Modern Decorating

Why is it that this room is so successful in its design, with so little in it to impress? Modern styles always seem to pull of that effortless grace that to someone unsure of how to achieve the look might feel intimidated into giving up. But this room has a lot of those modern touches in it and serves as a map to decorating modern.

To begin with, the room itself has almost no color. It lets different shades and textures of neutrals to do the talking instead. There is a gray carpet for some softness, an extremely light gray wood flooring with wider panels, breaking tradition. It also employs white flowing curtains and a rock wall that adds another layer of color and texture. Color is very important when your trying to achieve a modern look, it’s just a matter of how you are using color in ways you hadn’t before.

Another important aspect of designing in this style is to juxtapose metals and glass with nature. In this picture, there are minimalist chairs with smooth metal legs. The coffee table repurposed as a side table for the bed has a decidedly alien look to it.  The vases holding plants are clear and clean. All of this in a room dominated by an entire wall of rock that brings us back to nature. The wall is surely the crowning jewel, it is powerful but not overbearing as the owners chose to use a lighter rock to keep things like in a room that could easily be bogged down by too much use of darker materials.

And finally, using minimalist principles will help you achieve a modern look. Notice how there isn’t much frill and instead it lends itself to a more utilitarian approach. This allows all of the small details, such as the vase on the ground next to the chair be appreciated. It keeps clutter out and keeps the modern in.

These are a few tips to help guide you on your road to modernism in your home. Take the time to chose pieces carefully because you won’t have a lot to work with if you want to keep it modern. Good luck!

Shaw Floors at PCBC2015

FLOORTÉ™: Luxury Vinyl Flooring Collection from Shaw

At Shaw, luxury vinyl flooring—which we often call resilient—is our forte. So we’re calling our latest collection Floorte™.

Floorte™ is a vinyl laminate made using high-definition printing to emulate a hardwood or tile surface. Shaw's engineered FOLD N GO™ locking system makes installation easy. Floorté™ floors are not only strong and durable, but their flexible design helps conceal imperfections in the floor beneath. The high-definition printing creates a highly authentic appearance, and the hardwood designs are created to match the top species and colors of hardwood.

“You can get the wood look without the high-maintenance, a product that hides imperfections in subfloors, and an easy click system,” says Natalie Cady, director of hard surface marketing. “The fact that it’s waterproof is just icing on the cake.”

Laminate Coreboard Technology

An Eco-Friendly Alternative

Known for being committed to the environment, Shaw Floors laminate options are an ideal choice for all of us who are environmentally conscious. Shaw laminates have a long life span. Replacement is something you won't even think about for many years to come.

Why Choose Laminate?

Since laminate is made to look like and even feel like hardwood, maybe you're wondering why you shouldn't just buy hardwood? Shaw floors has a great selection of hardwood floors. But, here are some reasons you may want laminate:

  1. As always, price may be a consideration. Laminate can be half the price of hardwoods. And the easier, quicker installation, can save you money, also.

  2. Even though hardwood is a “natural” product, laminate is much more durable than hardwood. It's not nearly as likely to scratch or split. It's much more resist moisture damage, and maintenance is a breeze. There's less wear and tear, and it's very resistant to spills and stains.

  3. Laminate is also versatile. Various wood grains, colors, tints and patterns are limited only by consumer demand.

Tile Trends

2012-09-25 13.57.56Are you working on a new tile project at home? Are you redoing your kitchen tile, backsplash or a bathroom? Do you want to know what is trending in the world of tile? Here are three of the most popular new ideas.

Tile that looks like wood – The wood tile trend has been gaining momentum for several years, and now there are more styles and sizes to choose from than ever. First introduced as a modern take on hardwood, this trend has inspired all sorts of new dimensions for tiles— the most popular being long narrow planks, as well as different colors, patinas and finishes.

Wood tile now ranges in color from dark walnut, driftwood, weather painted planks and petrified wood. Instead of looking for actual 100-year-old barn wood for a shabby chic look, you can use tile instead. Also popular is mixing and matching different styles of wood tile so you get a very unique floor, something that is next to impossible with reclaimed wood.

Linear and Rectangular – Using tile on your walls as well as your floors is also a new trend. Rectangular shapes give you more options in design because they can be a visual contrast to the traditional square tile or mosaic. Think about using linear tile on your walls to bring a height and openness to your space.

Think BIG – larger tiles like 12”x24”, 18”x18” and 20”x20” are all the rage. Larger tiles may seem scary but there are many advantages to using larger tile. Larger tile means less grout, which equals spending less time cleaning dirty grout. Bigger tiles can actually make a smaller room appear bigger because less of the grout grid shows.  With less grout showing more attention is paid to the tile, which should be the focal point anyway.

Something to think about as you plan your new tile design.

Designing your kitchen – focus on flooring

Shaw flooring from Kitchen of the Year 2012

There are many good reasons to choose hardwood flooring from Shaw for your new kitchen. When you choose eco-friendly Epic hardwood it's durable, it's good for the environment, and it's good for your budget too.

Epic uses less harvested wood than other flooring options and comes with EnviroCore, an inner layer made from recycled wood fibers so Epic hardwood offers performance advantages in addition to its environmental benefits. Due to its increased humidity resistance, this engineered hardwood line is suitable for virtually any climate and can be installed at any grade level – even below – where solid hardwoods present problems. The product's core also creates a more dimensionally stable platform, and Shaw's innovative tongue-and-groove system (patent pending) facilitates installation and results in tighter seams. Epic hardwood features also include a shorter acclimation period, elimination of seam gaps, and a highly durable finish that withstands even the toughest wear and tear.

Epic hardwood's inner layer, EnviroCore™, is made from recycled sawmill by-products created in the manufacture of other products, making it one of the most sustainable engineered hardwood flooring products on the market. Shaw hardwood's 3/8″ engineered hardwoods use roughly 50% less newly forested wood in their production than conventional 3/8″ engineered products and less than 1/3 the amount used in comparable solid wood flooring.

Shaw hardwood's veneer is obtained from North American managed forests deemed sustainable by the U.S. Department of Agriculture; suppliers are committed to sound forestry practices. All styles are in compliance with the California Air Resources Board (CARB) requirements. Epic hardwood products also comply with the recently revised Lacey Act, the United States' national wildlife protection statute that has been amended to make it a crime to import illegally logged timber products into the U.S.

Let Your Unique Elements Shine

These pieces are all unique – some because of age, others clearly come from other countries. When it’s time to decorate around pieces such as these, some careful planning will allow your special elements to shine in your home rather than look out of place.

Rather than think that all these pieces need to be in some “odd stuff” corner, use them to set off your more standard furniture and accessories. Take a look at the tall chest and the ceramic horseman. These suit each other well. If you have an entryway, these two pieces would be an interesting introduction to your home. You could add a mirror with a dark frame in a simple design to bring all the pieces together.

The two candlesticks have a strong presence, so look for a place where they are in proportion to the furniture. They also would work well on the floor, or someplace such as a fireplace hearth. You could separate them but put them close enough together that they are still seen as a pair. The lanterns are from a different era but serve the same purpose. Put them in a different room.

To add color and style, look for an area rug to bring additional warmth into your home. An oriental style would work well with many of these pieces. The painting is a lovely heirloom and beautifully framed. It could crown a fireplace or stand out above a sofa. Experiment with the best location.

With a little thought, your unique furniture and accessories, whether inherited from Aunt Martha or picked up on a trip to another country, can add interest and charm to your home. Take advantage of your good fortune to add those special elements.
