Appliance Manufacturers turn out to support the PCBC
On this past Weds. and Thurs. (June 27 and 28), San Francisco hosted the Pacific Coast Builder Conference. The PCBC is the largest builder trade show in the Western US. For most of the last decade, this event has switched back and forth between San Diego and San Francisco. Now, it has been announced that San Francisco’s Moscone Center will be the home for the PCBC for the foreseeable future.
It’s a welcome return. Though one of the halls of San Francisco’s Moscone Center is undergoing a facelift from the outside, the inside hall has already undergone a welcome change. There is a large open seating and refreshment area directly in front of the exhibit hall allowing attendees and exhibitors to have breaks and mingle. It’s a huge improvement from the last time I was in San Francisco for the PCBC several years ago.
Here’s a list of the PCBC major appliance exhibitors arranged by the size of their exhibits:
Samsung – 2000 square feet
Dacor – 2000 square feet
GE/Haier – 2000 square feet
Electrolux – 1200 square feet
Whirlpool – 1200 square feet
LG/Signature – 1000 square feet
Gaggenau/Thermador/Bosch – 400 square feet
Viking – Not Participating
It was certainly evident that Samsung and Dacor (Samsung recently purchased Dacor) were out to make an impression with two of the three largest exhibits…and they did!
We can probably read a few things into the above exhibit size and presence at the PCBC, but shouldn’t overdo it. For example, in past years Sub Zero did not usually display at the PCBC, but might have function at a nearby hotel. On the other hand, Viking was a luxury brand exception by participating in past PCBC’s. However, Viking is now noticeable by their absence. I don’t know if we should read too much in either of these anomalies. In the case of Sub Zero, they may simply be attending PCBC because of their new Cove dishwasher launch. And since Viking has started participating in a big way in the national IBS, they may feel the PCBC is unnecessary.
It’s worth noting that GE had a superb wide open booth that was welcoming, and very builder friendly, with appliances arrayed in suites. The focus on kitchen suites is something production home builders appreciate because they only sell appliances to THEIR customers in packages. GE also showed a very nice looking apartment sized appliance package, branded with their parent company’s Haier name.
Whirlpool’s display was small compared to GE, especially for the brands they needed to cram into the space. Unfortunately, it was also very closed off with walls blocking entrance to booth and a maze-like display for their Jenn-Air brand. While I appreciate what they were going for, it made what would have been a crowded booth under any circumstances, even more cramped and uncomfortable. On the positive side, Whirlpool’s Sunset Bronze finish is stunning, and could be a welcome addition for home builders. In addition, Jenn-Air is sure to make some waves with it’s new product launch and cheeky ad campaign. Stay tuned for all the new product info from the 2018 PCBC.
