The PCBC returns to San Francisco.

Appliance Manufacturers turn out to support the PCBC

On this past Weds. and Thurs. (June 27 and 28), San Francisco hosted the Pacific Coast Builder Conference. The PCBC is the largest builder trade show in the Western US. For most of the last decade, this event has switched back and forth between San Diego and San Francisco. Now, it has been announced that San Francisco’s Moscone Center will be the home for the PCBC for the foreseeable future.

It’s a welcome return. Though one of the halls of San Francisco’s Moscone Center is undergoing a facelift from the outside, the inside hall has already undergone a welcome change. There is a large open seating and refreshment area directly in front of the exhibit hall allowing attendees and exhibitors to have breaks and mingle. It’s a huge improvement from the last time I was in San Francisco for the PCBC several years ago.

Here’s a list of the PCBC major appliance exhibitors arranged by the size of their exhibits:

Samsung – 2000 square feet

Dacor – 2000 square feet

GE/Haier – 2000 square feet

Electrolux – 1200 square feet

Whirlpool – 1200 square feet

LG/Signature – 1000 square feet

Gaggenau/Thermador/Bosch – 400 square feet

Viking – Not Participating

It was certainly evident that Samsung and Dacor (Samsung recently purchased Dacor) were out to make an impression with two of the three largest exhibits…and they did!

We can probably read a few things into the above exhibit size and presence at the PCBC, but shouldn’t overdo it. For example, in past years Sub Zero did not usually display at the PCBC, but might have function at a nearby hotel. On the other hand, Viking was a luxury brand exception by participating in past PCBC’s. However, Viking is now noticeable by their absence. I don’t know if we should read too much in either of these anomalies. In the case of Sub Zero, they may simply be attending PCBC because of their new Cove dishwasher launch. And since Viking has started participating in a big way in the national IBS, they may feel the PCBC is unnecessary.

It’s worth noting that GE had a superb wide open booth that was welcoming, and very builder friendly, with appliances arrayed in suites. The focus on kitchen suites is something production home builders appreciate because they only sell appliances to THEIR customers in packages. GE also showed a very nice looking apartment sized appliance package, branded with their parent company’s Haier name.

Whirlpool’s display was small compared to GE, especially for the brands they needed to cram into the space. Unfortunately, it was also very closed off with walls blocking entrance to booth and a maze-like display for their Jenn-Air brand. While I appreciate what they were going for, it made what would have been a crowded booth under any circumstances, even more cramped and uncomfortable. On the positive side, Whirlpool’s Sunset Bronze finish is stunning, and could be a welcome addition for home builders. In addition, Jenn-Air is sure to make some waves with it’s new product launch and cheeky ad campaign. Stay tuned for all the new product info from the 2018 PCBC.

Arizona Wholesale Scottsdale Cook-Off

Outdoor Grilling Event in Scottsdale

Eight Top Brands Cook for our Trade Customers

Before the heat really hits the Valley, Arizona Wholesale hosted their customers to a grilling cook-off. Some of the best grilling brands you can find, showed their stuff on the outdoor patio of Arizona Wholesale's Scottsdale showroom at The Design Center in Scottsdale. Take a look!

Hestan is a luxury grill brand that in just a few years has made a big mark in outdoor grilling. Luxury features include grill lighting that goes on and off when you open and close the hood. By the way, the hood is counterbalanced so that it will stay open in any position. Known also for their Napa Winery and a line of cookware, Hestan offers a broad array of stylish grills. Marty Sanchez, local appliance expert, shows his cooking skills on this built-in Hestan Grill.

One of my favorite grills, Dacor, pulled out all the stops for the Cook-Off by bringing their Dacor Grills on Wheels to the event. They've outfitted a trailer with Dacor Grills that they take to events to cook up some special treats.

Caliber Appliances, another California-based company, has a great variety of outdoor grills including this traditional grill that they used during the cook-off.

and this unique Rockwell Grill.

Going back to traditional grills, Wolf, one of the most famous indoor cooking brands, also has a great lineup of outdoor grills. Here they are at the Arizona Wholesale Cook-Off with one of their most popular models.

Do you like Pizza? How would you like to have your own outdoor Pizza Oven? Here are a couple of examples below:

This pizza oven from WoodStone is built-in to a brick console, and is outfitted with a granite countertop and under-counter refrigerator.

Here's a portable outdoor pizza oven from Lynx. When you sell your house, you'll definitely want to take this with you!

Arizona Wholesale Holiday Party

PLEASE JOIN US

Cool, Refreshing, Healthy 4th of July Recipe

Enjoy the Fourth of July with Your Family

Arizona Wholesale Supply will be closed next Monday, July 4th so that our associates can enjoy the Holiday with their families. Here's a great recipe for your celebration on the Fourth from Chris Scheuer that I came across while browsing our supplier websites.

Chicken-Nicoise-Salad

This recipe caught my eye because, I'd been thinking of grilling vegetables as part of our menu on the 4th. I love grilled vegetables. I keep them crunchy, but get some nice grill marks on them, and they make a really colorful, and flavorful addition to the protein of choice. In this recipe, hamburgers or hot dogs are replaced with chicken for a lighter, healthier approach:

Grilled Chicken Nicoise Salad

Makes 4-6 servings
INGREDIENTS
For the chicken
1 1/2 pounds boneless, skinless chicken breasts
2 tablespoons kosher salt
1 tablespoon sugar
4 cups water

For the dressing
1 cup fresh basil leaves, tightly packed
Finely grated zest from 1 medium lemon
3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
1 medium clove garlic, crushed
2 teaspoons anchovy paste
1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
1 teaspoon sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup extra virgin olive oil

For the salad
1 pound small red potatoes, cut in bite-size pieces
3/4 pound long, thin green beans
3/4 cup Nicoise or Kalamata olives, drained
4 medium Roma tomatoes, halved, each half cut in quarters
4 large hard boiled eggs, peeled and halved
1 large head bib or butter lettuce, leaves separated, washed and spun dry

DIRECTIONS
For the chicken, combine 4 cups cold water, 2 tablespoons kosher salt and 1 tablespoon sugar. Stir until the mixture is clear and all salt and sugar have been dissolved, about 30 seconds. Add the chicken and place in refrigerator for at least 1 hour and up to 4 hours.

While the chicken is brining, make the dressing. Combine basil leaves, lemon zest and juice, garlic, anchovy paste, Dijon mustard, sugar, salt and pepper in the bowl of a blender or food processor. Blend/process till the basil is finely chopped. Slowly add the oil while continuing to blend/process. Stop when all the oil has been incorporated and the dressing is smooth. Transfer to a glass jar or container with a tight fitting lid. Set aside. Dressing can be made up to 24 hours in advance. Shake well before serving.

Place the potatoes in a medium-sized saucepan. Cover with water and add 2 teaspoons kosher salt. Bring to a boil, then reduce to a steady simmer and cook for 8-10 minutes or until potatoes are fork-tender. Drain well and transfer to a bowl. Drizzle lightly with extra virgin olive oil and toss to coat. Season lightly with kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper. Set aside.

Place the beans in a gallon sized plastic zippered bag. Add 1 teaspoon of water and close bag, leaving a small opening for steam to escape. Place bag in microwave and cook on high power for 3 minutes or until beans are crisp and tender. Drain the beans and place in a bowl. Drizzle lightly with extra virgin olive oil and sprinkle lightly with kosher salt. Toss to coat.

Preheat your Gas Grill to a medium-high heat.

Lynx-Grill

At about the same time you start the grill, remove your chicken from refrigerator, drain and pat dry with paper towels. Drizzle the chicken lightly with extra virgin olive oil and sprinkle lightly with kosher salt and generously with black pepper.

Brush and oil the grill grate of your grill. Arrange the chicken on the grates and grill for 3-4 minutes per side or until light golden brown and an instant thermometer registers 160˚F. Remove from the grill and drizzle with a bit more olive oil and tent with foil for 5 minutes. Slice and serve warm or at room temperature.

To serve, line individual plates or a large platter with lettuce leaves. Arrange the chicken, potatoes, green beans, and remaining salad ingredients over the lettuce. Serve with dressing on the side.

If you're in need of a new gas grill, whether built-in or freestanding, Arizona Wholesale Supply has a great selection of premium grills for you to check out. Call one of our three locations today to make an appointment with one of our consultants.

Appliance Exhibitors at IBS/KBIS

Visiting Appliance Manufacturers at IBS/KBIS

Are you heading to this week's (Jan.19-22, 2016) International Builder Show/Kitchen and Bath Show (IBS/KBIS), now known as Design and Construction Week (DCW)? If so, you may want to visit some key appliance vendors. Here's an up-to-date run down:

BSH

For the last few years BSH (Bosch, Thermador, Gaggenau) have had a good sized both in the Central Hall displaying their product lines, and have made some major product launches from there. The booth has been busy and crowded, but to their credit it has also been well-staffed by knowledgable sales associates.

Electrolux

Another manufacturer with quite a large booth, Electrolux, has been located in the North Hall, displaying their Frigidaire, Frigidaire Professional, Electrolux, and Icon product lines. This would be a good place to see and TOUCH their Smudge-Proof Stainless Steel appliances.

GE

General Electric Appliances, soon to be a part of Haier, has a modest, but sufficient booth near the entrance to the Central Hall.

Viking

Viking (Middleby) has had a busy booth in the North Hall, that has been a good place for me to meet up with friends and associates. There always seems to be something going on here. Middleby (Viking's owner) has been acquiring new brands recently. It will be interesting to see if they integrate these new products into the Viking booth.

Dacor

Dacor has been showing their appliances at IBS/KBIS in conjunction with other kitchen brands, eg. cabinets. Las year they had some activities going on off-site at the Las Vegas Mandarin Oriental.

Jenn-Air

Jenn-Air has not been formally displaying at IBS/KBIS for several years, but is a sponsor of the NKBA design competition, and has had product displayed in other exhibits with kitchen cabinets, etc.

Whirlpool

Whirlpool also has not been displaying at IBS/KBIS for several years, though they had a large display at this year's Consumer Electronics Show (CES). ??? However, It does appear that Whirlpool Appliances are featured in a show house built in the parking lot of IBS/KBIS.

Keep your eyes open and check the directories for other brands such as Asko, Bertazzoni, Elica, Miele, Scotsman, and Vent-A-Hood.

For more information on or appointments with these or other vendors at DCW contact your Arizona Wholesale Supply representative.

2016 Kitchen and Bath + Builder Show Jan 19-21

New Products Coming Soon to Builder Show and KBIS 2016

The combined IBS/KBIS (International Builder Show/Kitchen & Bath Industry Show) dubbed DCW (Design & Construction Week) enters its 3rd year in 2016 in Las Vegas from January 19th through January 21st. Joining the 2016 DCW event in Las Vegas are the International Window Coverings Expo (IWCE) and the International Surface Event (TISE). It's a HUGE show!

When it comes to appliances, we can expect to see a continued focus on smart appliances, more import cooking brands (think Italy), and some added appliance finishes and colors.

Smart Appliances

We've been given just a few hints that more manufacturers will expand the use of technology to connect appliances to smartphones, home networks, and etc. The big question is convincing consumers to spend more for new features that they may still view as gimmicky.

New Brands

Unlike the U.S. appliance industry which is dominated by a few big brands, Europe has a wealth of brand names. In particular, there appears to be a host of Italian factories making cooking products that have been around for decades, now seeking to export their products to the U.S.

New Colors and Finishes

There has been a renaissance of pastel colors in appliances from the 50's and 60's. Buyers are showing an increased willingness to add these striking, colorful appliances in retro designs to their kitchens. Expect to see bold colors in more brands, and a continued interest in “old style” appliances. In addition, you owe it to yourself to take a look at the new black stainless steel. Photos don't really help. It's stainless steel with the stainless grain or “brush”, and it's black not shiny silver.

If you're not attending DCW this year, the event is moving to Orlando for 2017 and 2018 and returning to Las Vegas in 2019.

Fall Colors Include Pink

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month

Cook for the Cure with KitchenAid

During the month of October, we think of fall colors such as Orange and Brown. But I've been noticing a lot of pink lately. Even those hulks who play professional football are unabashedly wearing pink. It's Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

One of our favorite brands, KitchenAid, has a 14-year long partnership with the Susan G. Komen foundation to fight breast cancer. KitchenAid has raised over $10 million with it's Cook for the Cure campaign. Here are a few suggestions from the folks at Kitchenaid and Susan G. Komen foundation for cooks and foodies to join the fight against Breast Cancer.

Kitchenaid has launched a social media-based program called 10,000 Cupcakes, One Great Cause. Whip up a batch of cupcakes, post a cupcake picture on Twitter or Instagram using the hashtags #10000cupcakes and #donate. For each post during October, KitchenAid will donate $1 up to $10,000 total. Program details are available at:

CookForTheCure

Also, KitchenAid is expanding its Cook for the Cure Collection with new products:

KitchenAid has introduced a ceramic bowl for its five-quart stand mixer featuring a white bowl decorated with light and dark pink polka dots. The bowl features a convenient pouring spout and is dishwasher and microwave safe. In addition, the brand recently unveiled seven- and 11-piece cutlery sets that will be available in Raspberry Ice, a bold and bright shade of pink, for a limited time only. The cutlery sets are constructed with German-manufactured steel that undergoes a precise ice-hardening treatment, which uses a series of heating and cooling patterns to strengthen corrosion resistance and flexibility. The sets will be available through October 31.

Additionally, KitchenAid launched a Cook for the Cure cookbook, filled with more than 110 recipes and culinary inspiration for cooks. The book will be available on Amazon.com.

In 2015, KitchenAid will donate $450,000 or more to Komen through the Cook for the Cure program. Product sales will not affect this donation.

If the ideas listed above don't work for you, you can still do your part. Contact the Susan G Komen foundation by clicking on the link below:

Of course, your source for KitchenAid major appliances is Arizona Wholesale Supply. If you are remodeling your kitchen, KitchenAid is a great choice. Ask your interior design professional. If you are buying a new house, ask your builder to upgrade you to KitchenAid.

PCBC 2015

What is the PCBC?

PCBC

Launched in 1959 as a small educational conference at the Sheraton Palace Hotel in San Francisco, PCBC is now an annual two-day conference, product display and business exchange and is open to anyone professionally involved in the building industry, including builders, developers, architects, remodelers, designers, contractors, dealers/distributors and suppliers/manufacturers.

Keynote-Speech

In the past, PCBC was an acronym for “Pacific Coast Builders Conference”. Over time the name became an inaccurate reflection of the audience, as the show now draws attendees from all over the United States, Canada, Mexico and more than 25 other countries. Today the show is known simply as PCBC.

PCBC alternates each year between San Francisco and San Diego and has been endorsed as the official show of Leading Builders of America (LBA), whose membership includes 21 of the largest publicly and privately held homebuilders in the nation.

This year the PCBC is being held in San Diego on June 24th and June 25th. Many builders and designers from Arizona attend the PCBC, and many manufacturers of products distributed by Arizona Wholesale Supply will be exhibiting at the PCBC.

PCBC-Exhibit-Floor

PCBC Exhibit Floor

Among the exhibiters at PCBC, two exhibit prize winners winners came from the appliance category:

Viking Range, LLC: Viking Professional TurboChef Oven
Whirlpool Corporation: Whirlpool® HybridCareTM Heat Pump Dryer

Some of the manufacturers supplying Arizona Wholesale Supply that will be exhibiting at this year’s PCBC are:

  • ClosetMaid
  • DalTile
  • Electrolux
  • GE Appliances
  • Shaw Industries
  • Viking Group
  • Whirlpool

We’ll be attending and reporting back on what’s what and who’s who at this year’s PCBC. Look forward to seeing you there! Check back here often for updates on PCBC 2015.
