerator’s hinges might show; perhaps even a grill to allow air movement. Dishwasher controls, or toe plates might be visible. Of course, there are even some standard refrigerators that are built to accommodate cabinet panels, such as the KitchenAid counter-depth refrigerator below.

partially integrated refrigerator

As you can see, there are considerable variations from a pure fully-integrated built-in appliance to a standard full-depth appliance. To make sure that you get the exact appliance you need for your new kitchen, consult the professionals at Arizona Wholesale Supply. It’s always important to coordinate with designers, contractors, etc. when doing a new kitchen, but it’s especially important if your planning to have fully-integrated appliances.

Choose Your Appliance Style at Arizona Wholesale Supply

Appliance Styles Determine Kitchen Look

What's your kitchen style? According to a recent survey by the NKBA (National Kitchen and Bath Association), designers are moving away from traditional and contemporary styles, and favoring transitional designs. Regardless of choices for cabinets, countertops, flooring, and lighting, appliance choices will definitely have an influence on the overall outcome of the kitchen. Here are a few appliance styles to consider.

Professional Style

Viking-Range

Viking-Range

The professional or restaurant style characterized by big knobs, bulky towel bar handles, and stainless steel finishes remains a strong front runner in luxury appliances. As a category, Viking Range really pioneered this look throughout the 90's, though Jenn-Air has the trademark on the name Pro-Style™.

European Style

Miele

Miele Appliances

Streamlined appliances with a flush minimalist look are credited to the European brands such as Miele and Gaggenau. They're designed to look good in flat front European cabinets with sleek, shiny fronts.

Integrated

Sub Zero Integrated

Sub Zero Integrated

Fully integrated appliances are made to fit within the confines of surrounding cabinets with no toe kicks or air vents so that the appliances cannot be distinguished from the surrounding cabinets. Though the European brands deserve some credit for the flush look, Sub-Zero gets a lot of credit in this area with their 700 series, and now their new line includes many integrated models including a wide array of column refrigerators.

Retro-Style

Heartland Retro Range

Heartland Range

Some people want a kitchen just like Grandma had. A number of brands have sought to take advantage of the desire for retro appliances. Aga Marvel has a specialty brand, Heartland, that offers the most extensive line of retro appliances in the industry. Aga itself, a British name, continues to make its cooker in a farmhouse or cottage style dating back perhaps to Great-Grandma.

Remodeling Never Ends at Arizona Wholesale

New Appliances are Just the Beginning

Floor Covering, Window Treatments, Closet Systems, and More

Arizona Wholesale Supply is always updating.

With all the appliance manufacturers we represent it seems that there is always a new line of cooktops, ovens, refrigerators, or dishwashers being launched. That means tearing down one display or vignette of appliances to make room for another. On top of that, in addition to displaying the latest in Whirlpool, Electrolux, KitchenAid, Sub Zero, Viking, Jenn-Air, Thermador, Bosch, Maytag, Miele appliances and more, there are new brands hitting the market all the time.

AWS Brands

In addition to all these kitchen appliance brands, there are also many appliance related products that need to be displayed such as water softeners, RO systems, outdoor grills, pizza ovens, and others.

Of course, appliances are only one side of the business at Arizona Wholesale Supply. For many years Arizona Wholesale Supply Company has been a leading supplier of flooring products to home builders and contractors. And if there every was a dynamic business – it's floor covering. We've come a long way since the days of wall-to-wall carpet throughout the house. Buyers now must select from traditional tile and carpet to cork, bamboo, porcelain, engineered wood floors, and more. Brands include Armstrong, Mohawk, Dal-Tile, Mannington, Aladdin, Tuftex, Shaw, and others. So that means more samples in an ever increasing variety of colors and styles, and bigger showroom displays.

Flooring Showroom

Arizona Wholesale Supply Showroom

Now, Arizona Wholesale Supply also shows a variety of backsplashes, window treatments, shutters, and built-in closet organizers. In some cases, home builders have contracted to have Arizona Wholesale serve as a one stop selection center for homebuyers so that they can also pick their cabinet finishes, lighting, countertops, etc.

All of this means that some part of any one of the beautiful showrooms of Arizona Wholesale Supply (AWS) is likely to be under construction on any given day. At AWS, we carefully plan the projects to get in and out quickly, and with a minimum amount of disruption. Nevertheless, updating showrooms continues to be an ongoing process.

SO….excuse our dust as we work to create a beautiful environment for you to select the right products for YOUR new building project.
