Kid Friendly Home Accesories

Children in the home bring joy, laughter and fun.  However, they can also be tough on smaller items throughout the home.  Just because you have children, doesn’t mean that you can’t have interesting accessories around your home. Find out what accents are great for children!

A globe is an attractive accessory and a great learning tool for kids. Teach your child about geography and far off places. They will have a great time examining the globe and imagining trips or adventures. Maps are also attractive as art work when framed. These are also great for starting conversations with kids!

Cute stepping stools are perfect to help children with chores. Find a fun stool that your child can stand on and help wash dishes or do laundry. They can also use it to stand on to help with the dusting. Foot stools are available for all décor styles, so have fun shopping around!

Textured rugs are great for providing a soft area for children to play on the floor. Kids love to be stimulated by tactile objects. Look for a shaggy area rug that your child can lay on while watching a movie or playing with toys. Faux hair rugs offer a unique touch to your room while inviting children to experience the softness.

Tea sets are always a fascination. Real and pretend tea parties are a source of endless hours of fun and entertainment. Set up an accent table with an attractive tea set and let your children have tea parties as often as they like. If they desire a real tea party, set out tasty treats and serve with the tea – complete the setup with milk and sugar. Let them have fun setting the table and arranging the treats themselves.  Don’t forget the chance to practice good table manners!

Game tables are a wonderful addition because they have multiple uses. They can entertain children and double as an accent table. Many game tables are available that can transform from a game table to an accent table. Bumper pool tables are a blast for kids and adults and chess and checkers tables are good for teaching concentration!

Arizona Outdoor Kitchen

Planning an outdoor kitchen? Here are some ideas and strategies for you to consider.

  1. Get help. Outdoor kitchens require just us as much professional planning – probably more – than indoor kitchens. Because you are planning a kitchen space as well as an outdoor space, you may need both a kitchen designer as well as a landscape architect to cover all the bases.

  2. Sort out your objectives. How do you envision the outdoor space? Is this primarily for family entertainment? Is there a pool involved? A firepit? Think about the space available and how you might use it. What will the role of the kitchen be?

  3. Review your options. Did you know that there are major appliances rated for outdoor use in all of the leading appliance categories – cooking, cooling, and cleaning? You won't find this information from the big box home improvement store. Consider making an appointment with professional appliance experts such as those at Arizona Wholesale Supply.

When it comes to reviewing outdoor appliances, it's important to note that UL (Underwriters Laboratories) has different requirements for outdoor use. Safety requires special protection for exposure to the environment. Standard indoor appliances installed outside won't meet code, and may be hazardous.

Notwithstanding safety requirements, it makes sense that manufacturers of appliances for outdoor use would also add “weather-proofing” durability features so that their products can withstand outdoor use.

While everyone recognizes grills as outdoor appliances, few people are aware of the variety of appliances being made today for outdoor use. For example, manufacturers have only recently begun making dishwashers for outdoor kitchens. Think of the convenience of not having to trek inside with all those implements and dishes dripping with barbecue sauce.

Believe it or not, outdoor rated wine coolers are also being produced (with special locks). Outdoor refrigerators have been available for some time and now there are also outdoor ice makers as well to keep your drinks refreshed without having to run inside for more ice.

Other interesting outdoor appliances, include pizza ovens, warming drawers, and patio heaters. Matching stainless steel outdoor bars, cabinets, and shelves can be purchased to complement your appliances.

As far as outdoor cooking is concerned, there are smokers, side burners, rotisseries, and more to accompany a wide variety of grills in all sizes and price ranges. To help sort out all these options and manage the budget, you'll need an appliance professional. Whether you are a builder, remodeler, designer, or consumer visit Arizona Wholesale Supply for the lowest prices, the best selection, and professional assistance in selecting the right outdoor appliances for your outdoor kitchen.

Black Accents in the Kitchen

An all black kitchen with black floors, black cabinets and black counters might be too gothic for the majority of people. Dramatic black can have a place in the kitchen as an accent color. Black appliances such as refrigerators and stoves are one of the most popular color choices behind stainless steel and white appliances.

If you love your white or stainless steel appliances and don’t want to switch, adding black accents in the kitchen can easily be done. A few black accents in a white kitchen can create a graphic contrast. Black accents can work in a number of different color cabinets and floors as well as both stainless steel and white appliances.

This kitchen is a great example of various black accents being used in a transitional style décor. Black tiles pop in the black and white backsplash above the stove. The black tiles tie in with the black accents on the stove.  Black drawer pulls add a black accent onto the drawers of the kitchen island.

The counter stool stands out against the warm wood cabinets and floor with its black color. Black wood stools are a great choice in the kitchen because they will not show the dirt like a white or light wood stool will.

Black accents can add depth to a kitchen’s color palette. A few black accessories or counter top appliances easily create a bit of drama on the counter. Sleek black is a great balance to white or colorful kitchens as well as ones that are predominately wood.

Beach Bedroom

Many of us dream of spending our days by the sea, falling asleep to the sound of crashing waves and waking up to walk along the shore.

You don’t have to live close to the ocean to create a bedroom that feels like the beach is right outside your window. This room would fit well on either coastline or anywhere inland.

The rough wood ceiling and painted planks on the walls create the sense of a summer cottage rather than a standard home. The wood flooring is more finished, but its color meshes with the less polished wood in the room. A wood floor like this is always open to design possibilities.

Blue and white create an ocean feel, and the crisp colors are refreshing and clean. All of the blues seem somewhat faded which fits the picture of a cottage that’s seen lots of use. Everything needs to be washable when sand is coming in all the time. The quilt on the bed looks like it was made for utility rather than style, but it still adds charm and interest because of its handmade quality.

The somewhat outdated shape of the slip-covered chair and simple lines of the rest of the furniture continues the beach cottage theme. Everything is a little mismatched. Cottage furniture is compiled of leftovers and thrift-store pieces and this room demonstrates that in a good way.

There are small touches of red and yellow in the room – red on the bed pillow and yellow as part of the quilt. Once again, the unsophisticated features make the room nicer and more comfortable. The beach cottage look is more about making it feel natural rather than “getting it right.”

To finish, you could add a bowl full of shells and sand or a few pieces of polished sea glass. With just a little work and imagination, you’ve brought the feel of the beach inland.

Translating from Image to Design

For most people, mulberries are only recognized in artificial arrangements, but they are a looked-for treat in the country where they tend to grow wild by every brook and stream. This photo shows one of their unusual characteristics. The berries turn from green to red to almost black as they ripen, and it’s common to see all three colors on one stem.

When you’re decorating your home, an image such as this one can provide a great starting inspiration. You have four colors that work together well to create an inviting palette. Let’s see what we can do to translate this image into a look for your living or family room.

Love the soft brown of the leaves? How about wood flooring that captures those shades? Or if you rather, you could find carpeting in this tone that provides a neutral background without being at all boring.

Now for the furniture: there’s a strong black element here with a touch of blue. This could be the primary tone in an area rug, or maybe the color of a matching sofa and loveseat. Add in an accent chair in that lovely dark red and echo it with a few throw pillows on the other upholstered pieces. For the green, how about adding accessories or maybe even velvet curtains that fit with the texture as well as the color in the photo?

As the final touch, you could have this photo enlarged on canvas and hang it over your fireplace. You know it will work with every element in the room since it was your inspiration in the first place.

Let Your Unique Elements Shine

These pieces are all unique – some because of age, others clearly come from other countries. When it’s time to decorate around pieces such as these, some careful planning will allow your special elements to shine in your home rather than look out of place.

Rather than think that all these pieces need to be in some “odd stuff” corner, use them to set off your more standard furniture and accessories. Take a look at the tall chest and the ceramic horseman. These suit each other well. If you have an entryway, these two pieces would be an interesting introduction to your home. You could add a mirror with a dark frame in a simple design to bring all the pieces together.

The two candlesticks have a strong presence, so look for a place where they are in proportion to the furniture. They also would work well on the floor, or someplace such as a fireplace hearth. You could separate them but put them close enough together that they are still seen as a pair. The lanterns are from a different era but serve the same purpose. Put them in a different room.

To add color and style, look for an area rug to bring additional warmth into your home. An oriental style would work well with many of these pieces. The painting is a lovely heirloom and beautifully framed. It could crown a fireplace or stand out above a sofa. Experiment with the best location.

With a little thought, your unique furniture and accessories, whether inherited from Aunt Martha or picked up on a trip to another country, can add interest and charm to your home. Take advantage of your good fortune to add those special elements.
