Ice Machines

Variations among Ice Making appliances

Choose between Clear Ice Cubes or Conventional Frozen Cubes

Do you have a bar area or entertaining center where you'd like to have a supply of ice? There are several choices of ice making appliances that might fit your needs. You could add an under counter refrigerator/ice maker like this U-Line model.

U-Line-Refer-IceMaker

It makes ice, much like the ice maker in your full sized refrigerator/freezer. If you have separate storage for your beverages you could choose just an ice maker like the model below. In either case, you'll need a water line to make the ice, and ideally a nearby sink for cleanup of dropped ice cubes, or ice cubes that are stuck together, etc.

You may prefer a clear ice machine such as this KitchenAid model. Clear ice cubes are made in a special way so that all impurities are removed and the resulting cubes are not only purified; they are completely clear, and odorless.

Incoming water is sprayed upward against a cold metal surface. As the water continues to be sprayed upward the water molecules begin to freeze and adhere to the metal surface. Impurities in the water do not freeze, leaving the frozen pure, clear, ice. In some ice machines the ice machine cuts this block of ice into cubes, and in others the metal form itself actually shapes the cubes:

The water impurities from ice machines is a residue that to some extent can be filtered as the water flows through the ice machine. Unfortunately, some of the residue builds up in the working parts of the ice machine, requiring regular cleaning every few months. In addition, the clear ice machines do need to have a drain. Something to consider in the planning stage.

A variation of the ice machines above is an ice machine from Scotsman that produces soft chewable ice nuggets.

While not clear, a similar process is used to create this ice which is also tasteless, odorless, and a fun way to please the family with chewable flavored drinks.

How clear ice machines work

Part 2

Ice Cubes

Manually, ice is made by filling ice trays with water and placing them in the freezer compartment. With automatic refrigerator ice makers, we automate the process used to make ice manually. Instead of filling trays, water is piped into a tray in the freezer and the zero degree temperature freezes the water. The cubes are then dumped into an ice bucket.

However, with clear ice machines the ice making process* is substantially different. Water is sprayed onto a cold plate that is kept at 32 degrees Farenheit. Since water freezes at 32 degrees, the water freezes against the cold plate while chemicals and other contaminants fall off, leaving nothing but the clear cubes which are then dropped into the ice bin. The machine continues making ice until the bin is full.

The clear cubes consisting of healthy, pure water are always ready for use, and they never stick together or require breaking apart. That's because the ice bin is not a freezer compartment. The ice cubes are continuously melting and being replaced with new ice cubes. The resulting water is continuously sent out the drain. Depending on the brand and feature set that you select, some ice machines will also produce crushed ice, ice that is chewable, and even colored ice.

Crushed-Ice

Just as your refrigerator ice maker, clear ice machines have filters that regularly need replacing. In addition, they need to be cleaned every 6 months (varies with make and model).

This is Part 2 of our blog series on clear ice machines. Click below for Part 1.

*There are variations on this, but the end result is the same – the water is frozen in a clear condition without contaminants or air to make it cloudy.

Clear Ice Machines

Ice Makers that make crystal clear ice cubes

Wouldn't you love to have an ice maker that produced clear ice cubes just perfect for your drinks? You and your guests would be delighted. I know that I would love to be able to serve drinks with something other than those cloudy crescent-shaped ice cubes that spew out of the ice maker in my refrigerator.

Clear Ice Machine

You may need a clear ice machine. Scotsman, U-line, Whirlpool, and others manufacture stand-alone ice makers that provide a constant supply of perfectly sized crystal clear ice cubes. In addition to the obvious benefits above, these ice-cubes won't freeze and stick together. They're free from the chemicals and minerals that come from your water supply, and the icemakers are available in a variety of sizes and capacities. This is not an appliance you should just pick-up at the home improvement chain. There are many factors to consider and some planning to do before making a selection. You won't regret dealing with professionals such as the trained staff at Arizona Wholesale Supply.

Here are just a few considerations that you need to be aware of before rushing out to buy one of these.

  1. Clear ice machines are expensive. Major name brand clear ice machines start at around two thousand dollars, and premium models can be much higher.
  2. They require maintenance. In most cases they need to be cleaned at least every 6 months.
  3. In addition to a water line, clear ice makers also require a drain. Depending on the location, a pump may also be required to pump water to the drain.

There is much more to learn about ice makers, but this will get you started. Check this blog often. We'll be offering more detailed information on choosing ice machines in the coming days.
