April — The Month For Laughter!

April is the official National Comedy Month and what better way to shake off the cold and dreary winter blues than with a month full of activities and ideas focused on laughter. The holiday was founded in 1976 by author and comedian Larry Wilde, who advocated extensively for how laughter can have therapeutic value, which can improve one’s quality of life.

“Since April is often bleak and grim and taxes are due on the 15th, it can be one of the most stressful times of the year,” says Wilde. ”Besides, it’s the only month that begins with All Fool’s Day – a day which has sanctioned frivolity and pranks ever since the 1500’s.”

So how can you celebrate the month dedicated to laughter and comedy? There are several ways to do so, and not all of them include a comedy club. Start the month off small and get a group of friends and family together for a game night. Play games that foster teamwork and laughter, such as Scattegories or Charades. If you are playing with a more mature crowd break out the Cards Against Humanity and let the fun ensue!

Another night you could bring back some of your favorite classic comedies, be it stand up or movies, and curl up on your couch with some popcorn to revisit old laughs. It might be an old Monty Python movie or it might be your favorite stand up special. You would be surprised how your favorites can go unwatched when life gets busy, but taking time to get reacquainted with them can bring you happiness.

Finally, the most obvious of options for National Comedy Month is to go to a comedy show. There is nothing quite like going with friends and loved ones to a comedy club, sitting back, and enjoying live comedy. If you’ve never been than you truly have never experienced stand up like it should be. What is funny viewed on TV is so much richer and hilarious when you are there in the crowd. If you’ve never been to a live stand up show, this is the perfect month to try it out for the first time!

However you celebrate, try to take some time this month to enjoy happiness and laughter. It will brighten your spring and your life as well.

Does the Medicine Cabinet Have to Go Above the Sink?

Medicine cabinets are useful additions to any bathroom. They let you keep several items you use each day right at hand, as well as give you a place to keep things such as medication out of the reach of small children. The traditional place to put medicine cabinets is above the sink in the bathroom, but sometimes this isn’t the best spot. Maybe you don’t have the space between the studs to recess a cabinet and a surface mount style doesn’t match the room’s design. Or perhaps you want a large mirror there, and the medicine cabinet that would fit would be too small. Whatever the case, if you can’t put the cabinet above the sink, there are other places where it can work just as well.

On an Adjoining Wall

If your vanity cabinet is in an alcove or abuts a wall on one end, consider moving the medicine cabinet to the side. Because there are often no pipes running in the adjoining wall, you can usually recess a cabinet here even if you can’t recess it behind the sink. This lets you have a large mirror above the sink, and still keeps all your items close at hand when you need them. Keep in mind however, that frequently adjoining walls tend to not be very wide, so you may not be able to fit a large cabinet in this space.

Next to the Shower

If you don’t have a wall next to your sink, consider moving the cabinet to another area of the room altogether and install it just outside the shower. This is a particularly good move for decorative surface mount cabinets, because it helps to dress up this area of the room, and gives you some discreet storage in another area where you may need it. When placed there, the medicine cabinet can hold razors, soap, shower gels, or bath beads right where you need them. Placing a mirror in this area is also beneficial because it helps to open up the room and make it feel larger.

If you want a medicine cabinet, but not right above your sink, don’t worry; you can easily move it to another area in the bathroom where it will be put to good use.

Dinner Party at the Last Minute

17620226_SYou’re in a panic. Your husband just called and he’s invited his boss, or your in-laws, or your neighbors over for dinner. It’s 3:00 PM and everyone is expected at 6:00 PM. What are you going to do?

Don’t panic. We’ve got you covered. With these simple tips you can have a sparkling clean house and an elegant, gourmet meal for your guests to enjoy in no time at all.

First, make a quick trip to the grocery store. Look at the selection at the butcher counter. Kebobs, chicken breasts, fresh salmon or flank steak are all good options. Just be sure you have enough propane at home, because you are going to make your husband grill the main course.

Slow roasted tomatoes with garlic and olive oil make a great side dish that is easy and quick. While your husband is grilling away, wrap some asparagus in foil with butter and spices and put it on the grill until they are crisp tender.  Make some jasmine rice in your rice cooker (if you don’t have one, get one for the future) and viola you have dinner.

For a quick appetizer, take proscuitto and wrap it around pieces of melon, or cut the proscuitto into squares and bake at 425 degrees until crispy. Add a small ball of goat cheese and a thin slice of granny smith apple and your guests will swoon.

When it comes to dessert you can easily purchase a fruit tart or cheesecake or you can get pre made cookie dough and some ice cream and make ice cream sandwiches.

Remember while you are out to stop at the liquor store to stock up on chilled white wine, a good pinot noir and some beer.  Make sure you have soda and sparkling water for those who are feeling abstentious.

At home, get your kids to help set the table. Grab a laundry basket for any clutter in and around your house. Hide it in the bathroom behind the shower curtain. Run the vacuum or do a quick mop so your floors are sparkling. Check that your guest bathroom is clean and stocked with towels, toilet paper and hand soap.

Guests like to help, so don’t feel as though the meal has to be ready the minute they walk in the door. Have the appetizer ready and some wine and let everyone socializes while you grill and finish the side dishes.

Get clean dishes from your dishwasher

Dishwasher Usage | Pre-Rinsing Dishes

Should I rinse my dishes before placing them in the dishwasher?

Here is what a local “authority” recently wrote in an article in the Arizona Republic regarding pre-rinsing dishes. “Before loading the machine, rinse dishes thoroughly to remove both large and small food particles.” WRONG.

FACT: “Experts unanimously agree that you should NOT pre-rinse your dishes before loading your dishwasher.”

Here's why:

  1. You're wasting time and energy. Today's dishwashers are very energy efficient. It's likely that if you spend time running water to get it hot, and then rinsing your dishes before placing them in the dishwasher that you will use MORE energy pre-rinsing than in the entire dishwashing cycle. Rather than wasting time and energy pre-rinsing your dishes, spend a little extra time in the loading process to make sure that your dishes are carefully loaded. A senior design engineer for one of the leading dishwasher manufacturers says, “The biggest impediment to washing is due to poor loading.”
  2. Your dishes won't get cleaner. Standard dishwasher washability tests from both AHAM (Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers) and Consumers Union are done with soiled dishes. Obviously, scraping off chicken bones and large chunks of leftover food makes sense. Pre-rinsing does not, as dishwashers are proven to get dishes clean without pre-rinsing.
  3. Pre-rinsing dishes not only does not help get them clean, it can actually make matters worse. The active cleaning agent in dishwashers holds dirt particles in suspension in the water so that they can be flushed away when the dirty water is drained from the dishwasher. Absent any dirt, the detergent itself can wind up adhering to and leaving a film on the dishes. Worse yet, lacking soil to attach itself to, gritty detergent molecules can cause “etching” on glassware resulting in blueish cloudy appearance that permanently damages the glasses.
