What's New at Arizona Wholesale Supply?

SMEG Appliances from Italy

A few years ago Fiat automobiles were relaunched in the U.S. with some very clever TV commercials announcing “The Italians are coming.” Well, they sure are, but their invasion has not been limited to automobiles. Italian appliances have also made their mark in the U.S. over the past few years. Among the latest, is the Italian brand SMEG. It's now available in Arizona at Arizona Wholesale Supply.

I had an advance notice about SMEG. While vacationing in England a few years ago, we were wandering the streets of Bath, and passed an appliance store. In deference to my wife, I resisted the urge to go inside, but I did check out the SMEG refrigerator in the window display. Now, this upscale Italian brand is available in the U.S. As you can see the refrigerator has a distinct retro 50's look, and is available in an array of colors including the pastel blue below. It's a sturdy product, and a particular nice fit in smaller kitchens. Below are some of the listed features:

1940s Kitchen Design

Retro designs can be a fun way to spice up your kitchen, and one of the most popular retro kitchen designs is the 1940s kitchen. These bold, vivid kitchen designs are eye catching and playful, allowing you to have a lot of fun in the design and use of the room.

Colors for 1940s Kitchens

The colors used in the 1940s were very bold, vivid, and often primary. Most kitchens used two colors together, with the two-tone effect running through the whole room from a checkerboard floor to tile countertops that used a differently colored border on the edges to highlight the color of the tiles in the center.

The most popular colors for a 1940s kitchen include:

  • Green – Nearly every shade of dark, bright or bold green works in this space. Green paint had been used only by the military during World War II, so after the war, the color became extremely popular for everything from paint to fashion.
  • Red and white – Bright reds paired with cool whites was a very popular color combination in the 40s.
  • Blues – Following the green trend, Navy and Air Force blue were also very popular.
  • Yellow – Look for bold, bright and cheerful shades of yellow.

1940’s Kitchen Accessories

Add a few fun kitchen accessories to complete your 1940’s kitchen design. Glass or acrylic knobs on your cabinets, colorful kitchen linens in the colors used in the rest of the space, and lots of enamel are all great ways to add a little retro style to the design. Finish it off with textiles on your chairs and windows in cherry prints, gingham, and checks in your favorite colors.

Look for brightly colored chairs and bar stools, chrome and enamel for your 40s kitchen furniture, or consider painting your existing wooden chairs in bright, 40s colors like sunny yellow or Kelly green. You can also replace the legs on your wooden table with chrome to help finalize and finish the effect.

Remember that furniture in the 40s was just the beginning of the diner trend of the 50s and 60s, so don’t be afraid to have some fun with your furniture.

Retro Appliances at K. Hovnanian Homes

New Homes with Old Style Appliances

K. Hovnanian Homes

The Meadows at 97th Ave. and Deer Valley Road

Expect the unexpected. When it comes to appliances, the big builders don't take a lot of chances. For most family new home communities you're likely to see dishwasher, range, over-the-range microwave, and refrigerator from one of the two big brands GE or Whirlpool.

But homebuilder K. Hovnanian stepped out of the appliance box in one of the model homes in their new model complex at The Meadows. They decided to be a little different. Maybe that's an understatement. These retro-look appliances in bright turquoise are WAY different from what we're used to seeing.

The appliances are stunning because of their color and retro design, but more than that they're whimsical and fun. I stood in the model and watched prospective home buyers flow through. The appliances didn't just capture their attention. Their faces lit up with big smiles. And why not. The kitchen look is just plain delightful.

Now, would you really want these appliances in your house? Northstar is the brand. They come from Elmira Stove Works, a Canadian outfit. Famous for their 1890's style woodburning and gas ranges, Northstar is big step forward to the 1950's for Elmira.

However, outside of the retro look, the appliances themselves are in fact very contemporary. The range is self-cleaning, and comes complete with warming drawer, and a digital display which is subtly hidden beneath the analog clock. The French door refrigerator is frost-free. It features an interior water dispenser, and factory-installed icemaker.

Now, if you're still not convinced and worried about the upstart Northstar brand, we'll share a little secret. The design and look is 100% Northstar, but (except for the microwave oven) these appliances are all manufactured in the U.S. by a very well-known appliance company.

To see these appliances in all their stunning glory for yourself, visit the model homes at The Meadows by K. Hovnanian at 97th Ave. and Deer Valley Road, in Peoria. For more information about Northstar Appliances contact the appliance professionals at Arizona Wholesale Supply
