Laundry Room Remodeling

Laundry Room Advice from Houzz

New Washers and Dryers from Arizona Wholesale

Modern laundry rooms are no longer after thoughts. Today's laundry rooms are designe for both function and aesthetics. Not just an anteroom from the garage to the living space, modern laundry rooms are workspaces for getting clothes clean and sometimes much more. Here are 5 questions posed by Mitchell Parker in his Houzz article:

Homeowner's Workbook: How to Remodel the Laundry Room

  1. What are you hoping to achieve?
  2. How do you want the space to function?
  3. How do you do your laundry?
  4. What kind of appliances do you want?
  5. Special features?

Of course, we're focusing here on #4 – The Washer and Dryer. Choices include:

Front-Load-Pair

Electrolux Front Load Pair

  1. Front load washers and matching dryers. Full-sized front load washers were launched in the mid-nineties by Maytag and Whirlpool and over the years have become very popular even though they are a pricey alternative to the traditional top loaders of the past. These units may have optional pedestal bases, and may even be configured so that the dryer is stacked on top of the washer.
  2. High efficiency Top Load washers and matching dryers. HE top loaders are for customers who want to load and unload their wash loads from the top, but also want the efficiency and water conservation of the tumble action front load machines.
  3. Traditional Top Load washers and matching dryers. Traditional top load washers have the high-post agitator in the center. While “old school”, some consumers still prefer them, and newer models are available with energy saving features.
  4. Combination washer and dryer. Combination units can be a single front load washer that can also double as a dryer, or a washer with a connected dryer on top configured and sold as a single unit.

Buying Appliances to Save Energy

Making Sense out of Energy Savings Appliances

Question. Can I justify buying new appliances based on energy savings alone?

Answer. Maybe. If your current appliances are old energy hogs, you may be able to justify replacement for energy savings alone because the savings will pay for the replacement. This applies more to washers, dishwashers, and refrigerators than it does to ranges, ovens, cooktops, and dryers.

Here are three specific recommendations:

  1. Topload agitator-type washing machines are real culprits. In general, the older they are the more water they use, and the more water they use, the higher the energy costs, because of the cost to heat the water.

  2. Here's a quick way to find out if your dishwasher is an energy hog. If you have a porcelain tub dishwasher which has no filterbasket, it's very likely a big energy user. Energy saving dishwashers are likely to have stainless or polystyrene tubs and often use a wash system with a filter basket vs. a built-in food chopper.

  3. Does your refrigerator make a loud clunking sound when the compressor turns on? That's a good clue that this has a traditional compressor that runs a long time at high speed to provide cooling and then shuts down for a long period. Most refrigerators today have smaller more efficient compressors that do not cycle on and off but slow down and speed up based on cooling demand.

Another test you might use is age. If an appliance is over 15 years old, consider it suspect. If the appliance is working well, not service prone, and you just love it, then keep it. But, when you have the next service call on old Bessie, it's time to say goodby. The combined cost of repair and potential energy savings of a new appliance make a compelling case for replacement.

There are other reasons to replace appliances such as a kitchen remodel or a move into a new house, but use the above recommendations to think through your appliance replacement needs. Of course, consult your builder or designer, and count on the professionals at Arizona Wholesale Supply for all your appliance needs and more.

Beware Black Friday Appliance Specials

Black Friday Again?

Yes, we know that the Official Black Friday isn’t until the day after Thanksgiving. But rest assured there are going to be a few anxious retailers that jump the gun. After all, Costco has had their Christmas stuff out since September.

Just as a reminder, the term Black Friday was created to denote the day of the year that many retailers went from being unprofitable i.e. “in the red” to being profitable, or “in the black” for the year. Typically, this was the day after Thanksgiving, hence Black Friday.

Of course, this means nothing to marketers, other than an opportunity to beat the competition. In the last couple of years, we’ve seen some big chains open on Thanksgiving to give customers a chance to shop on a full stomach. This year, there are predictions out there that we’ll see some unintentional intentional Black Friday ads leaked online very soon.

Black-Friday-Prediction

In the end, does it really matter? The Wall Street Journal hired a research firm to find out how great the savings really were by shopping on Black Friday. The results are in. Here is their headline:

The Myth of the Black Friday Deal

It turns out that gifts from Barbie dolls to watches to blenders are often priced below Black Friday levels at various times throughout the year, even during the holiday season, and their prices follow different trajectories as the remaining shopping days tick down.

Appliances are no exception, and the bad news keeps getting worse. Appliances are in the category of consumer durables. They have a relatively long lifespan. So you’re going to stay up late on Thanksgiving night to buy a new washer and dryer from the big box store because it is a “door buster”? Chances are you’re going to be disappointed for ten years or more!

We’ve been regularly debunking the Black Friday hoax here each year. The excerpt below is from last year’s Black Friday blog, and it still holds true:

Big Box store (think Orange Aprons) customer comments on Black Friday washer and dryer models:

“Every time I start a load of laundry I must stay close to it to make sure it continues the cycle because it often “hangs” on the wash cycle and sits forever…. I hate this machine with the passion of 1000 white hot suns. I would go on, but it is laundry day and I have to go back downstairs to babysit the washer.”

Here’s what Consumer Reports had to say about the old agitator style washer that the big box store promoted for Black Friday:

These perform least impressively as a group and use the most energy overall. They hold only about 12 to 16 pounds of laundry and use the most water. Most are relatively noisy, and their loads can become unbalanced.

Our suggestion if you need a washer and dryer is to check with the experts at Arizona Wholesale Supply. You might want to start by looking at the specials page on their website:

New Home Builder Appliance Options and Upgrades

New Home Buyer Appliance Options and Upgrades

Logical Steps to Better Appliances

Buying a new home? Get ready to make a lot of decisions. Whether it's a corner lot, stainless steel appliances or taller cabinets; home buyers are faced with a seemingly endless array of choices and charges. Yet, at the same time, options can seem limited as home buyers find that the builder cannot always handle unique requests.

Consider a new home buyer's basic appliance choices.

1. Builder standard appliance package:

  • Self-cleaning freestanding range
  • Microwave-hood combination
  • Dishwasher

2. Builder upgrade to stainless steel appliances.

Stainless Appliance Packge

Stainless Appliance Package

3. Builder second upgrade to deluxe appliances:

  • Smoothtop self-clean range with convection
  • Deluxe super quiet dishwasher
  • Microwave hood with added features

It's a simple good, better, best upgrade choice with the option to also add:

  • Refrigerator
  • Washing machine and matching dryer.

And all this can be included on your mortgage. However, suppose you want appliances that the builder doesn't offer. Perhaps you want built-in instead of freestanding appliances. You may find the builder just cannot accommodate such requests. Such changes would require that the kitchen be reconfigured. Cabinets, countertops, plumbing, and electrical changes would need to be made.

Builders predetermine all the materials and selection choices for the home, creating a standardized repeatable production process (even for options) so that homes can be completed on budget and on time. They really do want to offer choices that will make new home buyers happy. The option and upgrade selection process is designed to do just that.

As Arizona's leading appliance distributor Arizona Wholesale Supply consults with home builders to help them select the most desirable and popular appliance choices for their appliance standards and option upgrade packages. Then Arizona Wholesale Supply design consultants help home buyers through the process of choosing from the various builder options and upgrades. At Arizona Wholesale Supply the objective is to have both a happy home buyer AND a happy home builder.

Appliance Care When You Move

Selling your Home? Make Your Appliances Ready for the Buyer

Tips from Arizona Wholesale Supply

When selling a home, built-in appliances such as the range and dishwasher convey with the house since they're attached. However, the washer and dryer and freestanding refrigerator do not go with the deal unless they are specifically written into the agreement. These days though, it is very common for the buyer to request the refrigerator, washer, and dryer as part of the sale.

If you are selling your home, here are a few things you should do to make you appliances “buyer ready”.

1. Gather up your instruction manuals and, warranty cards, and put them in a binder for the buyer or leave them in a kitchen drawer.

2. Check for accessories and parts that go with the appliances and make sure that you leave them behind for the buyer. These include:

    • Oven temperature probe
    • All included oven racks
    • Broiler pan. Some manufacturers no longer include broiler pans with their ovens. If this was the case, and you purchased your broiler pan separately, you should take it with you because you may need it in your new home.
    • Refrigerator water filter plug. If your refrigerator has a water filter, there should be a plug that replaces the filter if no water filtration is desired. Leave this with the refrigerator.
    • Microwave oven racks and any included microwave cooking vessels.
    • Dryer rack.

3. Clean the dryer filter AND the dryer duct. Dryer ducts can fill up with lint and are a leading cause of home fires.

4. Clean the oven. This is often neglected. Check our videos below for tips on cleaning your oven.

5. If the buyer is not moving in immediately, leave an open box of baking soda in the refrigerator, and pour a half cup of white vinegar in the dishwasher sump.

The Silliness of Black Friday Appliance Deals

Unbelievable Washer/Dryer Prices = Unbelievably Bad Deals.

Black Friday sales are tempting.

But consider that the market for home laundry is a “saturated” market. Over 90% of U.S. households already have a washing machine. New washers and dryers are rarely purchased when the old ones are still working. It's just silly when folks with working appliances rush out to buy Black Friday specials at seemingly ridiculously low DOOR BUSTER prices. (There really is no free lunch).

When is a great price a bad deal?

Nobody wants to pay too much for a new appliance. But buying unneeded washers that must constantly be monitored for out of balance, and dryers without an end of cycle signal at almost any price is paying too much! (Read comments below).

It makes much more sense to keep your wallet in your pocket and buy your appliances as a “considered” or planned purchase. THEN you are buying appliances on your schedule, not someone else's. There will always be opportunities to save money, but you should save money on appliances when you need them, and get products that will make ownership a pleasure – not a burden.

Customer comments on Black Friday washer and dryer models:

“This is not a washer you can start and walk away from to do other things. Every time I start a load of laundry I must stay close to it to make sure it continues the cycle because it often “hangs” on the wash cycle and sits forever…. I hate this machine with the passion of 1000 white hot suns. I would go on, but it is laundry day and I have to go back downstairs to babysit the washer.”

“I can see now why the price is pretty cheap and the dryer is non-returnable. I bought this junk three weeks ago and have used it about a dozen times. I have used both automatic and timed drying. I have to run two 60 minute cycles to dry any type of load I put in. I would not recommend this to anyone.”

Just so you know that we're not referring to hypotheticals here, a major home improvement chain (think orange aprons), has a stupid low price on the old style agitator type washer above. It has a mediocre brand name, and a small tub, but it uses more energy and water than most other washers…I could go on. Here's what a leading consumer magazine (OK – Consumer Reports) says about this type of washer:

These perform least impressively as a group and use the most energy overall. They hold only about 12 to 16 pounds of laundry and use the most water. Most are relatively noisy, and their loads can become unbalanced.

When it comes time for you to buy a new washer and/or dryer check with the professionals at Arizona Wholesale Supply. They can help you select a product that suits YOUR needs. They'll check for any rebates or specials that can save you money. It you're not too picky you could also check with Arizona Wholesale's liquidation center for model home returns or scratch and dents.

Happy Holidays!
