Get clean dishes from your dishwasher

Dishwasher Usage | Pre-Rinsing Dishes

Should I rinse my dishes before placing them in the dishwasher?

Here is what a local “authority” recently wrote in an article in the Arizona Republic regarding pre-rinsing dishes. “Before loading the machine, rinse dishes thoroughly to remove both large and small food particles.” WRONG.

FACT: “Experts unanimously agree that you should NOT pre-rinse your dishes before loading your dishwasher.”

Here's why:

  1. You're wasting time and energy. Today's dishwashers are very energy efficient. It's likely that if you spend time running water to get it hot, and then rinsing your dishes before placing them in the dishwasher that you will use MORE energy pre-rinsing than in the entire dishwashing cycle. Rather than wasting time and energy pre-rinsing your dishes, spend a little extra time in the loading process to make sure that your dishes are carefully loaded. A senior design engineer for one of the leading dishwasher manufacturers says, “The biggest impediment to washing is due to poor loading.”
  2. Your dishes won't get cleaner. Standard dishwasher washability tests from both AHAM (Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers) and Consumers Union are done with soiled dishes. Obviously, scraping off chicken bones and large chunks of leftover food makes sense. Pre-rinsing does not, as dishwashers are proven to get dishes clean without pre-rinsing.
  3. Pre-rinsing dishes not only does not help get them clean, it can actually make matters worse. The active cleaning agent in dishwashers holds dirt particles in suspension in the water so that they can be flushed away when the dirty water is drained from the dishwasher. Absent any dirt, the detergent itself can wind up adhering to and leaving a film on the dishes. Worse yet, lacking soil to attach itself to, gritty detergent molecules can cause “etching” on glassware resulting in blueish cloudy appearance that permanently damages the glasses.

From Simple to Daring, Try Concrete Staining

The commonly-chosen approach for concrete floors is to find something to cover them with – engineered wood flooring, carpeting with a nice thick pad, or ceramic tile. But with today’s acid-staining options, you may want to take advantage of concrete’s versatility. For less than a cover-up you can create a unique and intriguing floor either inside or outside your home.

Concrete staining allows you to turn your concrete patio from its traditional greyish white to rich terracotta, or maybe you want to take a real design leap with a choice like the one above in your rec room. Acid staining using coloring salts provides an appealing variety of colors and tones with almost no limit to your pattern choices. Skilled artisans can turn your simple floor to something that completely changes the feel of a space.

Cracks and discolorations can be hidden with a layer of thinset concrete, and then the palette is limited only by your imagination. Concrete can be colored to look like stone or tile, or you can create something that is only possible with concrete options. The final finish can shine like this one or stay matte, depending upon your approach and preference.

Check out our website at for some more examples of what you can do with concrete, or schedule a visit at one of our design centers and we can show you some more ideas for turning concrete into sophisticated and appealing flooring for anywhere in your home.

Today’s Appliance Colors and Finishes

Stainless Steel continues to head the list of kitchen appliance colors as it has for some time. Black and White are also considered standards by the big brands in appliances, though the luxury brands don’t seem to favor White, and several of these high priced brands do not offer any appliances in White.

Viking Range Company can build to order appliances across a large color palette.

A few other high end range brands such as La Cornue also offer some interesting and unique color selections.

In addition to having two different styles of Stainless Steel (Euro and Pro) as well as their Floating Black Glass appliances, Jenn-Air has offered an Oiled Bronze finish for several years.

Whirlpool has introduced new black and white appliances dubbed the Ice Collection. They’re gleaming white or black with brushed stainless handles.

We’ll blog separately in a future post on another appliance finish, appliances with cabinet panels. In the meantime, the sales associates at Arizona Wholesale Supply are ready, willing, and able to help you find the just right kitchen appliance colors for you:
