Smart Connected Appliances in 2018

Arizona Wholesale has the most complete selection of smart connected appliances for Arizona home builders and their customers. All of the major appliance brands used by production builders have appliances that fit the definition of smart connected appliances.

SMART APPLIANCES

It’s important to note that all smart appliances are not necessarily connected but all connected appliances are also smart.

Without getting carried away with complex definitions, smart appliances have automatic operations and some type of programmability, usually through some type of user interface. Connected appliances are smart appliances that can be operated or monitored remotely. An oven that you can program to cook a 3 pound roast to medium rare is an example of a smart appliance feature. Of course, appliance manufacturers are continuing to add more advanced smart features to make their appliances more desirable than competitors.

SMART CONNECTED APPLIANCES

If you can open an app on your phone and set your oven to preheat to 350 degrees and then cook your roast to medium rare, then you have a smart connected appliance.

Today, some connected ovens can communicate with Nest brand thermostats so that Nest will begin to lower the temperature in the kitchen as an advance response to the added heat from the oven. This is just one example of devices communicating with each other with no human involved.

Using devices such as Amazon’s Alexa or Google Assistant, a simple voice command, “Alexa preheat the oven to 350 degrees”, can save you the effort of even reaching for your smart phone. So clearly, there are benefits to having smart connected appliances.

However, suppose you program your oven from your office twenty miles away to preheat to 350 degrees so that you can put a roast in the oven as soon as you get home. To your dismay, you arrive home to a smoke filled kitchen because of the leftover pizza slices that you left in your oven last night.

And it’s not just your actions that should concern you. If you know how to say, “Alexa, preheat the oven to 350 degrees,”  how long will it take before your 3 year old says, “Alexa, preheat the oven to 350 degrees.” Beware of unintended consequences. Just like any new technology, it pays to think things through. Make smart connected appliances work FOR you by thinking through your use case.

Column Refrigerators from Miele, Sub-Zero, and Dacor

We’ve chosen to highlight column refrigerators from three very different brands. European brand, Miele, is well known for their top performing diswhasher, but also has a great story on their column refrigeration. Sub-Zero literally invented the built-in refrigerator category, and with their extensive new refrigerator launch a few years ago, they easily have the most complete line of column refrigerators in the industry. A cooking brand, Dacor, introduced their column refrigerators only a couple of years ago, and they are already enhancing the lineup with a unique interior. Let’s take a quick look at the column refrigerator lineups from these three notable manufacturers.

Miele

Miele’s MasterCool column refrigerators are available in 3 widths 22“, 30”, and 36″. Laden with high end features, reviewers rate Miele high for its lighting, temperature control, and quiet operation. Exclusive to Miele is RemoteVision, a feature which allows Miele to remotely monitor your refrigerator’s performance and notify you if it needs service. As a brand, Miele is known for appliances with a long lifespan, and reliability.

Sub-Zero

Sub-Zero Columns

The name Sub-Zero is a giveaway for the brand that pioneered the built-in refrigerator category. With their massive re-launch of new refrigeration products beginning in 2014 Sub-Zero has the most complete line up of columns in the industry. From all refrigerator, all freezer, or combination units Sub-Zero can seemingly meet anyone’s needs. Widths available are 24“, 30”, and 36″. As you might expect, the Sub-Zero columns are loaded with popular features. Worth noting, is the Sub-Zero 2 year warranty, which is extended to 3 years if the product is installed by a certified installer.

Dacor

While Miele and Sub-Zero don’t lack for high end, custom features, Dacor will not be outdone. Their new column refrigerators are equipped with dual wi-fi enabled cameras that allow the user to examine the refrigerator contents using an app on his or her smartphone.

Choose from a handle or handle-free design, and open the refrigerator with a simple tap. The Dacor interior sports a high tech integrated LED lighting system that automatically adjusts the light to the external environment. Dacor has also introduced an exclusive porcelain model which features porcelain interior panels as well as porcelain crispers.

Column Refrigerators, Freezers, and Wine Storage

While there are no official criteria or definitions for column refrigeration units, we’re going to define them as full-height, *built-in refrigerator, freezer, and wine units.

The main advantages to columns are the flexibility of capacity and location. Depending on the appliance brand, column widths include 18”, 22” (Miele), 24”, 30”, and 36”.  Smaller families might prefer an 18” wide freezer and a 30” refrigerator, while a larger family may want a 24” freezer and a 36” wide refrigerator. The two units may be placed next to each other in a side-by-side configuration below, or they may be used as bookends perhaps with workspace, a dishwasher, and a sink separating them.

In the configuration below, an appliance wall features separate wine storage, freezer, and refrigerator.

Early on, European brands Miele, Gaggenau, and Thermador brands dominated the column refrigeration category. While all are made in the same factory in Turkey, the three brands have different features. Sub Zero, with their massive new refrigeration launch beginning in 2013, quickly became a major factor in column refrigeration. More recently, Bosch (parent of the Gagganau, Thermador brands) has added column refrigeration, as has GE Monogram. Other brands promoting columns are  Marvel, and the commercial oriented refrigerator brand Perlick.

As you might expect, purchasing separate units is likely to cost more than a single refrigerator/freezer unit. Nevertheless, columns are becoming increasingly popular. It appears that to be a member in good standing in the luxury category, brands must offer column refrigeration. Hence, Dacor and Jenn-Air have recently entered the fray with refrigerator columns, and GE Monogram has just announced a 120,000 square foot expansion at its Selma, Tenn. refrigerator plant for new column refrigerators and freezers.

*Frigidaire/Electrolux needs a mention here, because of their “all refrigerator” and “all freezer” configurations. However, they are not true built-ins, but what the industry considers counter depth models. This means that they can not be installed flush with the cabinet fronts.

COMING SOON:  Part 2 of this series on refrigeration focuses on key features of specific column refrigerator brands.

Coffee, Anyone? Best Built-In Coffee Makers

I want a built-in coffee maker. No matter that I don’t know where I’d install it in my kitchen. I want one. Which one should I choose?

Well, I could choose the grandaddy of built-in coffee machines, Miele. It’s a great brand, and their products are legendary. Morever, Miele has been a leader in built-in coffee machines since the beginning. The Miele coffee system has a one touch function, and can store 10 different user profiles. Nobody could say I made a bad choice. However, it’s a bit pricey. A bit pricey? ALL Built-in coffee makers are a bit pricey. At over three thousand dollars, Miele leads the pack. I still love it.

If Miele doesn’t fit your budget, you can get a full-featured quality built-in coffee maker for a little more than half the price of the Miele. Another German company, Bosch, makes a very good feature-packed coffee maker that would make you proud. The Bosch unit has a temperature control, and can be programmed for eight different user preferences. It’s a non-plumbed unit which means that you have to manually fill the tank with water.

In between the Bosch and the Miele coffee maker is the Jenn-Air. Full disclosure, I used to work for Jenn-Air. That said, the Jenn-Air coffee machine is actually manufactured by an Italian company, DeLonghi. It costs more than the Bosch, but is still way less than Miele. It lets you select the strength of your coffee, and even has a hot water dispenser for tea, instant soups, etc. It also grinds your coffee beans to your preference, and can be installed anywhere.

While you’re at it you should probably also consider both Wolf and Thermador.

The truth is I love all of these coffee machines. What should I do? The smart thing is to go to Arizona Wholesale Supply and let the experts there demonstrate these fabulous products, explain the features and benefits, and then choose the product that suits my needs. It’s that easy.

Now, I just need a great cup of coffee to get started.

Choosing a Built-In Refrigerator

Built-In Refrigerators at Arizona Wholesale

Types, Styles, and Look

In the early days of built-in refrigerators there were very few choices. Sub-Zero gets credit for creating this category in the mid-late fifties. It took a while for the category to grow into what it is today. At one point Sub-Zero was synonymous for built-in refrigerator, and even today they are clearly a market leader. However, many other brands now offer a variety of choices in built-in refrigeration. Here are a few:

Bosch, Dacor, Electrolux, Jenn-Air, KitchenAid, Miele, Monogram, and Thermador

Sub-Zero pioneered the traditional built-in refrigerator which, for our purposes, is a refrigerator with a cabinet depth no more than 24″. Early on the brand offered a choice of stainless steel fronts or models that would accept slide-in cabinet panel fronts to match adjacent cabinetry (overlay models).

Eventually, built-in refrigerators were developed that had hidden hinges and accepted cabinet panel fronts that were flush with adjacent cabinets. These refrigerators were fully-flush “integrated” refrigerators.

INTEGRATED APPLIANCES

Today, column refrigerators with cabinet panels have doors that go from bottom to top (no horizontal panel at the top), and when the doors are closed are truly not discernible from the adacent cabinets.

Columns

Configurations of built-ins includes side-by-side refrigerator/freezers, bottom freezer refrigrator/freezers, and separate column refrigerators, freezers, and wine coolers. In addition, some brands offer built-in under counter refrigerators and wine coolers; as well as under counter refrigerator and freezer drawers. The configurations for your kitchen are endless.

Smart Appliances for 2017

Have internet appliances finally arrived?

Smart Refrigerator from Samsung

In 2000 at the CES (Consumer Electronics Show), LG Electronics introduced the first internet-enabled refrigerator. The refrigerator had a color TV screen on the outside along with many hi-tech features, and a price tag around $20K. About the same time Electrolux launched the ScreenFridge. In 2006, Electrolux tried again with a more deluxe version, and in 2007 Whirlpool showed a new CentralPark Connection, a data hub and entertainment center that plugs into the refrigeration. While none of these were successful, appliance manufacturers have not given up, and the new improved versions show a lot of promise, and a much lower price. Here's one model from Samsung that appears to be gaining steam.

New Appliances from Jenn-Air

New Jenn-Air Induction Downdraft Cooktop

New Jenn-Air Cooktop Coming to Arizona Wholesale Supply

The industry's first downdraft induction cooktop will be shipping from Jenn-Air later this year. Equipped with powerful induction elements, and the legendary Jenn-Air center downdraft system, this innovative cooktop builds on Jenn-Air's cooking legacy.

A pioneer in induction cooking, Jenn-Air, had an induction cartridge for its modular downdraft cooktop back in the '80's, and later a hybrid four element glass cooktop with two induction elements and two radiant elements.

Jenn-Air's all new 36″ downdraft induction cooktop offers all the benefits of twenty-first century induction technology combined with the advantages of proximity downdraft ventilation. It's literally two appliances in one.

Jenn-Air-Cooktop

With no overhead vent hood, sight lines are open, smoke and odors are captured at the source, and island installation is straightfoward. For those, who don't have the option of venting an island cooktop through the floor, Jenn-Air offers a duct-free kit as an option. Duct-free downdraft can be a real life saver and open up more possibilities for kitchen design.

Jenn-Air's new induction downdraft cooktop has a powerful center vent rated at 350 CFM, perfect for a vent system that captures smoke and odor at the source before it escapes into the room.

The flexible induction cooking areas on each side are controlled by an electronic touchpad, and have built-in sensors that detect pans and will not operate absent a correctly sized pan. The cooktop can accommodate up to six pans as well as oblong pans, griddles, or Dutch ovens. When selected, a Performance Boost setting will provide a brief (up to 10 minutes) boost of power higher than the maximum setting.

For more information on this Jenn-Air cooktop or other appliances contact your designer or builder, and make an appointment with one of the consultants at Arizona Wholesale Supply today.

Commercial Appliances in Your Home

Purchasing Restaurant or Commercial Appliances for Home Use

Appliances for Restaurants and Institution vs Residential Appliances

Some years ago, I was handling appliance sales to a large homebuilder who was building a big (16 home) model home complex for a huge planned community. They wanted one home to contain a kitchen complete with authentic commercial appliances. They'd done some research and had some brand choices such as a Traulsen commercial refrigerator and a Vulcan restaurant range. These brands are indeed products you might find in restaurants, and large institutions, but they are not built for a home kitchen.

I pushed back, but they insisted so I connected with a restaurant supply company, got the literature, specs, pricing, and then met with the homebuilder. When I presented the refrigerator, I asked if they wanted the compressor located inside or outside the house. I explained that the refrigerator manufacturer offered an external compressor and condenser package to reduce the noise and heat from the refrigerator.

Traulsen-Refrigerator

I informed them that they would need to run a larger than standard gas line to the home for the commercial range, that they'd need to provide some extra insulation in the wall behind, and pointed out that the 34″ deep range would stick out considerably into the kitchen from their 24″ deep cabinets. The parts only warranty that came with these products might not even apply since these appliances were not built for residential use. Needless to say, their plan for “true” commercial appliances was scuttled.

Vulcan Range

The end of the story is that today at Arizona Wholesale Supply you can choose from a variety of residential appliances with commercial or restaurant features, that will fit in your kitchen, come with complete warranties, and will satisfy all your needs for high performance and durability. Some of these brands such as Wolf, Viking, and BlueStar to name a few have authentic commercial heritages.

For help in your remodeling or new build project, work with your designer or builder, and make an appointment with the specialists at Arizona Wholesale Supply for the best advice and selections of appliances and more to outfit your home.
